"Noah Beschen has become the symbol of an era when surfing transcends the boundaries of sport."
Time flies, they say, when you’re having fun. It seems as if it were only yesterday that we were watching a young ripper burst out of San Clemente, California, changing what we thought possible. Shane Beschen was stylish, fierce, progressive. His bouts versus Kelly Slater culturally important. The lanky blonde represented something new and thrilling.
Rad.
Well, it was not, in fact, only yesterday but rather some two decades ago and, now, Beschen’s son Noah is stealing hearts and captivating minds.
The 24-year-old has wildly impressed, packing large tubes on the North Shore and in Mexico while also flying and flipping at wave tub events. Swiss watchmaker Swatch took notice and recently signed the model-handsome young man to the team with a statement reading, “(Beschhen) speaks of ‘free movement’ and ‘personal style’ rather than scores or podiums. This philosophy appeals to a generation of riders for whom technique only makes sense if it’s accompanied by emotion. Swatch capitalizes on this vision to reinforce its lifestyle and creative positioning.”
The Paris Select Book added, “Noah Beschen has become the symbol of an era when surfing transcends the boundaries of sport. His partnership with Swatch is seen as a visionary collaboration: not to freeze performance, but to make it a moving work. Insiders believe he could soon be taking part in new multi-sport event formats in Europe, and even in Paris, according to our sources.
Very cool.
But do you remember the Swatch craze of the late 80s? Oh man, I remember being ultra-envious of the cool boys in my junior high school who were fortunate enough to have one, or sometimes two, Swatches. Bright, colorful, a li’l rebellious.

Certainly not your grandfather’s watch.
The Swatch Guard, which came out later, nearly blew my mind with its awesome and I would go to bed, each night, dreaming fluorescent plastic dreams.

I eventually got a Swatch, likely for Christmas, and, though I can’t recall specific details, I’m certain my life drastically improved.
I also made a significant mistake around this time. My birthday was coming up, maybe 12th, and skateboarding was au courant with Mike Gonzales, Christian Hosoi, Steve Caballero etc. giving ‘er hell. I was presented with two options for potential gift: a Vision Gator or a fake K-Mart thing in a box with griptape already applied and trucks pre-attached.
It was called “The Dominator.”
I chose “The Dominator” because I thought the black and white checkerboard deck was a superior graphic and, thus, my skateboarding skill was forever stymied.
Congratulations to Noah Beschen.
Ahh the Veriflex skateboard from toys r us. I had one too.
not to nerd out on you all, but the backstory of how swatches saved the Swiss watch industry following the quartz crisis is pretty interesting , in a late 20th century / stories of the threat of techno obsolescence kind of way. Here’s the shorthand version: https://fortune.com/europe/2025/02/26/swatch-elite-swiss-watch-industry-omega-longines/
And now people who care about these things spit on quartz movements , which is all well and good , but if the predecessors now known as the swatch group hadn’t embraced it we’d all be wearing seikos and Casios (not that those are bad options)

Dude has it going on.
Seemed disappeared until uber not, would have been erotic if Derek had penned this.
Is “penning” a gay thing? Man, full circle.

Swatchs were fucking cool, epitome of late 80s/90s. Had a few on a bootleg velcro strap. Too bad the tick tick ticking did my head in. Couldn’t sleep with it.
I thought the dominator was a dildo that you strap to your chin.
A little research turned up this. The description says…’The Dominator is not for the faint hearted, he is a master with a true mission’. Grip tape not included.
Clappy Hamper is gonna have a problem with this post.
What about now? 🤔
his arousal infers so much, not sure the edit registers, can’t be unseen.
you’re kind of tripping me out talking about my “arousal”.
you are fagala?
I think I missed it…..but now the only thing I see is Kamala Harris having a it of fun. damn Rorschach test.

Finally broke my points drought on the weekend.
15 mins of the only flat spell all day, then took a tiny blip for a single point, only to get caught inside when the only set of the heat appeared out of nowhere with about 3 minutes to go.
The surf then resumed normal service as soon as the hooter went.
I’m accepting offers for sponsorship.
Please discuss with Chas’ wife who will likely be calling me any day to try to get me on her books.
Thought at first I read Benetton..
I’m sure Chad wore that crap too.
To inclusive! He was raised uber Christian, his mom probably made his clothes..
Sears catalog! But I also got to pick out tees from surf shops when we came to California. Pirate Surf was a favorite.
Pre or Post “Toughskins”era.. You sure not Spiegel?
“This philosophy appeals to a generation of riders for whom technique only makes sense if it’s accompanied by emotion.”……and a wheelbarrow full of cash.
Swatch colors and designs matched my boards and fluro shorts brilliantly…but I still preferred my Submariner.
Remember Benetton and Coogi?
Must have been a tough choice between the $30 kook band or the $15,000 piece. Mokes would probably beat your ass either way.
submariners in the 80s were like $1500, way cheaper than a Macintosh or Apple III !!
So was just about everything else. First car was $3200, today that same vehicle would sell for $32,000+.
two things:
Rolex Sub was around $1,500-$2k in the days when swatch was the craze. my more expensive day-date Presidential was a whopping $3k. I had some pretty nice watches bitd, even a Piaget, which was the iconic “it” watch of the 80’s.
never had a problem with “Mokes” past 7th grade, and I only acquired the fine watches when I moved to California. two of them were gifts.
The idea that non-endemic brands were “uncool” was actually a conspiracy from big boardshort to undercut the endorsement income of proletarian working class professional surfers like Slater and Shane Dorian.
But maybe it’s just that Swatches and Mossimo were always pretty lame in the surfing world.
all the hot girls wore them , so there was that
Bettah Swatch out Surf world! If you Noah what I mean!
Had a clear one once. Just so happens that the Reggae Sunsplash over on Catalina Island was using a clear plastic band as the VIP pass. Spun that watch face around my wrist and bingo, I was back stage blowing blunts with Steel Pulse. Loved that watch.
Those clear ones where you could see mechanical workings were ultra.
…paired up with some Flojos, Oakley Factory Pilots, and Corderouy Billabong jacket. Fuck yeah! Crank up the INXS!
Big fat ci-gar in a flashy car?
Did you grow up in Coos Bay too?
Chant a Psalm today.
Woulda been cooler if you were blowing steel pulse
Reminds me of when I had to choose between the MR twinnie and an odd red G&S round pin twinnie that I thought was less corporate or something? Endless regret
I would have pictured you as more of a Per Welinder fan-boy as opposed to Mike Gonzales, Christian Hosoi, Steve Caballero. “The Dominator” ownership explains the Swatch infatuation.
Do they make any watches for hetero men?
