A gloom has descended upon professional surfing’s vaunted Challenger Series today after the big-wave star Pedro “Scooby” Vianna, who is also a model and, if the allegations of an Instagram influencer are to be believed, lover of soccer ace Neymar Jr, wonderful if only they were true, struck out at the World Surf League over what he claims is a systemic racism.
With Instagram as his soap box, Pedro Scooby made the accusation of racial bias in WSL Challenger Series judging at Saquarema, where Black athlete Weslley Dantas was eliminated after waves Scooby deemed superior yet scored nearly identically to Australian George Pittar’s (5.73 vs. 5.67).
Posted amid nine Brazilian male eliminations on October 12, 2025, during the season’s final Challenger stop — key for 2026 World Tour spots — the controversy highlights ongoing tensions in a sport historically dominated by the damn Whites.

People think it’s only in the top division where the judges play favorites; they choose who they want to advance in the heats. I’m going to make sure to film the two waves that got the same scores, one from George Pittar and the other from Weslley Dantas.
“George Pittar’s wave, he surfed well, did a nice turn inside, the wave died, did another turn and a hit that wasn’t much and forced his way back. Weslley’s wave, he carved, did a tail slide on the moon, an insane cutback. Did another tail slide, did two cutbacks without moving the board. The same score for both? It’s outrageous, there’s no way those two waves can get the same score, it’s impossible.”
The sport’s judging has long been an issue, as it always will, although the noise made by Brazilian world champs Gabriel Medina, Filipe Toledo and Italo Ferreira, and various death threats from Brazilian surf fans, has long brought the issue into relief.
That outburst followed a long proud line of Brazilians complaining about losing, notably in El Salvador and at Surf Ranch.

Poor old Pedro has obviously never read the judging criteria, flat tail slides are old school, deep gouging rail carves at speed are way superior along with vertical attacks. Less is more nowadays, try to fit in more turns hasn’t been popular with the judges for years. Wesley has from memory always scored better with the judges on his forehand.

I watched and judged the heat then out of interest. My result came out the same as the WSL judges with Dantas a closer 3rd.
Pittar is a gangly poor mans Ethan Ewing and I actually like Dantas’s animal style of surfing better so I guess this result call makes me a racist also. Damn, really didn’t want to join the KKK, but I guess the numbers are in.
Pedro cherry picked the waves shown too, not a true reflection of the waves ridden by the surfers in question.
I think WSL judges, overall, pretty damn impressive.

They’re mostly pretty good. Always going to be some calls that are outright wrong or the punters don’t agree with when it comes down to only a handful of people picking the results under pressure.
Pedro does have some impressive tear ducts though.
