"The most incriminating footage we've ever seen!"
Hawaiians, as well as lovers of slick-skinned animals around the world, have reacted poorly to vision of a tourist giving hell to an endangered monk seal, an animal so rare there are only 1,600 left on earth, all the while standing in the middle of a burn zone that killed more than 100 people a little under two years back.
The incident was filmed by a witness on a friend’s family property on Front Street, still deep in Lahaina’s devastated core. The footage shows two tourists standing far closer than the legally mandated 50 feet from the seal, a female known to local conservationists as Lani.
The witness said they warned the man to back off. He didn’t. When Lani retreated into the water, playing with a piece of driftwood, showing no aggression, he threw a large rock in her direction.
NOAA Fisheries dispatched a biologist to assess whether Lani had been injured. The Hawaii Department of Land and Natural Resources and Maui Police also responded.
Hawaiian monk seals are protected under the federal Endangered Species Act and the Marine Mammal Protection Act. Giving hell to the lil cuties can result in civil fines up to $100,000 and time in the can. Every one of the roughly 1,600 animals alive today is individually tracked and named by researchers.
Officials described the footage as the most incriminating they’d ever seen.

That’s the problem with home schooling, many of the “ lessons” at school are ambient and not curriculum. Add in phones at young ages and you insulate personalities that should be in social discovery mode while the price of failing is less.
Go to any beach and you’ll wonder if schools remain open. Are Hippy mom’s equipped to be teachers or will it all fall into the hungry hands of AI? We are at the beginning of this trend, forecast several generations down the road isn’t hopeful as humans become more trapped by insulation.

I’ve noticed a pattern, particularly with the content on Insty increasingly being delivered by the algorithm (rather than what it used to be – i.e. the latest posts from followed accounts) and that content often being older posts that have proved popular – the comments are typically more positive. And I don’t mean Joe Turpel positive, I mean good ironic humour positive, or even insightful takes. Keep scrolling down and you start encountering comments referring to other comments, like “All the people making comments saying {gender/race/cause} are shit need to get a life.” Then, if you scroll and scroll… and scroll, you will finally get to those comments. If you’re sitting on socials, consuming content immediately, you’re seeing and taking part in all those hot takes, thinking that’s what the masses are thinking. As time goes on and there’s more engagement, the hot takes all disappear, bumped well down below the fold. So, not actually what the masses are thinking at all.
