A little less happy news today after it was revealed Indian social media users have bombarded Coffey with death threats and calls for her deportation after a lighthearted video she posted online was misconstrued as an act of desecration at a revered site in India — a country she has never visited.

Ellie-Jean Coffey, a 30-year-old former competitive surfer from the Gold Coast, shared the clip on Instagram earlier this month, capturing a moment of impromptu relief during a boating expedition through Western Australia’s remote Kimberley region.

In the footage, Coffey is seen squatting on the side of a small vessel with a crocodile gliding perilously close by.

“A croc almost got me,” she captioned the post, which was filmed by a companion during a nine-month journey that traced a serpentine path from the New South Wales-Queensland border to Broome on the northwestern coast.

The video quickly spiralled into an international furour.

Reposted on Indian social media accounts, it was falsely presented as evidence of Coffey defecating into a sacred lake near Udaipur, a picturesque city in Rajasthan known for its storied lakes and Hindu pilgrimage sites.

One prominent Instagram account, Swadesiofficial, amplified the error with a caption reading, “American tourist seen pooping from boat into lake in Udaipur!” alongside the provocative query: “Can she be deported?”

The post ignited a torrent of outrage among viewers, who decried the alleged affront to cultural sanctity.

“Civic sense died here,” one commenter fumed.

Others invoked hypocrisy and demanded swift justice: “Imagine if an Indian does the same thing abroad”; “Deport back to Europe”; “You’re classless.”

Calls escalated to suggestions of arrest, crippling fines and even global media scrutiny from outlets like CNN and the BBC.

Coffey, who has never been to India, was stunned by the vitriol.

“I’m setting the record straight: I’m Australian; this is the Aussie outback; IT WAS NOT IN INDIA,” she wrote in a corrective caption.

In an interview with News Corp, she described the episode as a stark illustration of digital misinformation’s reach.

“I would just never do that,” she said of the fabricated accusation. “It’s so wild how fast a lie can spread online. I can’t believe it spun out of control like that.”

The backlash, she added, included harrowing threats on her life, prompting her to ignore early skeptical queries until the deluge became untenable.

“I’ve had people telling me I should be deported from India — and I’ve never even been there.”

For Coffey, the incident evokes echoes of a career already shadowed by trauma. Coffey stepped away from pro surfing after enduring years of mental and physical abuse from influential figures in the sport.

“At first I thought and believed I was the luckiest girl in the world to be living such a life,” she recounted at the time, “and not long after that, the darker side of the surfing industry soon revealed itself to me, and it was terrifying.”

Several non-Indian commenters were quick to point out the irony,
