"It's a cream-colored void."
The 11 time professional surfing world champion, Kelly Slater, is being dragged online, today, for planting his family in what is being called an “offensively bland” home. The somewhat retired 54-year-old was snapped, with young son Tao and pregnant girlfriend Kalani, enjoying a beautiful family moment dressed in khaki pants and a white t-shirt and sitting on a Malone Sofa which, according to manufacturer Coco Republic “sets the tone.”
According to the celebratory social media post, the sofa’s “generous proportions and softly cushioned arms inviting a slower, more considered way of living. A place to gather, unwind, and connect, it brings a quiet sense of comfort to the room, shaping an environment that feels effortless, warm, and inherently made for family.”
The Slater-Millers chose theirs in an off-white, slightly darker than the white walls. The sofa is on a burlap-toned area rug covering blonde composite floors. In the middle, is a mahogany asymmetrical coffee table with a coffee table book, at its center, simply titled “create.” There is also a vase of white flowers.
There is a coffee-colored throw blanket on the couch and a decorate OK surfboard either mounted to, or leaning up on, the wall. On the adjacent wall is a framed picture of two whales.
Across the room, there is a larger piece of art, which might be described as “bank lobby” hanging over a marble-topped credenza, also in mahogany. A vase of eucalypts leaves is on one edge.
Stuffed between the credenza and a small wall panel are nine or ten surfboards which all appear decorative.
There is a five-foot tall floor lamp with a wooden base and cream shade.
A blonde wicker-backed chair, dimpled bronze side table and hint of a blonde dining room table fill out the space.
All in all, the room is so sterile that it represents nothing.
Geez, what’s all the hubbub? This Strayan Cunt guy really seems to be stressing everyone out? As someone who drops in semi-regularly, it’s really weird to see how heated everyone gets.
You know how it is,
Every forum needs to have their red headed stepchild.
He does seem to be an enthusiastic little bugger, if nothing else. Gets the people going at least.
kids and white furniture…not a great mix.
Nothing sounds as edgy in Australia as “White”
It’s infecting the world, but due to time, some colors have faded to cream
Like a bad pan sauce reliant on dairy
Wait, what, Kelly is 54?
He’s 56
I thought he was 59
Better for the kidos than waterbeds, lava lamps, ashtrays, and shag carpet.

The redundant mod
Bringing back some visceral memories. Being pitched from twice as high, and just as far out. All good until someone catches it on video and sends it to you.
How long is that leg rope.?
“Surfing” capital-S is properly not cool.
Surfing itself is still the funnest.
I was on a website today, trying to figure out who owned O’Neill and came across the surf industry’s leaders’ reaction to the Louis Vuitton surf-inspired fashion line.
Those folks, running the brands, really think that S-urfing is very cool. They were over the moon with Pharrell’s fashion show and clothing line.
Much surfing since you returned, or nothing special?
Also, how about that M’Bappe performance? Mercy. I wouldn’t want to be a defender.
Some, what’s funny is that I have capped my sessions now at an hour because I was overdoing whenever I was surfing before. Great results, surfing better, more energy, etc..
Aussie mate of mine is visiting and it’s properly reminding me how shit the surf can be here. Sorry to be negative Nancy on here—still enjoying time in the water—but I am at a point after being all surf all the time in my twenties that I feel a bit uninspired.
Shift of priorities I guess. An evolution which I suppose is a good thing. Can’t get Iberia out of my head.
Yea. The only people who should be that surf crazy , after their 20s, are people who live around amazing waves. Much more to life, and the surf just becomes about finding back the centre when needed and the exercise that it entails. Getting away from the crowds too.
Nailed it.
No. Surfing is more than that. It feels religious in many ways. Funny thst I was just thinking about this whilst driving back from the nearest (semi) big town and listening to Andre Botha on an Aint that Swell podcast. Never heard of the bloke but he’s got an interesting perspective. Recommended!
I’d love to go into much further detail about the surfing as fulfilment thing but don’t have the time nor mind for it right now. Maybe another time.
It’s a great life, if you can live it.
Not for everyone though.
It’s been a solid two decades—not sure where it’s to go next! We’ll see
Nah I’m here for it. Not writing it off as you well know, just feeling a bit of a warble and a shift. Currently a bit “ye of little faith”
Will check it out, cheers Blowy
who owns o’neill?? seem to recall that they split their wetsuit division from the clothing line at some point, although might have been a bad internet rumor
You’re correct. Apparently the family still owns the suits. A faceless textile corporation in Luxembourg, likely owned by the typical international ghouls, owns the brand and it’s distrusted around the world by regional licensees.
The, likely, largest of these licensees is the US licensee called La Jolla Group, with the face being a man called Rich Brown. I ended up on an industry website and the whole company is staffed, at the executive level, by the usual white bread MBA types; although I don’t doubt that many of them are possibly surfers.
I have to admit that I was starting to develop a bit of a soft spot for the brand because of Jordy and Caity and as I got good, cheap boardies and regular shorts from their outlet store in Weston over the last 15 years, but these new revelations have knocked some sense into my head to remind me that only the small brands and Patagonia retain any level of ‘core’ whatsoever. Still tough to argue with $18 shorts, and similarly priced other clothing, from the outlet store.
I guess that I’d rather buy $35 t shirts from Patagonia, C.I. and other small brands if I have the cash in the bank, though. Especially when the Patagonia stuff gets reduced twice a year.
sounds like you and I went down a similar internet wormhole although you went much deeper than me … used to wear pretty much nothing but O’Neill when outside the office , in part out of east coast allegiance to guys like B Barley (they sponsored BB forever) and in part bc their stuff seemed more tailored toward normal surf dudes (i.e., old men). When I realized I was no longer supporting the core company I quit buying their stuff , although still have a few trunks and shirts laying around
do have a couple wetsuits and some other assorted cold weather gear , will keep them in rotation on that side
Did you ever used to go to the trade shows? I had some mates in university in FL just after the turn of the millennium and they always tried their best to get passes, mostly in order to score free gear. A poor surfer student’s dream.
As a lover of surf gear, I always wondered what the shows in Orlando were like.
Late 80’s and 90’s Orlando trade show was the devils playground..
I do get it. I live close to a lot of really good skiing. Regularly sit down on the lift next to 70-year-old guys who chat that they ski 150 days a season, all day bell to bell. 75% of the time shit conditions, boiler plate, rain, trap crust, rice pudding, etc. I watch them as they ski away, always guys who metronomically make the same turn over and over.
I’m polite, but want to say aren’t you bored out of your skull swinging that same exact turn, left and right, 5,000 times a day for a hundred straight days? I ski a lot of 2-hour sessions on my pass, bang out 10-12 runs, get a little stale and go home. And I am a wild Etch-a-Sketch skiing, full range of turn shapes all over every type of terrain on the mountain, pass through the park, jib the side hits, etc.
These guys though they wear endless 8-hour days making the same turn as a badge of honor, and underneath that you are a pretender.
I don’t know, I think they are either secretly gritting it out for cred, or they are a bit simple in their tastes, have never once so much as thrown the wife’s legs up over her head and still want to go at it every night. But I don’t accept the precept that they are more core because they grind out long sessions endlessly in shit conditions. In my view, they are just wasting the potential broadness of life.
Live next to great skiing/75% of the time shit conditions.
I’m struggling to reconcile the two.
I know, even in the best of zones the skiing is sub optimal 75% of the time, at least for those of you who live it.
Especially in the boundaries.
Kelly son has hair?
( just out of shot ) beige toaster, beige airfryer, beige fridge, beige frypan, beige plates and on the beige rug…belly in beige licking his nuts.
Got to take kids to baby yoga in beige Defender..
He knew Chas and Derek would be all over this one, so he took down the 44 pics of himself off the walls… knowing he’d never have the time to respond every comment here.
I do love the beige on off-white coastal boho meets organic modern style. Did up the newest vacation house like Slate’s, so calm and grown up feeling.
But it’s a style for when you don’t have kids around. You don’t want the decor to bland out their minds, and you don’t want them to fuck up the decor with crayons and Cheeto fingers etc.
Kids are so… sticky. I don’t miss that.

Another prize for the champ
Just putting the surfboards behind the couches isn’t enough. They need to be screwed to the wall aka “quake proofing”.
Well, just go ahead and fuck me up the Gnarloo. I’ve just discovered who Imogen Caldwell Brown is and ……holy moly. She’s a looker, as far as the surf world goes. Imagine being a charger from bumfuck nowhere and a supermodel looking chick from even more bumfuck nowhere starts chasing you down for a root because you surf real well.
She’s lucky I didn’t have kids before her because Rambo Wolf and Tiger Blooms were going to be the names for my first born male and female progeny. You’ll crazy aussies, and your shenanigans.
I wonder if they’ll train their kids to be goofies, like what Craikey’s dad did to him. Presumably so.

Holy fucking late to the party Barney!!! She’s been around for quite awhile but more underground/low profile now. Another kiddo on the way too. In case you haven’t come across it yet, she fucking charges Bluff as well.
Yea. I think I stopped paying attention to the ladies when Lisa Andersen and Layne Beachley retired. Likely because I stopped buying surf magazines around that time. Somehow, Alana still crossed my sight lines though.
I read a couple international surf magazine profiles on her and she does, indeed, charge. Do you reckon that Angelians or pastoral aussies have superior naming customs?
Some Angry Crab said it best about Goofies the other day…
“Lightly retarded but with some special gift.”
