Why is the dingo executed, the kangaroo culled and the bull shark venerated?
Last week, y’might’ve heard, the body of Canadian backpacker Piper James was discovered on 75 Mile Beach on K’gari (previously called Fraser Island) around six thirts in the morn, and surrounded by a pack of growling dingoes.
The dingo is Australia’s iconic wild dog, middling size, lean, built for endurance and speed and with a ginger coast. Friendly looking, especially the pups, but don’t touch etc.
K’gari hosts one of Australia’s purest remaining dingo populations—around 200–300 individuals—and all protected as a native species under Queensland law.
Dingoes have lived there for thousands of years and play a key ecological role as apex predators.
However, heavy human presence, half-a-mill tourists hit the island every year, has led to significant habituation. And dingoes have lost that natural fear of people due to illegal feeding and scraps left by campers.
The result? Bold, opportunistic behaviour: approaching people, scavenging campsites, stealing food, and occasionally aggressive interactions like growling, nipping, or biting.
In 2001, a nine-year-old boy, lil Clinton Cage, was mauled to death by dingoes.
A coroner’s autopsy, released days after Piper James body was discovered, found physical evidence consistent with drowning as the most likely cause of death, supported by fluid in the lungs.
However, and this is important, the injuries included pre-mortem dingo bite marks, indicating bites occurred while she was alive, alongside extensive post-mortem bites. Authorities have not ruled out the possibility that dingo aggression prompted her to enter the water, contributing to the drowning.
So the Queensland government sent its rangers who put bullets into the brains of six of the dingoes. Humanely euthanised, as they say.
That decision, quick, and decisively brutal, has led Australians, who evacuated beaches en masse after six bull shark attacks, including the death of a 12-year-old, a surfer who had a leg amputated and vision of a half-ton bull shark being pulled out of the water next to a popular Sydney Harbour beach, to question the hypocrisy of our wildlife policies.

I have suggested a cull in inshore bullsharks below this very line. The half educated retoric it recieved was interesting. Same folk no doubt eating the lower trophic ocean catch with abandance advocating for the protwction of the upper as if by saving the apex predator you are somehow returning balance to the fished out waters they inhabit.
The whole apex predator keeping numbers in check thing loses steam when there is a bigger apex predator(us) already doing that in large numbers.
If anything it increases pressure on the lower end of the chain.
Bring back Vic Hislop. He and Joel Nancarrow, and other shark fishermen, should be employed to hunt and kill sharks in whatever area every time there is an attack. none of us know what was said or what happened in the scrum, but what we do know is Pretti attempted to prevent a Federal Law Enforcement Officer from making a legal arrest and when the officer then attempted to arrest him, he violently resisted. Both are crimes.
Video is now revealing that as an officer was attempting to disarm Pretti, Pretti’s Sig 320 mistakenly fired (mistaken fire is common with that gun). At that point another officer who was not in view of the officer that disarmed Pretti; opened fire. I also said my heart was broken about this event.
It is a truly sad situation…..but one that would not have occurred if Pretti had notified officers that the was armed and had a permit, and that he presented no threat to officers, as is required by carry laws when approaching or engaging with Law Enforcement.
ICE is a Federal Law Enforcement agency, same as U.S. Marshals or FBI.
When you are ordered to the ground, you obey, when you are being told you are being arrested, you obey and do not resist. when you are ordered to drop or hand over your weapon, you obey.
I don’t know how many guns you own, but gun owners have a responsibility. Personally, I have no idea why Pretti showed up at an ICE arrest with a loaded weapon and extra magazines. his Ex wife and friends all said, they had never seen Pretti carry his pistol. He had every right to carry the pistol, but as I said, when confronted he had a duty to notify officers that he was armed and provide his permit and disarm if requested.
did the officers overreact? maybe. but, let me ask you…if you saw an armed Law Enforcement Officer attempting to make an arrest, would you attempt to get in between the officer and the criminal, push the officer, then fight with 6 officers when they told you to get on the ground.

The woman that the ICE officer “pushed” was in a previous video harassing ICE officers and was pursued for interfering with the ICE officers. Pretti was in the middle of the street directing traffic when his fellow agitator was pursued by ICE. That’s when Pretti became involved in trying to seperate the officer from his fellow agitator.
Pretti resisted as ICE officers attempted to detain him. First shot comes when Pretti is trying to get up and is on one knee in a slouched position. just watched another video that shows Pretti reaching back toward his right hip as he’s shot trying to get up.

Dingos were found to have been introduced to Australia sometime between 5000 -10k years ago, Their nearest relative is the PNG Singing Dog.
Bullsharks are present worldwide and not endangered in any way.
Kangaroos are present in plentiful numbers and are cute but likely to gut you with untrimmed toenails if provoked.
