Yes, the Surf City El Salvador Pro swings its waiting period gates wide in under a week, giving the surf fan time to assess the state of things, thus far.
On the men’s side, an ugly anti-Brazilian bias is beginning to show as only six surfers in the top ten hail from the Land of Order + Progress and only four of the top four.
Italo Ferreira, Miguel Pupo, Gabriel Medina, Yago Dora, George Pittar, Ethan Ewing, Samuel Pupo, Griffin Colapinto, Leonardo Fioravanti and Filipe Toledo.
Italo, Miguel, Gabriel, Yago, Samuel and Filipe the only Brazilians in the group.
Brazilian surf fans are routinely miffed when one of their own fails to advance in a surf contest, often citing judicial prejudice. The World Surf League, founded in Australia and based in America, actively trying to suppress the Green + Gold.
American, Australian and South American surf fans generally dismiss the critique as unfounded but even the most hardened cannot deny the current rankings.
Though active discrimination is clear, how to fix the problem is murky. The only thing certain is that something must be done or professional surfing’s reputation could become tainted.

That would have been me LT. I don’t mean to suggest that someone being differently abled suggests that they are disabled. Very far from. First off, only a professional with a series of tests can tell if anyone has some neurodivergence. Not me watching a person being interviewed. It just seems that his manner of speech and some of his facial expression, or lack thereof, are similar to people who have been formally diagnosed, and happily identify as neurodivergent. It’s an entire spectrum and most people fall somewhere along it.
He may have some other unique situation, such as the personality of someone whose mother died when he was 6 years old and it has affected him greatly.
You’ll give Kelly a lot of shit but I think that Kelly’s personality, as unusual as it’s always been, has changed since a lot of people close to him started commiting suicide or dying of natural causes at a young age. It’s entirely possible that he now carries some new trauma, on top of whatever was going on as a kid to become the most driven surfer we’ve known. I think it’s possible in the right setting to get Kelly to burst into tears by just saying the single word “Schmoo” or “Sunny”. So it’s not just Ethan, and there’s nothing wrong with being different, as long as you’re happy. There’s an American comedian who looks half Down’s syndrome and laughs about it, and says that while he does not have DS he has an uncle who does have Downs and is the happiest person he knows. Happiness is all that counts, or the pursuit thereof if you’re an american.
I haven’t said anything about the girlfriend angle as yet, but I’ve always dreamed about having a surfer girl (the one time I tried it didn’t work out, and she was a beginner anyway) but to the point of the other commenters she would have to want to surf proper sized waves. When I lived overseas and didn’t have a car i relied on a very kind girl, who lived around the corner, to take me surfing in the morning and instead of driving 20 mins south to the big beachbreak we would drive 40 minutes north to surf smaller waves. I didn’t mind as I was happy to have a lift to the beach but if I had a car, and my friend had been my girlfriend instead, I would have been heading in the other direction for my surf. If I had a girl who could handle all conditions then I think it’d be awesome. Lots of Bonus points if she looked like sawyer.
Bonus Section: when I was in Santa Teresa for a weekend (only time I ever went unfortunately) I was by the pool chilling and this guy played this song that he had written for this girl. Both of them are right there next to the pool. The guy wrote the song and the German girl who this song was about. He got the girl, but I don’t think they lasted very long, as her YouTube channel seemed to indicate she was very much on a mission that didn’t include some sensitive American songwriter. She’s the one in the video below.
Ethan is probably my favourite surfer on tour to watch, although Yago may be up there as he has a bit more variety. Both of them, really. Want Ethan to win a title, if Jordy can’t pull it off.
Funny part is that I did find a German girl in Costa Rica, but she was about 25 years older than that cutie. Had blonde hair and blue eyes, though, which is something that is extremely rare where I grew up.
Ethan is completely normal, just a reserved kid who grew up on a small island.

Man, years ago when I was a grommet, there was this married couple that would frequent our surf spots. He was a decent enough fella but she was a serial pest. A proper thoroughbred fuckwit. She would hassle fuck out of crew and dropped in all the time. Then she’d act all sweet and apologetic like a hapless girl. But if anyone dared respond to her blatant aggro she’d morph into this evil demon banshee and screech and scream the most vile language at the top of her voice. Then she’d try to get her husband to blue the victim.
At first we used to feel sympathy for the husband but after a while we ended up despising him for being a weak cunt.

Ewing just appears to be a bloke who’s reserved around strangers. Watching him when he won snapper and 99% of his focus was on the reaction of his friends and loved ones. You saw his true joy shine when he got near them . Seems like normal behaviour to me.

I didn’t even notice the guy and was told after the fact. Had been surfing for over an hour and he paddles out straight to the top of the peak where my buddy and I had been sitting (there was a proper taking turns lineup up until that point). Starting scowling and staring daggers directly at my buddy and then me when neither he nor I would just let him have the peak (we just paddled around him when he tried to back paddle us). We both took the next set in and cracked some beers under the palapa, and were told by one of the Brazzos hanging out there that Fabio was out there on a distinctive looking board. Same guy who was at the peak, according to my buddy.
Sounds about par for the course.
