Liver damage and death incoming.
Santa Cruz surfers, many of whom have a taste for ‘shrooms, are being warned by the state against going off into the woods and foraging their own. At issue, a current outbreak of ‘shroom poisoning that has killed one person and severely damaged the livers of several others.
California’s poison control system has, thus far, identified 21 cases of amatoxin poisoning, likely the result of the dreaded death cap ‘shroom.
Erica Pan, director of the California Department of Public Health, declared, “Death cap mushrooms contain potentially deadly toxins that can lead to liver failure. Because the death cap can easily be mistaken for edible safe mushrooms, we advise the public not to forage for wild mushrooms at all during this high-risk season.”
Wet weather, the sort that descends upon Northern California this time of year, allegedly fuels death cap ‘shroom growth. Recent poisonings occurred near Santa Cruz, in Monterey, where some residents, maybe surfers, became sick after eating some in a local park.
The “destroying angel” ‘shroom is also causing problems.
Poisoning symptoms include stomach cramps, nausea, diarrhea and vomiting within 24-hours. Even though the ‘shroom eater might feel better after that, the poison continues to lash the liver in an unchill way.
In other news, Jack Johnson was on Jimmy Kimmel Live, recently, and, according to Surfer Magazine, has “ambitious” plans for 2026 which include an upcoming documentary titled Surfmusic and subsequent tour. Surfer’s editor Jake Howard penned, “Seeing Jack play in Laguna last month with a crew of his homies, including Kelly Slater, Rob Machado, Donavon Frankenreiter, and G Love, he delivered a flowing, groove-infused set of classics and new songs alike. It’s been a minute since Jack’s stepped out on stage so boldly and it looks like he’s back where he belongs, as comfortable playing and singing in front of thousands as he is a four- to six-foot day at Haleiwa. It’s good to have him back.”

Death cap mushrooms in Santa Cruz look nearly identical to a very good tasting mushroom you can forgage in south east Asia and every time this happened up there it’s a family where multiple members come in sick.

I built a huge outside area for Mr Johnson about 12 years ago on his sprawling property at Broken Head which included a pool, numerous pergola roofs and decks,a built in brick barbie, a fire pit and various sitting arrangements. I found him wonderful company and me and me best mate enjoyed various surfs with him before and after work and he even took one of me company hats and sent me footage of him wearing it at one of his concerts bless him. I have still never played one of his songs though, just aint my jam.
We even had the old bald cunt come and stay with him while we were there and I can only describe him as….ummm how do I say this politely….ummm very short, uninspiring and not at all friendly as is the way down here. A funny thing is the day he arrived and I noticed him I was working with the excavator driver who was a complete bogan, rev head from the hinterland and I said to him ah theres Kelly Slater. Without missing a beat or taking a squizz he just goes “who’s she?” Hahaha what a fucking sick cunt ay
I have spent some time around Jack on the north shore and out in Hana for my brother in-laws wedding, he is a wonderful person. Easy to hang around, kind to strangers, lovely to his family, and still surf great. But his music is a kind of generic that hurts my soul. If Jack himself is sitting at my camp fire with his guitar singing his songs I think it would feel authentic and enjoyable. But when I hear one of his songs coming out of a speaker I feel like fighting someone. R. Kelly has been lying about his hight and his grooming for ages.
