Fijian groups say WSL has divided communities with gov-funded surf contest.
Fijian groups say WSL has divided communities with gov-funded surf contest.

WSL “destroyed delicate balance” between Fijian communities during Finals Day grand slam

"The Fiji Government is the treasurer of our hard earned tax paying money - we can't afford to pay millions to foreign companies to use our natural resources for their economic gains."

A light fury erupted on these pages one week ago when the World Surf League was slammed by indigenous Fijian groups on the eve of Finals Day for “exploiting Fiji’s ocean and people.”

Two Fijian-based groups, Fiji Surf Co and Bati Protector, turned on the mighty surf contest administrator, labelling it “exploitative.”

Click here for a little background although the central thesis was this, the WSL needs Fiji more than the Fijians need the slight economic kick from two weeks of full houses at Tavarua and Momi Bay.

“We don’t need to give you millions of our poor hard working tax payers money to market your own event so you can get rich off Fiji while the resource owners don’t get any money!”

Following the event, BeachGrit received a missive from these indigenous Fijian groups who said the government’s lavishing of cash on the billionaire-owned surf league had driven a wedge between various local groups.

“You know, after the WSL was gone it left many local villagers upset with ill-feeling between the governing body Fiji Surfing Association that got paid by WSL and resource owners who got nothing. This is why the WSL needs to be careful. The delicate balance they destroy between the communities when they control and show disrespect to the true people not foreigners like Tavarua or Marriott or local operators that monopolise their service not sharing with resource owners.

“WSL are users, exploiters and don’t care about the bad impacts that their business has here.”

A letter from Fiji Surf Co’s Ian Muller has since been circulated to media outlets in Fiji, which provides a window into how it all works in that pretty archipelago.

My name is Ian Ravouvou Muller ( Kini ) and I was born in Kiribati from my Dads side but my mother comes from Namoli Village in Lautoka – Mataqali : Ketenatukani / Tokatoka : Matalaqere. Our blood lineage comes from the Bati Warrior Chief Ravato who was one of the Guardian’s and Protector’s of most our coastline between Lautoka and Momi area. Tabanivono are the fishing rights owners (Qoliqoli) of Kurukuru mai Lagi wave ( Thundercloud / Cloudbreak) and are from 2 villages made up of Nabila and Momi.

Hundreds of years back, Ravato was requested by Nabila to help their small village to fight the wars from invaders. Ravato carried out his duty with other Bati Warriors to win the wars and therefore given land in Nabila village as guardians of the land and ocean. Today I carry on the Legacy of my forefather Bati War Chief Ravato to fight for our current generations of Fijians and the generations to come liberating them from the chains of injustice.

Back in July 2010 Fiji’s Surf Law was passed by our government and unveiled to the world for all to surf. We were instrumental in exposing the wrongs of corruption and opening this prime real estate by busting down the door of exclusive wave access from foreigners that would not even allow unrestricted access for locals to surf their our own waves!

We thought that the Surf Law would deter the monopoly and controlling ways of big corporate companies trying to muscle in on this Billion Dollar wave stadium. Obviously the clauses in the current Surf Law is not strong enough and im glad this policy reform is in present review and timely to look at the ways of protecting resource owners from disrespect, greed and blatant exploitation.

Don’t get me wrong – we want International ocean based competitions to come to Fiji but to play fair, accountable and transparent with our people especially. Don’t pull the drape over our Governments eyes saying how you will market our country or waves – Fiji stands strong in our values, beliefs and resources and we know our ocean in particular our reefs create some of the best waves on the planet – WSL needs Fiji more than Fiji needs WSL.

“Pay to Play” is all we ask. The poor villagers have not been paid fairly for this WSL competition – only last year 1 time payment for the usage of their reef. The village’s and wave have been taken advantage of by foreign exploitation for close to 50 years and ASP / WSL has been coming here for approx 20-25 years. WSL seeks millions $$ payment from our debt stricken govt ( 11 Billion Debt / 14 Billion GDP ) to surf our waves for their multi million dollar business.

It’s only right that if you are making commercial gains you pay for this precious ocean resource you are capitalising on.. The ocean is not that different to land in the Pacific Island context – abroad where the ocean belongs to everyone. In the Pacific our people have certain ownership rights like fishing rights for their food subsistence so this “ Yaubula “ is treasured.

Our world is in dire straights due to exploitation of this planet and the Pacific is more vulnerable than most of our world yet the Pacific is the least contributor to such devastation. We are destroying our planet and its important we try our best to restore it though PPP – Pay Play and Protect or Profit / People / Planet. Corporate companies coming to monetise our ocean needs to apply this RULE and if they dont we need to call them out to hold them to account – as well the Government if they fail in their duty to serve the people and their inherited resources.

One in Four people in Fiji are below the poverty line – Fijians don’t have millions to pay WSL to surf our waves. The Government is undervaluing our natural resources and painting a false picture that Fiji is rich – yes in natural resources but not in money. The stats speak for themselves – im just calling it how it is and should be bringing accountability, clarity and moral ethics to both WSL and the Government for not seeing this as it is. “ Injustice to the people by exposing the exploitation of natural resources of which our ancestors fought hard to protect and preserve for us today so that we can prosper and not be taken advantage of”

The Government is the treasurer of our hard earned tax paying money – we cant afford to pay millions to foreign companies to use our natural resources for their economic gains when some families are struggling with food, drugs, homelessness, poverty, environmental degradation, education and a range of other socio-economic issues currently facing Fiji. We have to correct this wrong and make it right otherwise we suffer from our own negligence and incompetence.

There are many facts I would like to share with you over the past 30yrs that we have been involved in Fijian Surfing – pioneering it from the beginning with a great deal of hardships and adversity coming from foreign companies that have stifled Fijians from growing. Imagine if the villages of Nabila and Momi were given fair opportunities and compensation for this unique wave resource to improve their livelihood from the very beginning?? The villages would be a thriving success business story.

Up-skilling their people and fellow Fijians to become entrepreneurs managing their own world class wave natural resource making this a beacon of hope to other Fijian villages. Fiji is precious and we are fortunate that our forefathers fought to protect close to 95% of our land and ocean for the people as custodians – the Government is the facilitator.

I advocate today what our ancestors fought for in the past and for those villages now that do not have a voice to fight for their dignity and the rights over their natural resources.

Im exercising my constitutional right to free speech and my divine right as a proud resource owner to expose the wrong and educate for the right.

A little poll: hands up who thinks the Fiji gov should continue to sponsor a CT event and holler if you think very bad idea.

Fiji has some serious gangster going on. Not something the WSL or the Fiji government dwell upon.

WSL: Grifting across the planet since 1976

I agree with Ian Muller on everything but want to point out what I think might be one mistake in his letter:

“It’s only right that if you are making commercial gains you pay for this precious ocean resource you are capitalizing on.”

Gonna go out on a limb and say the WSL is NOT making commercial gains on any of this.

Griff’s Dad, Mitch, Loves to swim and surf and just be in and around the ocean himself.

He Loves music and good food, gosh.

He enjoys sports, movies and documentaries.

Just a good human.

If the stats say tourism goes up next year and the event was apart of the year overall marketing strategy then for sure it was worth it. If an extra 10000 people buy a seat to fiji and on average spend 5k which ait hard these days then thaat 50M for the people.

Low wide stinkbug stance

And in other news, the world is not fair, the big countries push the little ones around and if you poke the bear don’t cry too loud if you get bitten.

This guy sounds like a wanker and I am getting “Jewish Hawaiian” vibes.

Derek Hynd's Missing Fins

More engaging to read than the BG finals write up, at least.

I think ( quite shallow mostly) that if we dig a little deeper and a little narrower we may uncover the speccific surf related organisations and even key individuals at each WSL stop that through handshake type back room deals take home a very tidy slice of the pie each year , you know like the dudes that have the contract to source sight security , the sparkies that get the contract to wire the joint up , the dudes that get the scaffolding and sight labour jobs , the local event sight coordinator and management , seem to have connections to local and state surfing associations all quite nepotistic , same people getting the same jobs and contracts year in year out since it all began.

That bloke went into business with a mate if mine, my mate put his life savings into it, 12 months after they started, Ian beat the shit out of him told him if he ever came back to Fiji he’d have his head, then kept my mates savings.
Edit, my mate is a bit of an imbecile..

Trev

He’s really looking at the wrong organisation to blame if he thinks this is anything close to what the Fiji Govt wastes money on. At least this has an ROI that can be measured by reach and engagement.
What Fiji Tourism pays to promote Fiji via the WSL is peanuts compared to the $20m+ budget allocated for Tourism marketing via all kinds of media, sales and trade shows.
Also, the Marriot Momi Bay is locally owned. The resort is 100% owned by the Fiji National Provident Fund (FNPF), a Fijian superannuation fund. Marriott International does not own the property; rather, it manages and brands the resort under its hotel portfolio.
These guys don’t know sh1t from shoe polish but what else can we expect from BG in publishing this nonsense.

I’ve the meet Bati warrior before. He does like the sound of his own voice

Chazz Michael Michaels

Can someone point me to the Englishman to blame?

Must be one somewhere.

Beef & Beer

Weellllll, that wouldn’t be an Englishman, it’d be a fellow Scot, in 1879.
Governor Sir Arthur Hamilton-Gordon, 1st Baron Stanmore…

@surfads

Without a doubt, Paul Evans

Beef & Beer

He’s right
Fiji doesn’t need Dirk Ziffs wife’s loss leading hobby business at all, though it’s obvious Dirks wife’s loss leading hobby business needs Fiji.
The wosl has NO impact on Fiji’s tourism, just like it has NO impact on West Australia etc.
The worldwide success of surf tourism is fully independent of any competitive ‘tournaments’ (professional OR amateur) and only a fool or swindler would say otherwise.
No actual proper traveling surfer, or holidaying post-covid learner, gives a flying fuck about such things when planning a surf trip (other than when NOT to be somewhere)…

Mike

That was an excruciating rant. Am i to believe this is an exact opposite of the Tahiti vibe?

JSC

If the WSL is paying the Fiji Surfing Association to hold The Finals in Fiji – and this fellow with the non-Fijian surname (?) is whining and complaining that “resource owners” like himself (of course) are not being paid their share of the revenue, isn’t his beef with the Fiji Surfing Association and NOT with the WSL?

While we are on the subject of “unfair treatment”, aren’t indigenous Fijians the same people that discriminate by law against ethnic Indians in Fiji, to the point where tens of thousands of ethnic Indians born in Fiji have left the country to live in Australia, New Zealand and the UK?

“At Fiji’s independence in 1970, ethnic Indians (Indo-Fijians) made up approximately 50.6% of the population, while in 2025, they constitute around 33% of the population according to a 2025 RNZ report, a significant decrease from previous decades” due to constitutionally mandated discrimination.

In South Africa, they called this system of constitutionally mandated discrimination “apartheid”, but sunny, happy Fiji seems to get a free pass. Why?

Beef & Beer

Fuuuuuck you really are a sack of shit, bringing his unchosen colonial (part) surname into the argument is just stupid.
If ya gonna be like that, why don’t ya just fuck off back to Ireland and die in a potato famine, you fuckin’ loser…

JSC

Indigenous ethnic Fijians themselves claim specific ethnic rights and privileges in Fiji – this fellow said his father is from Kiribati, his surname is haole, his mother is Fijian, so he is only half-Fijian – how does he qualify to be a spokesperson for Fijians?

“Indigenous Fijians (iTaukei) claim and are recognized to have special rights and privileges in Fiji, primarily concerning customary land ownership, which cannot be permanently alienated. The Constitution acknowledges these rights to land, cultural heritage, and customs, placing paramount importance on Fijian interests in these areas, a principle known as the “paramountcy of Fijian interests”.

Beef & Beer

Being HALF Fijian is still being Fijian ya fuckin’ clown, and it’s obvious that he’s educated enough to know that the Fijian government are out of line paying Dirk Ziff to hold his comp there, whereas the people in the local villages he’s sticking up for wouldn’t have a bloody clue about such things.

With your deadshit attitude I sure as fuck hope you limit any future surf exploitation and political opinions to your Irish homeland…

seppocunt

JSC’s out here saying a guy’s not Fijian enough ’cause of his last name — straight racist. Hilarious coming from the dude pimping their waves in coffee-table books while preaching “conservation.” Clown. And the cherry on top? He blocks anyone who calls him out, hiding like a pussy behind his own self-promoting propaganda.

Barrelled

At some point he will unblock you, just keep at it (him).

Michael Flatlately

Fascinating business, the coup malarkey though.

longtomssecondcuztwiceremoved

Seems nuts on the face of it for Fijians to pay a billionaire to run a comp at the best wave on Earth.

Mike

Not at this contest. The waves sucked!

longtomssecondcuztwiceremoved

I wouldn’t kick 6ft Cloudbreak out of bed if it farted, no matter how raggedy it looks.

You ever surfed it?

Derek Hynd's Missing Fins

Never been. Probably never will. What’s it like?

longtomssecondcuztwiceremoved

It’s a dream and a nightmare all rolled into one.

Derek Hynd's Missing Fins

Moves fast? Long hold down? Kaleidoscope colors? Lip throws wide?

deeks

I saw mushroom corals zoom past mmy face at speed. Sought of scares the fuck out of you

Barrelled

It breathes unlike any wave you have ever seen. Big playing field, far from Indo style perfection.

Capt Sensible

Every stop its the same , someone other than the WSL fronts up the cash and the WSL just takes its cut. What a scam wish I had thought it up.

Ramathorn

Surely there’s Chinese investment $ they could fund it with
