US surf star Keith Malloy reveals how he came to have a front seat to a gruesome fatal shark attack.
The ultra-masculine bodysurfing aficionado and middle brother of the Central Californian family famous for their purist behaviour, Keith Malloy, has revealed how he came to have a front seat to a gruesome fatal shark attack at New Zealand’s Muriwai Beach.
Malloy, roughly fifty-ish, recalled the 2013 attack in an interview on the Lay It On podcast, hosted by the goofy American chef Brad Leone, famous for his work with fermentation in cooking, like, making miso, kombucha etc.
Malloy recalls,
We went over to New Zealand. We got a cool little house down by the beach. So we get there, we go straight to the ocean, and there’s nobody on the beach. We all jump in this water, swim around for half an hour. Water’s just wonderful. And this guy comes down.
“He was the only other person on the beach. So we walked off the beach. He swam out. Right where we were swimming.
“Dude, he got chomped.
“He died. I was the last guy to talk to him ever, and we were in the water right where he swam out. We got back up into the parking lot. We just started hearing sirens. Let’s run down to the beach and see what’s going on. Maybe we can help.
And we see these cops get in the lifeguard boat and go out with their machine guns. They’re shooting at the shark with the body in its mouth, swimming around 100 yards out to sea. And the shark actually let go of the body, and they retrieved it and brought it back here.”
The man was the well-known award-winning filmmaker and creative Adam Strange, who was forty-six, and described by friends and family as a “glorious and great father, husband, and friend”.

I don’t think revisiting this, first by Keith and his buddy and now here, is really that cool. It was a pretty traumatic time for that community, and this kind of thing reopens an old wound for people from Muriwai reading it.

He must’ve been there with Wassel, who spoke about being on the rocks as that attack was going down during a WSL broady. I read an article in a local fishing mag that there was a massive boil-up going down that day and the salty crew on the rocks were hauling it in. Then Adam appeared and swam right over the top of it. There’ll be one, or a few of that bunch who dumped the fatal load of chum. That said, ocean swimming – solo – around a headland…

I’m baffled by both these quotes. First one seems to reference a local kid who killed himself due to seeing the attack? But maybe not. Second one seems to reference some mystery Kiwi artist who is a BG regular. Maybe Negs?

Going back to those 11 year old articles reminds me why i was drawn here in the first place.
