Hey Brutus can I ask your guru like mind a cuppla board questions? Do you think a shapers “DNA”, ideas however you want want to say only suits some surfers and not all? I got boards in my younger days off heaps of different shapers and got real mixed results. Got a few off DHD that I just didn’t get along with, then got some off JS and the first few felt good but then the last one was a dog.
I have been mates with Luke from LSD for about 30 years but never got boards from him cuz he was down in Sydney but then when he moved up to Angourie I was chatting to him about my problems and he said come down and see me for a surf and we will have a chat. Had a splash, showed him my current board and told him what I was feeling and struggling with and he gave me one of his and told me to have a few surfs and tell me how I got on.

I will answer a liddle bit vanilla…..firstly LSD does actuall customs and is low volume operator…which means he can give personal service and better bds…he’s rippa of designer shaper…..so you are in the best of hands, as he sorted your board problems.
When you talk brands like DH/JS/Marciano etc…they produce volume , and cater for those who want a certain brand and performance is secondary, the shaper just does not have the time to service real customs…
knowing that SITD is advertorial ( you have to pay) you get a pretty basic set of shapers….PYzel can shape all bds from kids to guns/slabs etc……DH/JS good small board shapers but no real design skills ( what design are they famous for?) and Marcio also…Britt is a pastor and hobby shaper……why do all CI’s have his dad’s logo and not his??

the branded boards are good average models , LSD supplied a personal touch to sort out your boards…..that’s why real custom orders and service…depending on how good the shaper is….I think there’s an enormous difference a stockie and a custom, even though I do get a lot of orders , some are just about the colors and the look!

The reason Pyzel has done so well, as well as Biolos, is that their boards are extremely user friendly across a spectrum of abilities.
John especially was ahead of the curve on the machine and being able to replicate those user friendly models.
But with them trying to get something radically different than what’s on the menu is next to impossible, even if you know them well.

Lane Splitter went good at fat, 2 foot Taco Bell Reef last week. Pretty drivey and goes rail to rail surprisingly well for how beefy and wide the recommended dims (which I initially had doubts about) were. Will report back after I get it in better conditions with a bigger canvas to work with.
As much as the board review is quite relevant to (as opposed to adjacent to) surfing, a board review from a guy who is 6’5″ and 250 lbs is kinda like a board review from the Lilliputian over at Stab. Doesn’t really apply to the average individual. Glad to hear you likey the board though.
You don’t test boards at that wretched place
In all honesty, board testing is fairly worthless given the fact that everyone surfs quite differently from each other. If you are back foot inclined and I am front foot, your review would mean nothing to me. Take the old CI Twin Finner (the OG TF with wings, not a twin fin) as an example. That is a full on front foot board that cannot be surfed off the tail, it will spin out. But if you surf with more of a front foot bias, its a fucking dream board when its small. If I told you that but you are the type that surfs back foot heavy, you would have hated that board.
I’m a driver too. You can classify most boards that way, drive or steer? Used to write R an D for two builders, would never submit the review until it had been tested in various conditions though I will admit that I traveled to empty point breaks which is a qualifier. I would shoe horn a few lefts to test heal side, but usually when i got back home to beach breaks.

finding the right fin size and placement on twins is tricky, and nowadays the fins end up pushed so far forward that putting your feet back on the tail like normal will place your foot behind the fins instead of over them. This is especially true if you are not paying attention and put your tailpad where it normally goes instead of shoving it forward a few inches.

Had a couple of them from Mike Mattison(Northern Alliance) and the went well, and I’ve seen other people killing it on them, but I struggled a little bit with that forward placement.
Just gave up a great used Tokoro that had traditional placement because finding and paying for the right size fins was more than I could take.
Should have just glassed a trailer on that one.

sounds like the twins you have been riding might have the fins too far back….have you tried a Twin + Stabilizer?
I see soooo many Twins with fins way too far back…….back in the day, Twins were at 11″ forward , 1 1/4 – 2″ off rail pointed in at the nose , which just so happens to be 1/4″ tow in!
Fins are the last frontier of design …so important like the wheels on a car…..very few people ride and test new design fins because….??
The bigger fins are what really separates the new versions from the old days.
To be sure they are fast and hold unreal.
I think I need to pull the tail in a little bit to compensate for the forward placement, and remember to set the pad over the fins, I am a little guy with little feet, and penis…
The twinzers nowadays are unreal, I have had unreal moments on them, the smaller fins out by the rail had them tracking less and easier to pivot at high speed.

too big a fin causes too much pressure and can stiffen a board up and slow it down……story, when we were all designing and shaping boards/guns/stepups for Hawaii…..we used same fins as short boards….AB was surfing channels in Hawaii with varying success…..spent a lot of time in Hawaii with AB and DD……his fins were tiny…..so we tried smaller fins (Thruster)…a whole new world opened up…took years , and we are still fine tuning fins/twins/thruster /quads etc……so little effort put into fins…
As far as experimenting goes , very little from todays vanilla shapers…not designers!

Randy Sleigh(RIP) shaped me a couple magic 7’0’s with that setup., though they were thrusters, but I figure quad or twin would be next level fast with turn on a dime capabilities.
I figure shorten it up, widen it out a little but keep the tail a little pulled in, allowing for smaller fins, and thicken it up a little.

I guess I just like the idea of more points to pivot off the rail with with four fins as opposed to one. The depth of twins makes me feel like I’m on ice skates. Same amount of area if not more but broken apart seems to add a more positive lift and hold. Maybe I’m naming that incorrectly, but hey might as well give surf talk a go on a supposed surf website.
