Well, if you don’t want to commit to stopping checking peeps out except in extraordinary circumstances, then this is a reasonable solution, and the “get fucked” part is somewhat BG. I sure as hell don’t like mods checking anyone out, for curiosity’s sake, and would love an apology for such behavior from Mariano (let alone his un-modlike language), but this seems unlikely.
Part of what sucks is that anonymity is assumed, generally speaking, and if it is explicitly stated that mods will look you up in real life, then it sucks a little less, and people can be that much more guarded with their opinions.

Call it trolling if you want, but throughout this discussion, I have been far more civil than the mods, and I am genuinely, perhaps naively, frustrated that mods check people out in real life for no real good reason. I believe that anonymity is very important for honest internet discussion, in as much as it requires mods to (usually) keep it civil.

Is BG known as a throw people under the bus site? I don’t know, I never really thought about it as such, but for a site with comments as a defining feature, there are clear benefits to committing to anonymity.
One of the things that makes BG commentary so good is that people don’t hold back their views, generally, (except to keep it more civilly articulated than on other sites). It would be sad to see this change if people were more worried about getting stalked or worse.

Yeah, I agree, and I know that being a mod is pretty thankless and you get moaned at a lot. I also know that anonymity makes conversations better because it allows frankness, and sometimes honesty. The mods are the reason BG is like a cultivated garden of bitchy discourse, rather than a shitty overgrown jungle like Stab, so overall Mariano is doing a pretty damn good job.

To be honest a degree of “stalking” is an important part of a Mod’s role. Yes we can see your Ip’s, comments on other websites and obviously your comment history here. For me it’s a way to gauge an individuals overall worth to the site.
Sometimes it’s a way to follow a lead on a story, other times I’d admit to just being curious/suspicious as to ones real identity.
But I’ve never have nor would I ever throw someone under the bus…

I’m cool with the light touch moderating of comments, which you guys do well, but I fail to see the argument that “because I have access to this information and because I’m curious” its OK to stalk.
I understand that the role of the moderator is to keep it civil, not to peep. I also understand that there might be unique circumstances in which you can make an argument to look up an individual, with regard to libel or defamation for which this site might be held accountable, but “I wonder” falls outside those bounds and is frankly creepy.
