“It's very, very sad but at this stage of life, I have decided it's time."
Almost a decade ago, I wrote a little piece about the ancient, like, just turned eighty, surfer Kev Merifield, a friend of nineties star Taj Burrow.
“Surfing at 80 has to be every surfer’s goal,” seventeen-timer runner-up to the world title Taj Burrow said at the time. “Kev is a legend and he’s right — it’s all about getting out there, getting wet and talking shit with your boys.”
Despite having to ride prone due to a loss of equilibrium brought on by an ear injury, Kevin Merifield wasn’t afraid to hit decent-sized Margaret River for a three-hour session.
“That view is part of the reason that’s kept me going for so long,” Merifield said in a story by the fabulous sometime BeachGrit writer Anthony Pancia. “You come around the corner on a day like today and catch your first glimpse of those magnificent lines of waves. Your heart just starts racing. There’s nothing quite like it.”
How did he keep backing it up, even at such an advanced age?
Reflections on the Life of an Aged Surfer
“Obviously, you’ve also got to try and look after the old body and keep it moving,” he said.
Well, all good things come to an end, and some later than others, and Kev has finally quit the game in his eighty-seventh year.
“It’s very, very sad but at this stage of life, I have decided it’s time,” Kev told the state press.
“I have a bit of a heart condition and having trouble with being out of breath all the time, which is not a good recipe for being out in the surf, so unfortunately time is up.”
Kev’s eighty-seven ain’t the oldest sign-off date? You remember good ol Doc Paskowitz?
Dorian “Doc” Paskowitz surfed until he was 93; a man who had developed the most common-sense guide to eating (“Pinch an inch of fat anywhere on your body and you’re overweight”) and living (“Don’t screw another man’s wife!”).
Damm, ol Doc, the Russian Jew, who went to Stanford, became a doctor, threw it all in to chase surf, introduce surfing to Israel (and later to the Palestinians of Gaza) rear children, surf up and down the American coastlines with nine kids in a 21-foot van, following his philosophy that wisdom comes not from formal education but experience, write books, teach at community college, inspire the hell out of surfers like Rob Machado and Kelly Slater and, still, in his nineties, surf the waves of Hawaii’s South Shore, albeit on his knees after his hinges gave out.
A documentary of his life was made called Surfwise and, even if he comes across as a little tyrannical, maybe crazy, the stories of him and his wife fucking in the van while the kids blocked their ears and living on gruel and beans and surfing their lives away, is an example of life as an experiment, as a Great Dream.
Surf forever? Maybe.
You ever wonder what’s going to be your sign-off age? The day when being a surfer gets too hard physically, when the bones ache too much or your seized hips ruin any mobility?
What’s it it going to be? Sixty? Seventy? Eighty?
I know a few old coots, most in their sixties, one a little over seventy, still dragging ’emselves into the water.
The impressive thing is, none of ’em ride longboards even if it would mean more waves and a better experience.
Instead, they persist with twin-fins and slightly thicker seven-o’s. It’s an impressive middle-finger jammed in the face of the whole surf-is-youth notion.
Check out Tony Roberts, sixty-ish.
Then you got this ol Sano Seiichi. He was eighty when he started. Ten years on, he’s still swishing around.
You?
How long are you going to persist with this life as a surfer? What will it take for you to hang up the boots? What’s the deal breaker?
Or are you going to ride this thing into the grave, heart attack in the Ments or similar, born a surfer die a surfer?
Mike Ho ripping still.
Almost seventy! He’s a keeper!
I recommend 35
Eternally thankful I gave up caring about surfing long before my body will pull the plug for me.
Its the only thing I really still love to do. Choose my windows. Avoid the high profile spots after a long flat spell and good weather or first good west swell of the winter. Find the nooks and crannies. Be happy with less waves. Rain, overcast, wind, south wind on the points, post rain im out there. Try to avoid crowded sessions with specific pests out where I know I won’t have any fun.
Exactly. My one sort of exception is a spot I think you know well that I fell in love with after 25 years of surfing mainly east coast beach breaks … just try to hit it really early before sun up, or at the front or back end of swell windows when the crowd isn’t totally on it — and be very patient, ha ha
Pretty soon your kid or kids will laugh at you for being old and soft, so get out there while you still can!
Same here with skiing a similar priority. I was just talking to my oldest over lunch about the rain that is killing the likelihood of him surfing tomorrow. I need a few more days before winter really sets in as 64 degrees still feels good in a 3/2…
I used to love snowboarding but its just as crowded as the surf now. And expensive AF. I’ll go for the novelty if it comes up but not searching it out anymore.
Very good strategy. Onshore, big/tiny, gloomy, the new bluebird.
Yeah that was me on meth
Ol’ Gil will be taking surfing back up in precisely 4 days upon arrival in the tropics. Know when to hold em, know when to fold em.
I’ve seen some footage of Occy and Tom Carroll lately that makes me think I must be surfing like a 87 year old kneeboarder.
And Nick, a few summer’s short of seventy, surfing real good.
Felipe Pomar is doing it like this:
https://www.surftill100.com/felipepomar
The rope will get me long before I’ll be to unfit to surf.
Don’t you dare I’ve had to cut someone down. Albeit too late. No good for anyone. Watch more Norman gunston
Sounds like Nicholas.
There is no finish…no agonizing. You’re gonna live forever buddy. You’ll be back frothing and stronger than ever. Not by what..by Who.
Harry? Darrel? maybe even Sloth might be over 65 now? Larry, maybe it was Larry?
Sloth over 60 for sure.
Sloth inexplicably gave me a wave at 6’ Moneytree’s I’ll never forget.,a gem of a person.
And he would strut around the camp wearing these hideous green socks rambling about his team the Roosters. One of the highlights of my surfing life.
before I did my first trip there someone told me Sloth was working in town here and to go see him.
fuk, he gave me so much golden wisdom about working the crowds and the reef.
Legend
Honestly never given it a thought but probably when I dont enjoy it anymore, or me rig gives up after years as a tradie. I gave up surfing the Superwank about ten years ago cuz I was having too many shit, angry surfs rather than good ones and now only head up to surf Kirra when it gets solid. Still surf heaps as I’m lucky to live in paradise surrounded by sick beachies and warm water. Had a really good young surfer from here just suddenly die instantly in front of his misses about 10 years ago and from then on I have just taken every day as it comes. He was 29, never really drank or partied or smoke and just dropped dead from a brain annerysum. Taken every day as it comes from then on
Keep going hard you Chunky cunt.
It is the only way to keep going to get through the old ages.
Nobody misses all the Scumbags and Choppy loser cunts in the lineup throwing vitriol.
I’ll be stoked if the ocean is still free to enjoy, or not totally acidic by the time I am even 60 mate the way things are going….
Go get rinsed TODAY
How are ya brother? Miss our chats and the other fellas. Still no news from c gerk so just another full of shit Seppo cunt ay haha. Turning 50 on Tuesday so having a big barbie sarv with mates and family so should be a good bit of debauchery going on. Bit of a wig out turning the big 5 0 but with some of the dumb shit I’ve done over the years just happy to still be alive haha. Choppy Would Go yeeeeeeeeeeeeeeew
I have read many of your comments mate, and you are exactly the same legendary cunt.
Congratulations and stoked to see you haven’t been banned yet.
I appreciate your honest and open comments mate.
Saying what is REALLY on your mind is almost a thing of the past, these days (I know you have heavily restrained yourself in this new environment, hahah).
Have a great Birthday you fossil
Too bad the CT traded the Superwank for the Supertank, er Slavepool
How fucked is the slavepool, I hate the joint. A swimming pool should never be on the tour. They have the Snapper event in May which is really late in the season for here but hopefully Huey sends us the goods
I ain’t one for tank contests, but the Daddy Dhabi format worked, I think, There was a measure of anticipation etc.
losing the leaderboard- bad.
Looming 😕
The key is not to write or talk about it.
who would be left to comment then Bexy?
Attention whores, theres plenty of them.
present company excluded of course.
Do you know Coco, ?swellnet.
sorry mate?
A chick on big brother rekons she works for swellnet
Isn’t that why we frequent BG? Everything is surf adjacent except of course for surfing…
Larry McGraw. Here’s a tip: challenge yourself, but not too much.
Old buddy was in town the other day.
70 years old, spirit of an 18 year old grom.
Shaped my first new custom as a kid.
Still riding a shortboard and getting some jams in. Super inspiring as I am over it and just default to a longboard out of spite.
Keep going till you can’t anymore!
some of the old boys at G-land still go pretty good.
Finding chip shots is the key, I think.
And judicious use of the boat.
Staying on top of the daily Bintang intake.
Being a bitter old man is what will do me in, not the physical.
Bitterness is like the spongiest electric blanket on a cold morning. So comfortable to wear.
You describe me oh so well!
