There was once a time, not even long ago, when a young surfer with a 40% alley-oop strike rate could earn a living off this Sport of Kings. First came sponsorship as one of the “local pros.” Next came a fine sales rep job for Hurley or Volcom. Last came retirement and a generous pension.
Alas, that “not even long ago” might as well be a fairytale. A pretend story passed from surf mother/father to li’l grom at bedtime.
Though right when surfers wishing to squeeze a dollar from surfing were about to give up, a fairy godmother has descended from Newquay, England (I think), waved a magic wand and gifted an opportunity for robust wealth to an entrepreneurial youth and/or human.
“Business idea for a young entrepreneurial human…” the post on Newest Newquay’s Facebook page by the ingenious Natty Beatts begins, locking the aforementioned’s attention directly.
The missive continued:
I’ve just started surfing and the bit that kills me is carrying the damn thing up and down to the water. I need a board butler (great name for a business).
Got me thinking, especially in high season, why is no one setting up a little business to carry people’s boards so they can use all their strength for surfing! Especially beginners with those bloody great foam doors – I would pay for that service, I’m sure others would, quick little tap-app on your phone and you would make a killing!
This is a genuine thing I think would do well, if someone wanted to set it up I would be happy to give them free mentoring (mentoring youths in business is something I want to set up down here anyway and I have over 10 years experience).
I see a lot of people in here looking for jobs, start a little business while you’re looking and see where it takes you.

remember Chris Lassen from Maui….he was surfer/windsurfer , that became a very sought after artist…whales and dolphins etc…….he hired a friend to set up his windsurfing gear at Hookipa….so when he wanted to sail….call his worker , so that when he arrived at the beach, he could just step onto the board and sail……when he came in same deal….he might have been the first one to do it in the 90’s!

Re Taj, first came sponsorship, then the 5 million dollar contract, the wins, lots of 2nds heeeaps of chick’s, so many chick’s then retirement many barrels at home, then marraige to an Indian model, 2 kids and inevitably the letter from the missus lawyer, “we will be taking 70 percent of everything, you can have 30” (if he’s lucky)
Still, he’s had a hell of a life.

Hawaiian pro tour surfer and I were having a chat. asked him his favorite wave on the planet. in a split second: “J-BAY”. said it’s the best wave in the world.
At my gym there is a sign that says “If you are strong enough to lift the weights… you are strong enough to re-rack them.”
I think every surf spot should have a sign that says- “If you aren’t strong enough to take your board to the water… you don’t below in the water”

yeah I think there was more jungle when I was there a couple of times in 73……story in August of 73 Mike Boyum and I were the only surfers on the island of Bali……..he was called Mushroom Mike , and was consuming shitloads everyday….had some with him one morning…went to Ulu’s , swell came up bigtime…he went in and I paddled back to Kuta!

when we surfed Sanur….i nearly fell over seeing such a perfect right…..there was this big shipwreck at the end of the wave ……someone stole the shipwreck, as when I was there last year…..did a tour of the otherside looking for rights…talk about change, couldn’t even recognise the coast only the wave!

I have a feeling old “bonnet girl” doesn’t actually enter the water. Seems more a beach influencer type that you see taking weird ass photos at the water’s edge. Granted, she may still need help getting the board down to water’s edge for the Insta photo. The young entrepreneur could charge her a few extra bucks for photo assistance.
