Derek Rielly is a multi-hyphenate artist. Author, editor, creator, award-winning across all. The only issue with his constellation of talent is that he does not particularly enjoy, or lean into, self-promotion. Difficult, then, to find a spot to hear, or read, the literary giant reflecting upon his own life.
Jed Smith, one half of the world’s most popular surf podcast Ain’t That Swell, must have sensed the gaping Derek Rielly-sized hole in the space and took it upon himself to fill it with an episode of “Core Lords.
It is a brilliant 2-plus hours. The two discuss surf media history, meandering down memory lanes of Australian Surfing Life, Surf Europe, Waves and Stab. There is forays into the writing craft, Malcolm X, the current state of politics and the years when Jamie O’Brien was a rock star.
Smith is a deft interviewer, guiding the delightful conversation which, to borrow from Rielly himself, is truly essential.

Damn everytime I see that photo of Bob Hawke ( Once an Australian Icon/hero)……go back to Bob’s daughter being raped quite a few times by one of bob’s power brokers……when his daughter told him about being raped he replied ,” Mr Hawke then said: “You can’t, I can’t have any controversies right now. I enjoyed Dez’s book, all the while know that Hawke was, ultimately a shitcunt.

Bit of context here. Bob’s daughter Rosslyn, the junkie Hawke publicly wept over in 1984, made the claim in an affidavit as she tried to squeeze more cash out Hawke’s will after the old boy died in 2019.
Each of the four kids, one of ’em his stepson Louis, got 750 gees.
Rosslyn wanted 4.2 mill.
In the affidavit, Rosslyn declared she suffered from depression, anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder and agoraphobia, lived on a government pension of $427 per week and her home was a “cockroach infested” one-bedroom apartment. Its rent was paid, she wrote, by her son David.
Rosslyn’s claims included: $2.5 million to buy a house, $1,236,636.72 cash to cover living expenses for the rest of her life, $50,000 for furniture, $16,000 for household appliances, $4000 for linen and towels, $8600 for kitchen appliances and assorted other cooking items, $6000 for new clothes and shoes and $30,000 for dental implants.

Estate law favours children, even those who have been disinherited, if they can prove hardship. In Rosslyn’s case she claimed she still suffered from the unreported rape and had a reliance on the parent who’d died.
In the end, Hawke’s widow Blanche d’Alpuget, who is the subject of my next book out this year etc, gave Ross an extra fifty gees with a hundred k towards her costs.
While he was alive, Hawke had bought Rosslyn two houses in Canberra and after his ex-wife Hazel died she was bequeathed $300,000. Rosslyn claimed she gave the money to her youngest son David because she couldn’t accept her mother’s death.
In 1995, Hawke and Blanche appeared on 60 Minutes. They were paid a 200k appearance fee. Hawke, who was all but broke at the time, gave Rosslyn the cash.
