The event heralded the removal of invasive ice plant from beach bluffs and also the gifting of almost brand-new surfboards to grommets, or groms, standing there on the cobbled stone.
But let us race to the very end of Ethan Ewing’s Round 3, Heat 4 battle against Kanoa Igarashi. The sturdy Australian got the first lick, a 5.50, and backed it up with a 6.50 though it was not enough to beat the man from Japan. Igarashi nabbed the biggest score on his third wave, a 6.67, chased it with a 6.00 and, thus, ended Ewing’s campaign.
After, with a look of dissatisfaction spread across his face, Ewing handed his DHD to a young boy wading in the water.
He then proceeded to strip off his singlet and sign some autographs. The young boy seems shocked and appears to ask Ewing if the board was really his. Ewing seems to confirm and what a treasure.
Professional surfers, of course, rarely give boards away as, in most cases, they do not outright own them. Shapers “give” them eight to ten at a time, the ones that aren’t “magic” given back in order to defray the high cost of materials. Surfboards are a razor thin margin business and every little bit helps.
But why, do you think, Ewing played cobbled stone Santa Claus? Pure generosity or frustration at the way that particular sled performed?
How did Darren Handley feel? Do you wonder if having the board given away is preferable to having the board punched by a miniature balled up fist?
Do you imagine the grom, or grommet, will use the board for its intended purpose or wall hang it?

looks like he’s trying a board for lefts….as usually his boards are finetuned for back hand………it actually looks like quite a few people were struggling..testing………then check out what they ride in the comps….you do not surf your magic boards free surfing!
If you catch a homerun from the opposing side, any self respecting fan tosses it back. So a grom, say, could just politely say “no thanks!” , and hold out for a loc stick from a loc shaper… seems only right

Therein lies the problem , or one of them…making 10 bds for your team rider so he can pick the magic ones , what a load of BS…….you just get average boards, and pick the best one……so why is it the best one FFS??
There is no reason EE shouldn’t have magic boards…and obviously he doesn’t as you would never give away your magic contest board…..EE has not improved in the last 2 years while others are flourishing….Jack Robinson has become a Journey man same deal , as he gets 10 bds at a time…….the Brazilians actually have their comp magic boards…….so you never see brazilians with average boards..

Body language tells a lot and when I see him at events he honestly just seems not into it and like he wants to be somewhere else. Who knows Bong might have said we want you to do three more years on tour then ya can go free surf?
I then compare his body language with him in STID where hes surfing different boards in good waves and its night and day and the surfing is the best footage I’ve seen in years.
As for his boards whenever I see him round here he’s ripping the absolute fuck out of it so can’t really see that being an issue. I truly feel hes just over the tour and counting the days until he retires back to Straddie and just surfs decent waves again most days.

if what you are saying is true….so sad to see talent wasted, but competition is full of coulda/shoulda , but didn’t…..for me Mick was super Comp orientated…Parko had more talent….but didn’t have the Mick Discipline…so one world title was enough…..Dane was just paid way too much and he didn’t need to perform in Comps…he had the money…which sorta polluted his competitive drive…..FFS $5M a year?
but back to EE….not sure his boards are good for him they look like recycled Micks boards, which were made for Mick….it seems EE has b grade versions of Micks boards and doesn’t have magic competition craft…..sames as jack…
Jack said in a post heat he’s 85kg. Definitely heavier than he was 2 years ago and his boards look too small. I’m pretty sure I remember reading when he linked up with Leandro and started having success after the Mexico comp Leandro got him to go up a litre or 2 and drop a kilo or 2.
85 kegs is fucking heavy for a surfer of his height ay Disco.I’m 5 10 and when I was surfing heaps my weight was always between 78 and 80kgs which felt right for me personally. Everyone is different though I suppose
To my eyes Jacks small wave surfing has always seemed a weakness and his boards have never seemed right and I would LOVE to hear more about this from Brutus like what he would be looking to do with them. Caaaaaarn Mo give us the rundown brother yeeeeeeeeeeeeeew

it’s bizarre..in El Salvador Jack looked like a hipster riding a step up board….there just seems to be no spark there…with Eric’ step up boards he’s always looked great…there’s no spark/no nothing to flare up on…..like EE…….their equipment is neutral and by that I mean an average board where you can overpower the board and control it……but a magic board is one which challenges the rider to…”c’mon push harder/lay me over on rail/faster”…actually adding to your surfing…….lotta work to done if they want….??

When it comes to boards you’re one of the best and most important shapers/designers of of all time, where as I’m just a cunt from the Far North Coast so I’m genuinely interested in hearing whatever you think about the whole thing bruz
yeah Jack struggled on tour to qualify as his Trev kept him outa comps and made him free surf perfect waves…..so he had to go back and battle in small waves …but he qualified at Sunset by winning the final…….on step up boards.
As I have been doing a shit load of interviews lately …a lot of questions have been whats the difference between 20 years ago to now….?
I have given my opinion that what we did 20 yrs ago ….is the foundation for the modern surfboard from a rocker and fin point of view…is now more than 20 yrs old….current shaper/brands are still tweaking what we did….so they are nearly all the same…except for the top guys who’s shapers have customised their designs…compare a JS/DHD to Gabs boards or JJF’s or Italo’s ….Yago looks great/Brazilians seem to have a lot of magic under them…as they work at it….and don’t just get 10/20 similar boards to test and hope…..it’s a science…I have a shitload of stuff coming on Surfline/Stab and my socials…talking about what the remedy is….have I had people havin a crack at me fuck yeah…are there people out there who are threatened by me, Fuck yeah…..even what I post on here gets back to some sensitive shapers….old school…” if ya can’t back ya mouth up,well, shut the fuck up,LOL!”

Hey I have been hit up by the media for the 1st time in quite a few years……just so you know I am getting indirect comments behid the scenes there’s a few shapers who are taking my comments as aimed at them…when in fact , all I am pointing out is whats wrong and how to fix it.
I am not sure about Ethans and jacks boards they just seem a bit dead……you cannot have a magic board without the fins being perfectly placed and great fins……then you have to combine Hull shape with fins…….I am not sure how much experimenting goes on with their equipment….but there are signs in their surfing there’s no magic in their boards..I would use the 6 mths between seasons and get in the water with them..move fins, spice up the Bottom shapes…more speed,more power,more carve and leave the tail slide and check turns out of the repertoire…..it takes work….and the final question is can the some of the current top shapers go outside their comfort zone/ pro formula and break some new ground with design???

I am more than content with my beloved Buttweiser which is soft, rubber in the shape of a beer bottle. It has an extremely soft and flexible opening top which forms a perfect seal at any size. I highly recommend them and is easily one of my better online purchases after a day on the piss.
