Did you know that Greg Webber, the wavepool inventor and shaper of bananas for Kelly, has a fabulous younger brother called Will?
Will lives in Angourie on Australia’s far north coast where he shapes surfboards, some of which bear the famous curved Webber pedigree.
Two days ago, while checking a surf spot called Spookies, next to the more famous, though less exciting, Angourie Point, Will says he saw a “fifteen-foot” Great White breach “seven foot in the air.”
On his Facebook page, Will wrote: Just saw a 15 foot Great White breach off Spookies !!!!! Fucken raddest thing I’ve ever seen !!!!!!
Will tells the story in an interview with the Daily Examiner,
“I just went to check the surf and sat down for about 10 seconds; it was probably about a kilometre out and the thing just jumped out seven feet in the air.
“This thing was definitely hunting, so I told a guy who was just going out that I saw a giant Great White out there, and asked him to tell the others. One guy came out of the water and he had a cut on his head and it was bleeding, but the others stayed out.”
“It was about a 15 footer and had its whole profile from the top. It came out like a freight train, if that thing hit you you’d be in half.”
Shaking and in awe of the predator’s sheer power, Webber rushed down to notify the four surfers who were in the water at the time.
“This thing was definitely hunting, so I told a guy who was just going out that I saw a giant Great White out there, and asked him to tell the others. One guy came out of the water and he had a cut on his head and it was bleeding, but the others stayed out.”
Webber said he had always wanted to see a shark, just not when he was in the water.
“I’m definitely not surfing today and I’ll be surfing very close to the rocks from now on. It’s burnt into my brain. I’ve always imagined but now I know what it looks like… it was like a missile.”
Meanwhile at Ballina, an hour or so north, and the current shark capital of the world, four Great Whites were just spotted near surfers at North Wall.
Unless there’s a haunted house on the beach let’s assume any break named Spookies is chock full of sharks.

Can’t believe people surf at Ballina; that place looks like a creepy shark den; you’re asking for it by paddling out there.
Even prior to the shark fest of the last couple of years I always felt a bit nervy at Ballina, it’s really alive in that water, I feel for the locals down there and if you’re trying to keep numbers down in the lineup then you don’t need to convince me any.
You couldn’t pay me to paddle out there. We have a few spots in Hawaii that are notoriously sharky; some are right in front of sacrificial heiau (temples used for religious killing), and they are spooky and sharky but people still go, and they get bumped, bitten, and killed (Kawaa being numero uno). Ballina gave my gf and I the same feeling as Kawaa; basically a “fuck that, keep driving; can’t believe people surf here” kind of feeling. We liked Lennox and the Pass much better.

Many people make the paddle to South Wall anymore? Even 5 years ago I felt like that was sketchy as fuck.

Ocean swimmers are even more nuts than surfers. At least we have the chance that the shark will either bite the front or back of the board, allowing us to escape major injury or even injury free; swimmers are fucked. I’ve always been afraid of AU waters because of the variety of sharks and consistency of attacks but after visiting AU, I realize that AU has way more surfers in the water and much more ocean activity than Hawaii, which makes me think that per capita, we probably have more attacks than AU. I see sharks at least a few times a year and there have been attacks at all the spots I surf most. I guess, it’s mainly just a coincidence thing, i.e., the person just happened to be near a gnarly shark. Very sad. I try to limit exposure by always sitting inside someone and constantly moving; pretty sure that does nothing.
Yeh agree, I’ve surfed Cabarita and there is so much life in the water. It’s a good sign in a way. I guess it’s the same from around Cabarita to Angourie, Ballina being the worst due to its river mouth. But what do I know, I am not Australian. So I’m asking to the local guys if there are any around, what is the safest place from Noosa to Byron Bay?
