Ol Keramas, Bali’s eastside jewel, has changed somewhat since me and a pal surfed it by ourselves, the wave revealed via a hand-drawn map from a surf photographer, back in the real early two thousands.
It wasn’t a total secret, not even close, but for a few days in 2003 we surfed it by ourselves, whiling away the days with reo contests, and races across the black sand to the single warung for dripping Coca-Colas pulled out of old buckets and supplemented with banana and honey jaffles.

Today Keramas features a lavish resort called Kommune that has a vast swimming pool and yoga lessons and delicious food and booze and luxury suites to ease the ache of trying to surf the celebrated right-hander with fifty manic locals.
In 2018 and 2019 it hosted a WSL event, the contest best remembered for Stephanie Gilmore’s sublime use of rails to score ten points and Kelly Slater’s promise to remove Filipe Toledo’s head from his shoulders.
The joint is under threat, howevs, after it was revealed in a Keramas Village meeting on Sunday that plans are afoot to install a marina and a floating restaurant.
The construction of a marina could “permanently destroy the surf break,” according to a statement from Komune Resort.
“Keramas is known as one of the best surfing locations in the world and has hosted three World Surf League events. This marina will permanently destroy the surf break, resulting in the loss of thousands of tourists each year and a devastating impact on the surfing industry in Bali.”
There ain’t a hell of a specifics on the marina and floating restaurant, including timelines, exact plans, or the status of approval from local authorities, so it’s hard to discern where the devil is, as they say.

Duh we build a surf orientated hotel , then invite proffesional surfing to hold events there , to put it on the wider worlds tourist maps and now complain because it’s getting commercialised, well far out Jethro the mules in cabbage patch again , who left the gate open.

I’m with you Maurice, the East Coast has a number of far superior gems on their day. Nikko’s was the jewel in the crown that has very sadly been lost to the devil’s hand of progress.
On a more positive note, the titty kisses and manual relief has progressed into something life changing! A buddy of mine took me to a place called Flame a couple years ago for a ‘Volcanoe Session’. Best $150 I’ve ever spent! Which I’m pleased to say was completely penetrative free and the girls assured me they were paid and looked after well. That’s as guilt free as it gets in my books.

last time I was at Keramas was in the death throes of a 20 year relationship. Screaming, crying. Confused children, Ex attempting to secretly bail home on the back of a moped while drunk at stupid o’clock..

I did that in Fiji with the crazy korean ex. No kids involved though.
Got it a few times in 89-92, quite a nice intermediate wave.

Ive sat at the end of Malibu pier swilling on Boba ball elixir watching Lard H surf through the pier.

There are a couple of waves close by that Blow Keramas……but I think they should put the floating resto off the Ulu’s race course……could then eat and not have to come over the reef…..has anyone heard that Ulu’s is really uncrowded with little or no development>>>

I wish I could remember more….as all the lefts I surfed one wave at…..were Padang etc……race tracks was a must as we didn’t have leggies then…but damn those psychedelics give ya unlimited energy….lotsa storie about being in comps and ???
Seems an inopportune position to put a floating anything given the amount of swell it cops.
Consider yourself incredibly lucky for those solo sessions. I had a few days there this winter and got a couple of surprisingly uncrowded sessions (less than 15 and no locals) only due to it being ‘off season’
The trick with Keramas is you have to stay there when it’s high tide in the morning. If it’s low in the morning it means every man and his dog will be on it later and it’s basically a shit show. Plus the wind gets up. It’s a great wave but too tight a lineup to share the crowd. As soon as the hot surfers hit the lineup you’re trying to get scraps and that’s not easy when all the set waves are taken. Even if you drift across a bit to the shoulder there’s not too many waves to be had because the hot surfers all make that first section.
I enjoyed it, and it’s wife & kids friendly, but it’s a cunt of a place when there is any sort of crowd on it. Not really sure if i’d go there again specifically to surf. I had more fun up at some of the rolling right handers further north.
Yeah I was with wife and kid also – scored four days there for free in early July on insurance due to daughter having an ear infection and not being able to fly. It was a great set up for the family and as I said pretty good with the crowds. Onshore only got up really strong one or two arvos and was otherwise clean or entirely manageable. Wouldn’t go anywhere near it on a proper busy day though. Basically a write off unless you’re a pro or Balinese.
Previous time I stayed there was peak season and yeah had better luck at cucukan (sp?) and KFCs.
Nice hotel but the wave was packed. Will not return. Floating restaurant is a laugh, would get annihilated
