Surfing and football are having a moment. Just yesterday we learned that the San Francisco 49ers star running back, and last year’s Comeback Player of the Year, Christian McCaffrey is preparing for the upcoming season by training with Laird Hamilton. The King of the Sea’s unorthodox methods have long drawn those looking to unlock heretofore unseen levels of fitness. When I was there, in “The Pool,” Spiderman and Rick Rubin were there too. It has to, then, be assumed that McCaffrey will have his best season yet, thanks to surf-adjacency.
Today, though, surfing is being castigated as “unchill” by a former football luminary. The ex-coach Urban Meyer, who became a star at Ohio State before going to Florida, losing his way, becoming an embarrassment for flirting with babes in bars and getting fired, was very angry after Ohio State’s highly-touted quarterback Julian Sayin sharing his offseason plans.
Speaking on The Triple Option program, Sayin shared that he would be surfing, saying, “The waves haven’t been great so far, but they should be picking up maybe this week, maybe next week. Should be ready to go.”
The five-star recruit grew up in Solana Beach, in North County San Diego, and played his high school ball at Carlsbad High School before heading to Alabama. After the legendary coach Nick Saban retired, following the 2023 season, Sayin transferred to Ohio State, redshirting his 2024 and being named starter, last year and doing extremely well.
Though Ohio State was bumped out in the second round of the college football playoffs, hopes are very high for this upcoming season, leading the aforementioned Meyer to sneer, “If I was (Ohio State’s) head coach, I’d say ‘get your ass out of the water, Julian. You’re not allowed to do that. Just kidding.”
Sayin is correct in saying North County’s waves haven’t been great so far. In fact, they’ve been bad.

At my local this moring we found a board in the shore dump with a snapped leggy. The surf is pretty big ( 8 -10′) so that’s not a surprise. The weird part was finding the velcro cuff floating in the same spot. Couldn’t see anyone swimming in nearby, but could’ve been someone further south on The Stretch.

The whole thing sucks. One of the best parts of college for me at a pac 10 school were the road trips to away games and I don’t like football or basketball that much.

I could have gone to UCLA. Then I saw Blacks for the first time visiting the UCSD campus and committed there instead. Don’t know why this kid didn’t go just there—UCSD football is still undefeated.
I visited Pt Loma and ended up in PV instead. I went back a few years ago and didn’t recognize the place.

The SDSU girls were still a freely available commodity even if you were a UCSD student back then. SDSU, however, was not within walking distance to Blacks.

Julian was the number 1 recruit in the country in 2023. No way was he going to SDSU, UCLA barely counts as a football school anymore, and the QB situation at USC was unpredictable.
He originally committed to Alabama. He gradjuated early went to Alabama and about 2 weeks later Saban retired, so Sayin transferred to OSU a couple weeks after that.
The kid is amazing. My kid played freshman football at Carlsbad Sayin’s senior year, so I saw almost every game. He is without a doubt a potential NFL hall of famer, barring injuries. I saw him throw a dot to his receiver in the back corner of the end zone standing on his own 40. That’s like 70 yards in the air for a high school kid.
I would say I’m surprised that Chas didn’t mention that he was a heisman finalist as a first year starter. Although, I suspect Chas’ badminton knowledge goes much deeper than his football knowledge.

I used to visit Barbados, in my teens and twenties, to see friends and to occasionally surf while I was there. Realistically i should have surfed it a lot more than I actually did, but c’est la vie. We were usually just drinking, partying and chasing girls.

Bro I caught some decent 2-3ish at Doheny two Fridays ago during the quick hour I was there before the after-work crowd showed up. The after surf beers were better than the waves but I’ll take what I can get
thru the memory fog, I surfed in a contest there (my first) in the late 60s. Dad drove me down from MB. I recall the announcement in a surf-themed news letter. As a grom, I recall checking in, getting a jersey and paddling out. thru surfline I checked to see what it looks like now. Guess I caught a wave or two in somewhat crumbling waves. Should have a better memory of the affair, but I don’t. But there was a rush of excitement to enter and no regrets about not advancing. But was unique was the fact that I convinced Dad to switch gears from little league baseball coach to surfing enabler. That act opened the doors to accepting constant surf trips. “Dad, can I borrow $5.00? So and so is driving us to check the surf “down south.” “Dad, I’m taking the train to San Blas and will need more than a few dollars and will be gone for the summer.” One foot in baseball and the other dipping toes in untested, and vaguely identified spots that over time have become legendary.

Great memory! The place is generally nuts and you have your best opportunity to enjoy it if you catch it during off hours when the absolute crazies are not there which is rare.
Our boys free time away from little league and travel sports was spent on beaches surfing or mountain biking. They needed the escape from the craziness of what organized sports brings to the equation. So it really cool to see they both still enjoy surifng well into their 20s and even let us tag along periodically.
What a difference Doheny is today versus before they built the Marina! I don’t know if you ever surfed it before then but it looks like it was truly special before man ruined it.

Computer modelling is not science. It’s the modern equivalent of horoscopes. As I said….how can you trust a climate forecast for 2100AD when the same modelling power can’t say with certainty if we will be in El Niña next year? You can’t.
