I didn't do it on purpose.
There has been consistent swell across California for over a month now. Some weeks are, of course, better than others but there are always waves and the water is very warm. These last three days it has gone a bit fatter and softer and so I’ve been riding my trusty Somma Mini Super. It is 5’1, catches waves easy and goes fast. I’ve also been wearing a pair of Stüssy trunks. They were a birthday present, I believe, from a few years back.
I have surfed both morning and afternoon, two of the last three days then again this morning, equalling a total of five surfs though it was only this morning, after I was finished enjoying some chonky backwash, that I realized my trunks match my board exactly.
Both a pale lavender.
I looked up, and around, my face a pale white.
For five surfs, those in the water and those on the beach certainly thought it color-coordinated on purpose. That I did it for flair and probably have other boards that match other trunks.
Right now, and to set the record straight, I did not do it on purpose nor have other boards that match other trunks.

First thoughts were about being in New York 9 yrs earlier and getting some nice photos of them from up the Empire State, and wishing I’d had enough cash back then to also have gone up the Towers.
Second thoughts were a disappointment that I wouldn’t be able to go up them on my next trip to New York (which didn’t end up happening for another 8yrs) and what a waste of a good view out to sea it was.
Third thoughts were to crack a beer, smoke a bong and head to the beach.
Ended up catching a few in conditions similar to todays ‘expression session’ at the trestle.
Then got some mussels off the rocks, caught a couple of Kahawai (what the Aussies call ‘sea salmon’) and headed home to put the catch in the fridge for later.
After that went down the pub were it was obviously the talk of the world for the next long while…

They’re swim trunks for swimming, usually with an elastic waist. Board shorts (no elastic) if you’re doing something on a board.
The body between a persons shoulders and waist is the ‘trunk’, aka torso.
Old fashioned mens swimwear had the body covered, hence the word ‘trunks’.

As kids we called our speedo’s ‘togs’ (from the Roman ‘toga’) and were for actual swim racing.
And called our longer shorts ‘beach baggies’, that our mother’s made.
‘Board-shorts’ came in with the shortboard revolution in surfing as far as I’m aware.
My older brother had Hang 10’s earlier, but I remember getting my first real pair called Trackers in the early/mid 70’s and was cool as fuck, before that I’d had Stubbies which were lame.
So they’re all pretty much the same thing with various names in different regions.
But yes, ‘trunks’ shouldn’t be used on our side of the Pacific…
