In what he’s claiming might be a world first, the drone pilot Carlos Guana has filmed the moment a speed boat collides with a Great White on a sunny summer afternoon in southern California, a region that has become a hotbed of juvenile Great Whites.
The video captures the moment of impact, showing the shark’s behaviour before, calm swimming,. and after, injured movement.
“These creatures are built for survival. But even they are vulnerable, because out here, in an ocean shared with people, they’re not immune to the fast pace of human activity,” says Guana.
“His fast-moving boat caught my attention as it approached. It was headed in the same direction that I had been filming the shark just minutes earlier.”
The result of the collision ain’t pretty and would’ve rattled the ice cubes in the boat passengers’ cocktail glasses and caused a couple of olives to be swallowed stick and all.
“A white gash cut across its body. A faint trail of blood spilled behind it. In that moment, the uncertainty turned into a reality. This shark had been struck. As it rose towards the surface, the injury became more visible. We get a rare, and closeup look, at the injury. This may be the first time a white shark injury has been observed and documented in the exact moment of impact.”
Guana has made a living out of filming Great Whites swimming in harmony with humans along the Californian coastline. So, what’s the prognosis?
It gonna live? It gonna die?
“It’s hard to say. But one thing is certain: the shark that was peacefully cruising just minutes earlier, will likely face a different reality in the days and weeks ahead.”

Seems odd to capture such an unlikely event with clear water, calm wind, sun shining, etc. straight into the thing. Weird.

What are the odds the vlogger could catch that moment. That boat was planning at speed and it sure has the look of micro adjustments made by captain to broad side the beast at last moment..

That would be evil, though unlikely, but I would bet the boats are using the drones to find the sharks. I didn’t watch with sound but what’s up with the inflatable that basically runs the shark over at the :39 mark? That boat clearly tried to go over the top of the shark and then returns.
People are strange
Its like a monster. Unfazed, feels no pain, relentless.
It will live but I’d be happier if it doesn’t survive.
A friend amd I were fishing Mako out behind Santa Cruz. After throwing back a couple of pups we double hook a 10ft blue. An hour later we get it to the boat and cut our leaders right on the hooks. That fish had a collar cut around it’s neck about 3″ deep all the way around it’s head with some heavy mono deep in the wound. It must have rolled on the last gear it was caught in and cinched then snapped it off.
Prehistoric MoFo was on to the next thing to eat. Like a honey badger.

However the actual collision appears completely insignificant for the boat, so it’s doubtful that a singular ice cube rattled in any cocktail glasses on board, heck they didn’t even slow down or alter course so the skipper probably just thought they skimmed some weed (if they felt any slight bump at all)…
That’s a bit sad really, no wonder they fucking hate us.
