Earlier in the month, terrible tragedy struck central Texas when torrents of rain swelled rivers leading to flash flooding that led to many deaths. 129 people confirmed dead and another over 170 unaccounted for. One of the most difficult stories was that of Camp Mystic, a classic summer sleep-away for young girls on the banks of the Guadalupe. 27 campers and counselors were swept away that fateful early morning, forever changing so many lives.
President Trump visited the region yesterday, touring the debris field, remarking, “All across the country Americans’ hearts are shattered. I had to be here as president.” He praised first responders and the Federal Emergency Management Agency, though he has signaled that he would like to see it shuttered, while clearly taken aback at the scope of the carnage saying, “I’ve seen a lot of bad ones. I’ve gone to a lot of hurricanes, a lot of tornadoes. I’ve never seen anything like this. This is a, this is a bad one. We just visited with incredible families that — I mean, look, they’ve been devastated. They lost their child or two children, and just hard to believe … a little narrow river that becomes a monster. And that’s what happened.”
When attempting to find the right analogy, something that would resonate, he added the gushing rivers were akin to “a giant, giant wave in the Pacific Ocean that the best surfers in the world would be afraid to surf.”
Surfers immediately pictured Teahupo’o, breaking off Tahiti’s emerald shore in the South Pacific. Its menacing energy, its deadly reputation and the best in the world, twice over, afraid to paddle.
But is the comparison apt?
Is a flash flood really like a wave, however scary?
In any case, at the end, Trump professed his belief in the Lone Star state to rise above, declaring, “The state of Texas, No. 1 they do it right and they’ve done it right for a long time. And it’s a very special place to me…” before flying home.
