"The amount of sharks moving north from places like Yamba, tweed and surrounding areas at the moment is incredible."
The death of a thirty-nine-year-old man in far north Queensland earlier today, killed while spearfishing, has sparked calls for the state government to close a law that protects all sharks over a metre and a half or five feet, as well as a blanket protection on Great Whites.
An effective ban on giving hell to man-eating sharks.
It’s the second fatal shark attack in Australian waters in as many weeks, after a 38-year-old Perth man off Rottnest Island eight days back.
Anyway, fact of life these days, another fatal shark attack, another family ruined, kids without a dad and so on, and Joel Nancarrow, whom we all know real well now, has got his comments running hot after he slammed the Queensland gov’s metre-and-a-half policy in a series of Facebook posts.
Unfortunately a man has been killed in a shark attack in qld today.
This whole problem started in qld around 15 yrs ago when for what ever reason, their fisheries decided it was a good idea to protect ANY shark over 1.5m in length.
Qld is different to NSW as they get tigers coming into the beaches as well as bulls, yet they still choose to make up silly rules.
This also comes at a time that there is an active petition going around to life the 1.5m laws, if this doesn’t give their department a massive wake up call, I don’t know what will.
That old saying “more chance of being struck by lightning” is really starting to lose its meaning.
And, in an attempt to explain the fatal attack,
Qld shark advise!!!!
I’ve spent the afternoon looking at the reasons behind today’s fatal shark attack!!!!!
I’m not from the area and don’t know enough to put random words of warning out there, I try so hard to make sure that what I say to you guys is nothing but 100 percent experience based knowledge.
I’ve looked into everything and I’m pretty confident that it’s not just a random incident.
The amount of sharks moving north from places like Yamba, Tweed and surrounding areas at the moment is incredible. Unfortunately as I said earlier in the week, NSW and Qld DPI don’t have the data overlapping on their systems, this means once the sharks cross the boarder, they are almost untraceable, (by the public anyway).
These sharks heading to the north would undoubtedly be putting feeding pressure on the sharks that have been in Qld for a period of time, this pressure would make sharks that usually pass up a feed more likely to take opportunities they haven’t needed to take in recent months, this is the reason we often see attacks early and late in the seasons.
(If you’re at a party with 10 people and 10 plates of food, your in no rush. Another 100 people turn up without warning, you’re grabbing that plate aren’t you?)
This all comes back onto the Qld dpi, they protect the big sharks that end up migrating south.
These big sharks ALWAYS, migrate north at the end of the season and turn back up in Qld bigger than they were when they left, they are then protected for another 4 months until they (and the new generation that have matured this season) migrate again the following summer.
So every single season, there will be more and more mature bulls traveling south and returning north.
The longer they are protected up there over 1.5m the longer this is going to happen, it will become much worse though.
You are literally providing a safe haven for a shark that loves inland and coastal waters with the highest testosterone in the whole animal kingdom and letting their numbers expand without any intervention at all every year, humans are a part of the foodchain, protecting these sharks, you are messing with nature in a very dangerous situation.
This is the Qld DPI fault, there’s no denying it at all.
The solution is to open up the restrictions, it won’t be an instant fix and may take 5/10 years to level out, but if it’s not done, in 5/10 years, the water will not be safe to swim in at all.
I’m confident enough after having a good look that this will definitely be the reason and the next month is a danger period there due to the large number of BIG sharks traveling past the beaches up there, I’m sorry I didn’t look into it sooner, I know it’s not my job but I still apologize!!!!!!!
As for all the people that write, “It’s the sharks home”
There are many people on here that have been impacted by these events. How about instead of being tough behind your phone screen, I can organize a family member of a victim for you to say it to in person?
Which side do you fall on, the it’s-the-shark’s-home-don’t-like-it-don’t-go-in-the-ocean or are you are a little more pragmatic, acutely aware of the dead beast between your hamburger bun, say, and think, how about we just peel off a little bit of coastal waters for human use ie. give bigger sharks a little hell until they beat it?
I can fall on either side depending on mood and, or, current level of testosterone.
I’m on the side of spelling the word ‘advice’ correctly.
Spearfishing is much more dangerous than surfing
In honor of memorial day weekend I want to take a quick moment to remember a man mostly missed named Strayan Cunt. Did he talk more than my wife after a few glasses of wine? Yes. Is poor Mindy working over time right now? Yes. Does he think Del Taco and Taco Bell is authentic mexican food? Yes. Are his Seppo jokes played out? Yes. Is he still on the couch, leg up, vicously reading everything on BG while watching Neighbors? Yes. Has he gone through multiple wank socks since getting banned? Yes. Will one day he get redemption on the bamboo? Yes. Now with all that being said. He is missed. Come on Negs. In honor of all the veterans out there this weekend. Free our little BG vet!
Aside, and really aside from the tragety of shark attack victims and the fall-out of the Bondi murders, the agony of a perpetual war on Iran from the IDF, there can be a moment or two where what is out-of-mind becomes a glorius “This is it!”
Browsing BG comments on finals day there were some comment/captions that really blended well and Negs hit it early: “By afternoon the swell will start showing and by the finals the wind will be perfect for throwing cutbacks into the wind . The height of the spray may determine whose riding the best waves, or something. He called it early on.
By bowing out of the BG presentation, and inability to watch&comment at the same time which has never worked for me (and finals are not on youtube ever,) I resorted back to S_Line real time static cam. By god, indeed the outer point was firing. Blue green yellow lefts that boggled the mind racing with rippers tossing insane late bottom turns, and unlike the main break there were few sprays but ultimately insane down-the-line double overhead racers. The entire swell into the bay arranged with the capabilities of the coastline to form them.
The layout became clear: when Rag’s is firing the further outside waves are the place to be: not every wave is perfect and not every wave was ridden. By the longview and now in the contest area, waves were smaller and peeps were ripping.
For a moment the magic of Raglan transformed into an epic visual that left a lasting impression and this AM it still lingered. All kidding aside, for about twenty minutes a stone cold reality of what a awesome place it is. Sure we have the Pipeline left and much hype to watch an entire day of surfing that leaves us exhausted and wanting the same the next day. However, have never watched a brief, albiet, view from a mile away that engrained and will linger for some time. Sure its a world class wave that chose to show itself to those lucky on the beach and the few of us that waste money of a pay-per-view wave watching.
“A forth year of the Raglan Corona Cero contest in on today,” on BGer wrote. Yeah most of the ‘testing was tedious to watch. But every great spot has its days, hours, or even minutes.
I like you’re write up from the Surfline cam perspective but today just type in WSL in the address bar of your computer and hit enter then choose to watch the contest.
If you’re dragging bloody fish around while swimming in known shark waters, there is a decent chance you would attract big predators. Seems reasonable, yes?
The unconstrained proliferation of protected large sharks in Australian waters since 1999 will, unless the rules are changed, make surfing and other forms of ocean recreation a life or death proposition in many areas within the next five years, if not sooner – as in the west coast of South Australia
You may love surfing, but do you want to die doing it?
yessss
Don’t go there? Im sure the locals would appreciate it .

But killing babies in the womb is fine.
Jesus Christ
How crazy is that.
Serious question tho…
If you had to get eaten by a shark, which one would it be?
Definitely not a gate crashing bull shark from NSW. I’ll go down in one bite from a 20 foot female White from WA
A great white over 20 feet in the red triangle, breaking Lewis Boren’s (RIP) record.
Over in one bite, good choice.
DR its your superficial outlook based on testosterone levels that the world needs protecting from. Not sharks.
I think the world is pretty safe from ol Dez.
Hmmm I bet Adolph had similar views about his writing while riling up the fascists (and likely shark haters)
