Master Joel Tudor claims WSL marginalizes 70% of California's surfers!
Anger at feeling marginalized is a many splendored thing and no one but no one wears it better than Joel Tudor. The wonderful jiu jitsu master and longerboard surfer from San Diego is almost always pushed to the corner by some event beyond his control. Six days ago it was alcoholic beverages sponsoring World Surf League events (watch Mikey soar!) and today it is the World Surf League allegedly removing his Duct Tape Invitational contest from the just around the corner U.S. Open of Surfing in Huntington Beach.
But let’s let him tell us about it! He posted the following on his Instagram:
No @vanssurf @vans DTI HB This year! Our KOOK buddies @wsl asked if they could run the event without us this year! Way to kill surf history in ca…logging has been a part of contests in hb since 1959 — zero respect for its foundation!
DTI we can safely assume stands for Duct Tape Invitational. 150-odd comments followed, most praising Joel and telling the WSL to fuck itself etc. Joel responds to many. Let’s read those context free!
it’s never something we even care about ….just upset that they personally removed my event for no reason ….no longboard at all on schedule— mind you … we pay or the event and they ask for no DTI === they can eat my shorts

Tudor is a twat. I thought it was his ever waning relevancy driving him to be an asshole, but if you think about it, he was always an asshole and an ego-maniac. Anyone remember when his dad Joe beat up a minor in Huntington Beach who was in a contest with Joel when he was still a teenager? It runs in the family. For God’s sake, this is a guy who once made Lorraine from Mitch’s North cry as he went on a rant about how Mitch’s shouldn’t call itself a core shop because they stopped selling his Kookbox boards. If anyone on here is familiar with Mitch’s North, you understand that making Lorraine cry is an egregious act of no small magnitude. Next time you are surfing Cardiff, burn the asshole.
The WSL is whack as fuck, always has been. This is just another example. His stats might be off but the sentiment is true. Logging in a huge part of the SoCal surf culture. The DTI is a fun event and shows people you don’t have to be a goonie shortboarder with no neck and lots of shitty grey work tattoos to have fun. It’s a shame they pulled it out of this year’s festival.

It was a cringeworthy part of the US Open, a time time to go surf/take a dump/have ya’ way with her/get pissed (just anything else than watch) while the ‘logger’ clowns had their way with the shit that is HB. Sorry to sound so uninformed, but why can’t he organize a ‘Duct Tape’ contest outside the WSL strictures? Are they like the Mafia and won’t allow any, er, competition competition?
Maybe 3M could sponsor it, and they could name various heat groupings around other tape-related products; masking tape, electrical tape, Celebrity Sex tape.
I’m not a Tudor / logging fan but we do need some variety in the world. I don’t begrudge his ilk their time to have some badly-scored sliding.

A lot of people don’t know just how brilliant and unselfish Joel Tudor really is. They don’t tell how he teaches math to underprivileged and special needs children. He’ll sit with those kids for hours, counting with them on his duct tape rigged abacus. Sure, he’ll call them retards, but in a loving way.
And the biased shortboard media will never tell you how he donates his time to the local children’s hospital every week…Sure, he berates the oncologists in the cancer ward for not using bloodletting or leeches as a treatment option, but he means well.
No one has made me hate longboarding as much as Joel Tudor.

the only event that the OC yahoos would miss is if the WSL somehow cancelled the get-drunk-and-knock-over-porta-potties-and-grab-young-girls portion of the festivities
