Many years ago, a dream took root in Texas’ inland capital. Namely, there would be waves to surf and for a few short months, that dream was made real all thanks to Doug Coors. Yes, the beer tycoon spent his light ABV fortune building a Wavegarden right there in Austin and people flocked, I think, to enjoy. Well, for some reason unbeknownst to me, Mr. Coors decided it was time to get out of the wave tub game and sold the facility to one Kelly Slater Surf Company, proprietor of the famed Surf Ranch, and Austinites dreams became much richer. Barrels, airs and possibly many visits from Raimana van Bastolear.
Slater and team promptly ripped out the Wavegarden tech and then…….
…………….nothing.
Piles upon piles of nothing. No rumors of barrels, no hints of airs, Raimana van Bastolear staying very put in Lemoore, California.
And it only looks like trouble ahead. The Austin Business Journal is reporting that the Austin Surf Club Venture LP, which reportedly raised $66 million from investors, has been slapped with something north of $16 million in liens, halting all construction.
The property owners, which may not include Kelly Slater anymore because I think he sold his stake in KS Wave Co. to the World Surf League and I think they also sold the entire shootin’ match to someone else, are attempting some work arounds in order to get construction moving again. Apparently, there is a petition to establish a “Municipal Management District” to generate property tax revenue that can then be flipped into nuts and bolts for the big blue plow.
Ex-NFL quarterback Drew Brees allegedly thinks that is a good idea.
According to Austin Surf Club Venture LP, around $171 million is needed to finish the tub and mixed-use lifestyle residential community things.
Austinites giving up and just driving the hour-forty north to Waco instead.

Here’s my oldest surf photo . As a teenager when floaters on head high beachies were the most radical shit ever. Still love a good lip and roof glide to free fall. The ol’ knees aren’t so stoked on it however.
Floaters are still radical, kudos on the water shot.

When you’re in the flats the ride is typically over. A floater that connects sections is the best type of floater IMO because it keeps the ride going.
I also do find it crazy watching someone like Italo in the flats, beat so many “unmakeable” sections, like he is pumping on some kind of hydrofoil, only to make the face again.

Seems like if they went with Perfect Swell tech they could run a simultaneous setup on each side and quadruple the amount of surfable waves being ridden with a limitless variety of waves to offer.
Kelly’s train is cool in some aspects but for most practical purposes it is a full lemon. Especially for competitive applications.

Do you watch Teen Titans Go in Spanish Jack? i discovered them because it was one of my daughter’s favorites and realized this show is hilarious for adults too. Then I saw an episode in English and it wasn’t nearly as good. Dubbing has come a long way in the last 15 years.
I followed along in spanish but since it is not something I learned early in life it just doesn’t hit the same.

One of the crew on a ments boat trip I went in in the early 2000’s told me about a scheme he had going on in his village. There was a decent sized pond and they stocked it with X amount of fish. One of the stocked fish had a tag. People paid an entry fee and were allowed to keep any fish they caught. The person who caught the tagged fish got a large prize.
Sounded like an excellent way to make money. Everyone gets a feed ( of shit-raised freshwater trash fish) , one person scores a prize and the owners make bank. Bit of fun, everyone wins. Maybe not the fish.

You are creating a narrative the blends the roles of the wave technology company the developer. KS Wave Co is the wave tech company (although under Ziff they did have illusions of being a development co) – but for this project, they are just a paid vendor and only involved in providing the wave installation (and KS is still involved). Discovery Land Co. is the developer and driving the project 100%. They are now working through the steps to restart the construction. DLC’s track record is pretty increadble and they are the most proficient developer yet to enter the surf park space. This is not a dead project by any means. Love the gonzo journalism of BG – but this one should be a bit more based on facts along with the ruthless humor.
