Something in that desert water...
As you certainly did not know, but will be very glad you do now, the World Surf League held its Abu Dhabi Longboard Classic, days ago, and nothing says “classic” like longboarding in a petro-kingdom wave pool.
According to the WSL, bacchanal featured “three days of world-class surfing, great food, drinks, live music and family-friendly fun.”
Most importantly a contest, though, which was won by the Frenchman Edouard Delpero, who leapt from 9th to first on the rankings.
An inside source has declared that Depero “… is well known in the long board community for hating traditional, long boarding , he just does enough to pretend he can ride it in a traditional manner, he’s just been waiting for enough years to have passed since (former commissioner and traditionalist) Devon Howard left with hopes that the judges will start scoring shortboard performance surfing again…
He also allegedly dislikes Joel Tudor.
The best part of the win, aside from a hopeful rebirth of high-performance longboarding, is Delpero’s celebration.
It is difficult to describe and the viewer is taken on a rollercoaster of wild emotion.

He’s as much of a pleasure to surf with as the clip suggests.
the barely contained rage, contrasted against gently and neatly placing the thoroughly destroyed fragile plastic cup is an unwanted window into the tortured soul of the modern longboarder.
I’m seemingly in the minority here but he ticks a couple of boxes for me. He doesn’t like Joel Tudor and isn’t a fan of the whole retro hipster scene of longboarding.
He’s French. He”s also a long boarder so my surprise is minimal at best
