The Puerto Rican surfer and world record holder for most turns on a wave, completing an astonishing forty turns with a couple of quasi-airs on a five-minute long river wave in Indonesia, Dylan Graves, has delivered his most profound moment yet in his latest surf travel adventure.
Dylan, who is of middle age although not a fat, shiny, liver-coloured man, is an example of who we can be if we don’t fall into the trap of remaining in our velvet cages of couch, device, home.
In this video, he chases waves in Norway’s Lotofen, a wild ol archipelago just above the Arctic Circle.
“In the last episode, we pushed pretty far north in Norway and surfed freezing waves in the Barents Sea. This time we headed… less north. Still deep in the north, just not as far north.. Chasing waves through a Norwegian winter.
“After days in the Arctic, we jumped in the car and drove 15 hours south through Norway chasing a wave that our friend and swedish pro Tim Latte has been obsessed with for years. The destination: Lofoten. And while this was a mission to get to, all of Tim’s calls so far had been worth every bit of effort we put in.
“Plus it was a chance to see a different part of Norway, hunt down a few cold-water rarities, stop by the northernmost surf shop in the world… and somehow squeeze sessions into the shortest days of the year. In winter up here, the sun barely clocks in. Every surf is a race against light, weather, and time.”
It ain’t easy hunting waves in these parts of the world.
There’s no hacks, no shortcuts, just fifteen-hour drives, short days, long paddles, inconsistent sets, simple sometimes brutal commitment… as comfortable as that can be sometimes,” says Dylan Graves. “Ahhhhh surfing. Silly surfing to some. But to us it really does simplify these life lessons.”

He’s mistargeting Dylan, who is a father and husband, but I think he’s talking about an emerging trend – the doctrine of self-focus and self-reliance being preached by younger generations mostly via social media.
The belief that relentless pursuit of pleasure and having no responsibilities in life other than you figuring out how to get the next dopamine hit is the secret to happiness.
Which is actually an avoidance strategy which deepens our inherent lack of humility which is a recipe for misery.
We’ve seen this play out before on the individual level with plenty of people in surfing and rarely does it seem to end well as one ages, and seeing the sadness of some of my friends now going into their mid 40s-50s without a stable long term relationship and no children…fuck.
Granted, not all of us are cut out for relationships, parenthood, and enough people live a satisfied life without those things, at least on the surface. And many face fertility struggles. But that is far different than a life lived with the intent to avoid responsibility with the thought the purpose of life is to service oneself with as many pleasurable things as possible.
It isn’t a coincidence society became incredibly broken over the past 75 years. Moving away from the family, community, belief in a higher power. Embracing the sexual revolution, consumerism, selfie-filled social media.

Everytime I see one of Dylans videos I think what life would be like without our velvet cages, the ones filled with work, family, neighbors, contributing to our communities and the velvet bars that we are bound by on a daily basis, and if:

I wonder what will be said of Dylan at the end of days.
Dylan, a man who traveled the world in selfish pursuit of riding waves, created…..nothing, no children, no inventions, no contributions except digital images of him surfing. Many have housed him, fed him and gifted him their time and benefits of their homelands. He expended a lot of fuel in his pursuits and gorged on the natural resources of the planet.
Did Dylan inspire? Maybe. Maybe he inspired many other self-centered vloggers whom created mounds of digital content so they could enjoy their own selfish pursuits…..but at the end: what did he contribute to humanity? What did he leave us? Did one life breathe easier bacuse he lived?
