America’s favorite rich grandmother Martha Stewart was excoriated, overnight, after posting, then quickly deleting, a Halloween image wherein she was costumed like a surf photographer. Older surf industry enthusiasts and participants recall yesteryear, pre-internet saturation, I suppose, when the surf photographer was queen. Fat magazine retainers, stacks of cash for features, even higher stacks for covers, expense accounts rivaling Wall Street executives.
Alas, the internet came followed by social media etc. and the surf photograph lost all monetary value. The once high business class flying brought very very low.
You can understand the backlash Steward received while “punching down” for Halloween. The 85-year-old has responded, declaring, “I am distressed that my Halloween costume yesterday, which was intended to bring more awareness to the very serious subject of homelessness, has offended people, which was never my intention. Homelessness continues to remain one of America’s greatest challenges and ongoing crises, something that I care deeply about and I have spent a significant amount of time and effort supporting charities that combat this ongoing social epidemic.”
But do you think that her intention was, actually, to bring more awareness to the plight of the surf photographer or do you think some good fun poking was the actual goal?
Whatever the case, it is far more transparent a statement than anything released by the World Surf League since 2015.

The big reward for surf photogs back in the day was never money or fame.
It was the hope that thirty plus years from the event, you could be arguing online about whether or not you coined the name for a wave that you neither found nor surfed.
So worth being sent to some steaming, disease ridden third world shithole with a couple of pro surfers who had as much respect for you as Veruca Salt did for her daddy, and then standing on a sharp, uneven reef, under a sweltering tropical sun for interminable hours in order to get images of people and places who actually possess talent and beauty.
All so worth it,
