"So powerful have the Witzig photographs become in surfing mythology, they have created false memories."
The Australian surf photographer John Witzig, founder of Tracks magazine and responsible for some of the surfing lifestyle’s most enduring images, has made the bombshell claim that surf photos have the ability to implant false memories in people who weren’t there.
If you’ve been around surf a while you’ll know Witzig’s most famous shots.
There’s a shirtless Bob McTavish standing in front of an FX Holden in 1966 examining an empty Noosa lineup (Witzig says he was pressured, even then, not to take the photo, “There were various people who didn’t want photographs taken of Noosa,”); Country Soul, new parents with their baby in a groovy kitchen picked high with homegrown vegetables, a photo that came to symbolise the surfer counter culture movement and its back-to-mother-earth ethos; a water shot Mark Richards getting rad at Haleiwa in 1976.
So good they fry your mind? Well, yeah, sorta.
Johnny Witzig, eighty now, made the claim his photos could implant memories in an interview with a Sydney daily’s sports writer on the back of his latest exhibition, which displays twenty four of his most iconic images.
Ain’t as crazy as it sounds.
Studies have demonstrated that it’s possible to implant false memories through various methods, including showing people doctored or AI-edited photos. For instance, research has shown that participants could be led to believe they experienced events that were actually not real, like being lost in a mall or participating in events like a hot air balloon ride, through suggestive techniques which often involve visual cues like photographs.
As for real life, surf, you and me, you ever believed you were somewhere you weren’t and how did you find out?
I defs saw the Tom Carroll snap at Pipe; Kelly and Rob high-five, several world champs pouring so much heat up their beaks I thought their precious hearts would explode.
Some other stuff not so sure in hindsight.

The premise is true Derek. Once I shat out a perfect, 1″ sphere of a turd on the footpath in a misguided attempt to rudely fart while leaving a friend’s place at Kingscliff in the early 90s. (The only downside to a commando lifestyle). There were 3 witnesses. I’m no longer in anything more than fb friend contact with the home owner and the girlfriend of that time is (rightfully) still bitter towards me.
Sure, I told the story a few times, but find it a bit rich that a mate now tells the story and claims to have been an eye witness to this, whatever a shameful triumph is.
Wait just one second! “Not something I eat.” What is your major malfunction, Private Pile?!
And here I was thinking you’re a man. Or at least a man in a gorilla suit. What gives? Don’t tell me you’re a vegetarian.
Seeings how that chili has won 4th of July Chili Cook-Offs time and again, it sounds like you think my scorn is prize worthy too
years and years ago I actually sent Negs my venison chili recipe in a comment response. (minus 1 or 2 ingredients, probably the Jameson whiskey addition). He could look it up in the archives. It’s no joke fucking amazing. Cook one day, serve it the next kind of good.
You’ve never earned an invite. You could have done less and earned my world famous venison chili. But no. You’ve only earned scorn. Not the valiant sort either.
Are you Mexican, or Mexican’t?
I only hire hard workers who don’t complain.
I appreciate your concern, but I got 1′ beach break, family in town and an air show in the fog to tag and bag right now. Soon though, real soon
Dora out alone right there.

I had a post-gig memory of Iggy passing me the mike and the two of us singing a duet.
My mates told me that he had indeed passed me the mike but had quickly grabbed it back when it was obvious I wasn’t skilled in the vocal arts.
Aahhhh memories…
Where? In the Zeeland or were you elsewhere?
Auckland Town Hall, early 90’s
Ho Beefy nice shout out for the late Harold Iggy. Iggy was a quiet and soft-spoken legendary Hawaiian surfer/shaper spanning multiple generations. He passed in 2019 from a heart attack just outside Lanikai while testing new downwind SUP designs with Robby Naish’s brother Randy. I was stoked to have had just received a new custom 11’0 from him for Maui Maliko to Kanaha for open ocean downwind runs before he slipped away from us way too soon at 71 years old.
Some of Iggy’s early days in the mid 1970’s were at a Kakaako surf shop owned by Rich Parr who had to flee the islands soon after he was acquitted of shooting to death 3 men who broke into his shop to attack him after some hard drinking at a bar next door. Iggy took over Parr’s shop for a while before opening his own shop. Cheers https://uploads.disquscdn.c…
Did some of his finest work for Lynne Boyer!
Harold was one of the greatest designers to live , very humble man and genius!
Wonder what his take on dick pics is?
I still hate peoples who get to the beach and then call all their mates telling them how good it is and send pics / video. Farkkkers. Why not at least wait to you come in if you have to do it. Why ruin it for me
The real debate is around the legendary wave caught by G Noll at Makaha.
There is a photo , taken by Albie Falzon, that records the take off, drop and disappearance into the white water.
But some dispute the recorded reality because, well not sure why.
Various self appointed surf historians or other scammers cannot let the truth be seen as it is not in accord with their myth making.
Always the hucksters wanting the last word.
yep and Albie said the wave was only 15′!
It’s always hilarious when Bibi Rielly pretends that he was where he never has been.
It’s even funnier when he imagines that he was ever a good writer anywhere.
Even funnier was Chas and JP’s recent attempted defense of Rielly’s pitiful lack of literary chops.
I think Derek has stopped defending the indefensible, but here’s a flashback to when he could smugly blame the ongoing atrocities on October 7th, or however else he was trying to find justification.

After early righteous proclamation of the need of Israel to defend itself yabba dabba do Senor Riles dropped the topic like it was an unmentionable turd in grade 4 undies when it became undeniable that the objective was not merely defence but obliteration. And now: Israel sets itself upon another sovereign nation and begins bombing its territory – international laws be dammed etc. The whole thing has been wargamed out long ago and now the plan is simply being unfurled. Unreal banana peeled. Disgusting.
Best leave it to the Islamist pacifists.

Netanyahu – bad
Ayatollah Ali Khamenei – good
Must be a simple life
Ah yep. That’s exactly what I was insinuating.
How’d you know I had a sponge bob shirt?
I really don’t see the ongoing atrocities as defending the indefensible.
Israel were attacked by Hamas/Palestine , then Hezbollah jumped in with the Houti’s as Iran’s proxies and started firing rockets at Israel…again/still.
Iran then crosses the line by firing ballistic missiles at Israel ,and still to come Israels response.
At least Israel is targeting the leadership of the terrorist groups with great success….Hezbollah fired 140 rockets at Israel , so the killed their leader….
with abit of luck Israel will just keep getting the leaders of the terroroist groups!
No, Mo. Defending Israel’s indefensible atrocities is beyond the pale by any metric.
Well put.
Israel has the opportunity to shape middle east peace. To regain their footing for lasting peace with the Abraham Accords. Now is their time to push Hamas, Hezbollah and Iran if necessary into the grave. No better time than now.
America’s relationship with Israel has always been about holding them back. No more. They’re off the leash and there’s nothing Obama and his Iran loving cunt friends can do to stop Israel. Slaughter Hamas. Slaughter Hezbollah. Slaughter Iran’s Mullahs.
Then start lasting peace
I would encourage you to read Wednesdays with Bob. No lack of literally chops in this one.
That book was a sure cure for my insomnia.
I couldn’t even make it thru a couple sentences before somnolence set in.
And for that I am eternally grateful. ZZZZZzzzzz … snork
you sound scorned Huli, lift your (usually high level) game
Nah Ric I’m just trying to shake the old head cheese up. He’s gotta be able to take the gouda with the bad. You might not disa-brie that his aged blue humor is often grating and I’m not very fondue of it. You can take my curd for it too that his prose is also often a load of Kraft and I think we might be cheddar off without it. I will however continue to pray to sweet Cheesus that he will do feta in the future.
The things you see when ya havent got a cracker. Good talkin mate
Remember that shot of Da Bull, on the beach at Waimea? Well I was already out back, waiting for that pussy. I remember it well.
The iconic image of Greg Noll is from Pipeline, shot by John Severson – there’s a problem with your false memories
https://uploads.disquscdn.c…
Na, not that pic. The one at Waimea.
Yeah, I was at the first Kyuss gig.
Saw them in ’88, but not the first gig…..(that count?)
maybe ’89, right before I went off to the first Iraq mistake.
Can’t have been great, cos that first album, Wretch, is a real stinker.
Katzenjammer!
Is that good? I can’t remember. It’s been a LONG time since I was subjected to/begrudgingly enjoyed Kyuss on dozens of surf trips. I just remember the Goddamn sonofabitch and I WAN’T SOME PUSSY – FROM A BAD BITCH – WITH A BIG BIKE, YEAHHAH! songs, which clearly, not great. The other three albums… You know when something’s not really your thing but you still know it’s really good? That’s them for me.
Kyuss best enjoyed stoned in a dark room with good headphones. Welcome to Sky Valley. https://uploads.disquscdn.c…
Avila Beach in 1986 when it was 4-6 feet with howling Santa Ana winds. Sadly all the waves were still close outs but I’d still take off on my Morey boogie mach 7 and get barreled for at least 1 or 2 seconds. Full credit due to my AMF Voit duck fins and Town n Country bodyboard leash.
did you put stickers on the bottom of your boogie board?
Of course! A big ass Town n Country sticker purchased at Wavelengths in Fresno. For some weird reason Fresno actually had two surf shops.
I luv it! I always wondered why kids did that bitd, and now when you find an old boogie at Goodwill, you’re always gonna find the vintage stickers on the bottom 🤣
“implanting false memories” is one of the best ways to introduce ones self to a beautiful woman.
“Excuse me but…..Did we….?”
Palmers Island – where the McTavish and Bub country soul shot taken.
Next to the cane paddocks.
Enough herbicides on those veggies to wipe out the Amazon.
Don’t forget those facts John.

My memories are saturated with regret. I rarely access them on purpose.
The solution is simplicity itself. View Witzig’s photos, and create some new ones.
Sounds doable, I’ll watch Toal Recall tonight in preparation.
Better yet, read the original story. “We Can Remember it for You Wholesale” by Philip K. Dick.
No 1 regret? be honest.
If only.
Not getting help before my world crumbled.
Xox
It ain’t easy getting out of bed on the daily. Xx
It’s all regret. I even regret the the regret.
