It is no secret that the United States of America is, currently, divided. The government entering its second week of shutdown, right blaming left, left blaming right. The population bunkered in intractable beliefs. The right cheering on strongman Donald Trump as he blasts through bureaucracies, amassing much power. The left furious at this turn toward autocracy but, thus far, mostly getting rolled right over.
What could help the perpetual retreat? What could turn the tide against a possible future dictatorship?

The D.C. based magazine has just, yesterday, dropped a piece from noted pundit David Brooks. Self-described as a “moderate Republican,” the writer-thinker declares that America needs a mass movement – now, adding, “Without one, America may sink into autocracy for decades.”
He opens by discussing various other uprisings against power grabs in other countries around the world before pivoting back home.
For the United States, the question of the decade is: Why hasn’t a resistance movement materialized here? The second Trump administration has flouted court decisions in a third of all rulings against it, according to The Washington Post. It operates as a national extortion racket, using federal power to control the inner workings of universities, law firms, and corporations. It has thoroughly politicized the Justice Department, launching a series of partisan investigations against its political foes. It has turned ICE into a massive paramilitary organization with apparently unconstrained powers. It has treated the Constitution with disdain, assaulted democratic norms and diminished democratic freedoms, and put military vehicles and soldiers on the streets of the capital. It embraces the optics of fascism, and flaunts its autocratic aspirations.

In it, a surfer shredding what appears to be an asymmetrical mid-length on a bigger day at Cyclops in Western Australia. Unlike other hellmen who take on that beast, this particular brave fellow is not racing for the shoulder but aiming for the lip all whilst shielding himself from the Lucky Country’s unfiltered sun with an extremely large bucket hat.

If I ever take any of this rhetoric directed at Trump or the same rhetoric from the far right directed at Biden seriously, I’ll create a chart of the actual economic and democracy diminishing harm each administration’s actions have inflicted upon Americans. My guess is that while the actions and non-actions will differ, the results will be rather equal and punitive. Next, will either side take off their blinders long enough to see what is really happening to our way of life due to the harm politicians on both side of the aisle are inflicting upon the US?
