Polarized times, these, with politics and rumors of politics infusing every bit of every conversation. It has become impossible to escape, there is no safe quarter, with even the august New York Times featuring how “guitar nerds and surf bros” are caught right up in the business.
The issue, in particular, not the endless war in Gaza, unilateral bombing of a staunch US ally or mobilization of military in left-leaning cities but rather those pesky tariffs, which are now taking a hard bite everywhere.
The aforementioned guitar nerds, according to the Times, are generally anti-tariff, as many hardwoods and components are grown/made overseas thereby spiking prices for wah-wah pedals etc. The surf bros, however are generally pro-tariff “if they would help get rid of cheap Asian-made soft-top surfboards and bring some business back home – a take delivered, of course, with a stoner giggle and friendly assurance that the speakers didn’t really know what they were talking about.”
But which surfer or surfers, do you imagine, were consulted?
Certainly not the world’s greatest, Kelly Slater, who produces Asian-made hard-tops under his Firewire label and does not feature a stoner giggle. Maybe San Clemente’s Matt Biolos, a proud right-leaning America first patriot, the the stoner giggle, though, not really part of his oeuvre.

Hamas does not equal Palestinians. Hamas are a group of extremist people from all over the Middle East who gathered in Palestine to fight Israel. They took over and used Palestine as cover. Not saying some Palestinans didn’t join in, but they Hamas is not ‘homegrown’ to them.

Speaking recently to the head of one of the big US based surf brands……they have to go on the road in the next couple of weeks with summer collections….but don’t know their actual cost price, as 99% of surf wear is made in Asia……just like every other USA Co……so what does success look like……..certainly not where TACO is leading the USA!
