I’ll be truly honest here. I love Australia. I love Australia so much that, as a six and seven-year-old boy in Papua New Guinea I told everyone that I was, in fact, Australian even eating Vegemite to prove it (even though I thought Vegemite was chocolate spread and when I first tasted it wondered what in the world Australians had done to chocolate).
Waltzing Matilda.
Baz Luhrmann.
Etc.
Though as much as I love Australia, I love a good old fashioned surf turf war more. Locals rising up a la the Blackshorts, Bra Boys, Westside Santa Cruzers, whoever claims Silver Strand as home.
But we’ve all gone as soft as our beards, let’s be completely honest, and now Wavestorms clog every lineup while we keep our hands in our armpits grumbling.
Except for Oceanside, California and God bless each and every Oceansider.
JS Industries, as you certainly read, recently moved a warehouse into the North County, San Diego’s beating heart. Oceanside, as you may not know, is the actual epicenter of southern California’s shaping industry with many shapers, glassers, etc. plying their trade just east of the 5 freeway.
All fine and good except JS is Australian and a warehouse ain’t a factory. Simply storing boards being shipped in from overseas.
The local board building community revolted, tagged the JS warehouse’s freshly painted black walls (freshly painted black over an iconic-ish mural) “you fuk up! fuck ozz. O’side. Get out!!!”
Like good old fashioned times but do you think the Oceansiders will keep turning up the heat or do you think JS Industries’ business model superiority will crush the plucky locals?

One of the bands I roadied for used to say that Byron Bay was the second best place to play in the world for ‘hot gals’. The winner was Finland. When the summer rock festivals were on, they knew there was a short window of warmth, so all the girls were taking advantage of the weather by attending in bikini tops which made these Western Sydney boys ‘Very Excited’.
I had a Norwegian girlfriend and was over there in summer and winter.
I saw check out chicks that were 10’s.
Worked with a guy in Manly that was pretty much a stud.
Traveled the world and in his opinion Israeli girls were the hottest.
Israeli girls have a fine reputation. Unfortunately, the only ones I have met were the male surfers and their reputation, while also preceding, is not so fine.
Have met a nice Israeli surfer down here in Vic a few years ago.
Played ice hockey with a very good looking Israeli woman here with great skills and we got on like a house on fire. If her gumby boyfriend wasn’t playing with us, I would have definitely made a move.
I asked about rinks in Israel and she said Russian figure skaters were taking all the ice time which I thought was interesting.
Was a doco on SBS years ago about share houses in India that get passed down to the next bunch of Israelis that have just got out of military service.

I’ve been saying this for years! The Encinitafication of Oceanside needs to come to an end and we Osiders are biting back! I guarantee someone from JS talked to someone from Encinitas and that conversation was something like
“Oh Yeah, bring the import board depot here. Paint it black! Oside is hella hip now, we took over South O and were working our way into downtown. The line up is becoming more friendly also, power in numbers you know. Did you know Stab is there?”
Encinitas California brought Australia to Oceanside is my bet!

Most shapers are flakes and boneheads with little business acumen. It’s no wonder they can’t capitalize on their product. If you find a way to make the board ordering process easy and provide good service, well, which surfer wouldn’t want that. Ordered 100’s of boards from local shapers and the majority of the time the wait time is longer than anticipated, the glass job is too heavy, the airbrush isn’t as requested, the dimensions are off, and you have to dust off your board when you bring it home. That’s why the “magic” board has always been so elusive. Now you can buy the same magic board off the rack each time and not have to worry about spending $700 on a board that doesn’t work.

I’ve bought a saddle and all the stuff and a cool outfit and special boots, all from a guy at the market who promised it was an important part of Aussie culture.
Kangaroo riding is almost as scary as drop bears and mating magpies dive bombing innocent school kids from behind ……… Never rode a KANGA , CB but ….. We used to ride the Bush Pigs every weekend ….. and took precautions …. making sure we tied our legs to the end of the bed …. to avoid being torn apart by gravity , at the event horizon , surrounding the BLACK HOLE

Bought a custom board from a local shaper with young family in Oceanside recently. I love the board, hated it at first but love it now. I wish the JS shop was there when I visited. I would have spat at the entry as I passed by. Aus scum!

For those shops that don’t make their own brand as the main board, you will find a Firewire, Catch Surf and other pop outs in most of the big shops. And JS in most of them before the warehouse showed up.

Sounds to me that the issue isn’t as much imports, but that people are a bit upset that JS is importing more than others.
Time will tell how upset people actually are.

I imagine that it is the location. JS opened in the area where many many local shapers reside. If they opened in Huntington I doubt anyone would care but I am not an angry Californian shaper. People from Huntington also support Trump FYI
should mention that the back yard board market is very active too… Shops owned by persian retailers aren’t where you order customs.
Do any of you think Matt Parker, owner of the best surf shop in all of San Clemente (just ask Chas and David), and shaper of Album Surfboards is getting the same heat for moving to the Goldie (Tweed Heads) and opening up shop there. I assume not, as Kerrzy is his brand ambassador. Parker and company do make beautiful boards.

Album’s in Aus are built in Aus, not built offshore and shipped in. A lot of Aussie board builders are employed/contracted and are earning part of their living by building Album boards in Aus.
I wasn’t thrilled when Album turned up here, but now I get paid to lam them my tune has changed.
I think if JS used local SoCal ghosties and glass houses to build his boards for the USA market this wouldn’t be an issue.

I am against guys like Matt Parker who make surfboards that make wave catching easier. Why can’t everyone ride HP JS surfboards and fall off the back of every wave like before.
Well, I feel pretty bummed about Lost and CI boards over here. But one of my mates makes a good living out of returning 3 month old boards for replacements because they turn brown. I think he went about 2 years doing it.
