"If you don’t have a passion then find one and if you have one already then go grab it back like I did!"
The second-most famous surfer ever to emerge from England, a sodden island just went of France famous for its many picturesque mosques, has taken to Instagram to reveal an astonishing series of before and after photos.
Russell Winter, who is fifty, was the first English surfer to qualify for the World Championship Tour and, according to his Wikipedia post, “famously beat off Kelly Slater with his bare hands in a first round heat at Sunset Beach, Hawaii.”
In the photo carousel, we see Russell Winter, first, as a man who has lived life as a custodian of unfettered and rigorous excess, cheeks so adipose his eyes have become mere slits and barely able to waddle or to fit into a normal-size armchair.
Suddenly, a grunge sex kitten appears, a hairless and sculpted chest, the sort of man who makes a woman feel safe, and at the same time, deliciously overpowered.
Russell Winter writes:
Two and a half years ago my sobriety Journey began. I was ready and embraced it with open arms.
Still not completely happy working on construction sites and the things I loved the most were being taken away.I had to make a choice and put all my energy and passion back into my surfing.I wouldn’t be happy unless I worked hard to become the fittest version of myself to move forward.
Now at 50 I’m in the best shape of my life!
Still pushing boundaries and competing at the highest level!
If you don’t have a passion then find one and if you have one already then go grab it back like I did!
I was 200 lbs and came to Barbados at 185lbs and now 158lbs It’s never too late! Never give in!
Responses below the line were uniformly, and justifiably, positive, including a missive from senior powerlifter Shane Dorian, who writes, “Love this! Congrats man!”
Russ responds, “Thanks Shane! Your posts help me to focus on where I want to be in my surfing and life and I’m hoping to inspire others too! Let’s go brother.”
Life post-tour has been a little up and down, mostly down, for ol Russ, including a six-month suspended sentence for wielding a ceremonial sword at a trio of drunk hooligans in Newquay and a series of gigs working construction.
No word, yet, on Russ’ transformation from the world’s sexiest over 60, San Francisco-born surfer Laird Hamilton, a man with enormous and deeply sunburned breasts and a nose as red as a turkey-cock.
“The greatest longevity model we ever had” according to wellness experts, although Russ Winter may now be in the running for coveted title.

good for him, but those ’90’s boardies could shave a couple of kilos too…..
I watched that and then scrolled down to see this.

Funny how I was also a fat old English git who moved to the tropics, got fit and started slaying chicks. I can almost do a decent top turn now. It’s so much easier in the warm. Good on you Russ, an inspiration.
the most impressive makeover is JBG…..
You forgot about Carwyn Williams
He’s linked at the very top.
Try clicking the hyperlinks 🔗 to see how they work.
That dude was Welsh. Not english.
Tomatoe tamatoe
>The second-most famous surfer ever to emerge from England
Good thing you said “emerge from” and not “born in” because I was about to be really pissed off on Martin Potter’s behalf.
Don’t forget Sir Ted Deerhurst. Won the pro class trials at pumping Sunset in late 70’s. Met him in Santa Cruz in the 80’s super cool guy.
Never heard of that guy but he sounds really interesting. You know if that book about him released a few years back is any good?
Not sure. I believe he ended up committing suicide in a house on Sunset Point. I sold him a truck at Santa Cruz Toyota in late 80’s guy was cool as can be. Great surfer
Just googled the book I had never heard that angle. And the suicide thing is just something I had been told by some people on north shore. Never knew for sure.
oh and conspiracy’s abound on Ted…but what about Carwyn Williams he was before Russ?
Rodney Sumpter rocked a union Jack flag on his Longboard at the 64 (?) world titles.
…and then he links a surfer seemingly born in Wales. To some it’s a slight discrepancy, but to the welsh it could be ……not slight.
The most famous surfer from England is Russel Brand shredding in his lolly bag during “Forgetting Sarah Marshall”. Powerful stuff.
Potter was born in England. Unless that’s your point?
survived surfival w/ Griff , in case anyone keeping track
Missed the contest, anything good happen?
actually bailed after round 1 of mens – clear highlights to me were how well Willcox and Jack Thomas surfed in that first round, big clean Margs, both on their backhands, both cracking it.
Apparently a big controversy in the 2d round in the Willcox/ Dora heat, Willcox interfered but judges didn’t call it, arguments in water and their respective entourages allegedly almost threw down afterward.
I didn’t see it but watched it this morning, seemed pretty clearly interference, stab has an article up explaining what its writer saw in the aftermath. But Yago won heat regardless, so not sure what all the angst was about.
Also, Jack T lost to Griff in 2d round, so both first round standouts are out already.
I’m team Yago on that one, at least for the stuff in the water.
It didn’t seem to me that Yago was trying to do something cheeky to draw an interference, Wilcox was dumb to be sitting right underneath him under priority, he didn’t even get called for it, and Yago won the heat fair and square after that.
The funniest thing is it was so blatant both surfers thought it was interference and thats why they were blowing up at each other. Then the dumb cunt judges didn’t even give it hahahaha
Yago’s post heat interview was a classic…it really rattled him, the non interference call…..and ol mate Jacob fired up on him, with a verbal spray…..so lets move on…the forecast for margs just got worse….all onshore days quite strong and big swells till the end of the waiting period…..get on the Chardonay,LOL!
I went Kanoa. Safe pick on right handers.
ahhh, kettlebells – every over 50 dude’s best friend. Highly recommend.
that and TRT, apparently
True … a creatine guy myself – might just be placebo effect but definitely feel sharper when I’m taking it regularly
I notice cognitive benefits from creatine as well. I lose focus when changing tasks a lot and I felt creatine gave a small boost that smoothed those out.
There are studies showing to show that it energises the brain. I have elderly family members who have started to take it.
I’m sorry if I’ve asked this already but do you buy sets of the same weight or do you just need one? I have 35lb barbells and I use both for split squats and single leg deadlifts – how heavy should I go with the kettlebells?
There’s a wide range of stuff you can do with them, so you can pick a routine that uses just one or a different routine that uses two or a mix. I generally mix up workouts between sets requiring one and sets involving two. So I have 2 in the 35lb range, 2 in the 50lb range and one that’s about 70lb. My 50lbs get the most use. I’m 53, 5-10, 170lbs, and these days only moderately fit, fwiw.
You’re often doing more dynamic moves with the kettles (see this guy’s video above) so in my experience they actually feel heavier than the same weight doing simpler moves with a barbell. But of course it all depends on the user and your goals, if you’re younger, bigger or in better shape, then you might trend a little heavier, if you want to focus on more flexibility you might go lighter, etc.
In theory, you could sub out pretty much all your barbells, although I actually keep a couple handy just for curls and presses. Bottom line is that I like the kettles’ versatility and the fact that the workouts with them emphasize both strength and flexibility simultaneously, not to mention I find that they’re less boring to use overall.
Kettlebells? Just go on a surf trip somewhere with consistent waves and treat it like a reset for your life.
Not too hard to get as fit as Mr Winter without all that gay sweating and ugly shorebound exertion.

About to get that reset!!
Nice write up! Better than the stupid arguing that mainly ends up here.
I work on an oil rig. Very easy to become a fat cunt. Everyone I work with is a useless fat bastard or on the roids trying to look like Arnie but no cardio. Some try fasting and no exercise at all. Thankfully there’s no alcohol.
Its all about routine and routine starts with a good night’s sleep. I treat my 4 week hitch as a health farm. Obviously I can’t surf but I can smash out 50km a week with ease. At the mileage you lose 1kg a week. Deep in training will be 120km a week, going to be at 8 and getting up at 3:30 to run 30km before starting work. Sounds nuts but with routine you can do pretty much anything.
Had almost forgotten about Jamiroquai
And Russell Winter
Hmmmmm. Chicks of all walks love this style of rig. He will slay.
Xox
Be nice to have a little momentum before the last curtain call..
What a glorious article, here. What’s everyone’s favourite “hot mic” moment, throughout history?
This 65 year old mama has tightened up and declared that she’s through with the institution of “marriage” (as that’s clearly for younger folk), and the lads in the commentary booth have an opinion about it all.

T-banking?
Good on him, those opening shots is how I imagine Gwen if she was a fella
Sad but accurate at the moment
Another round 2 loss for your boy and Tyler having another “episode”. You must have been running for that second bottle of chardonnay.
Yeah it seems I might have overestimated Cole’s fire-heart. The guy rips and it’s still early but I don’t see him coming close to a title anytime soon.
I’m camp Gabe now.
Oh Gwen.
You are certainly very camp Gwen xx
LMB Cunt
Left Mouse Button came up when I googled that?
Lick My Balls. Any real Aussie should know that from the 90’s “mate”.
I think we have an imposter here
Cant relate
You always had a hell rig? It’s cool hey!
Xox
Its slightly less hell now.
Keep up the rootin!
Xox
Good on him. It takes a lot of time effort for that kind of transformation in your 50’s.
Fit Git
Vintage Reilly
Brilliant
Russell is a complete nutter, but really has a heart of gold. Really personable. Newquay is a town of many vices.
Coincidentally, I was listening to an episode of Soundings tonight, while watching the wozz, with a writer who wrote a book on using surfing to over come addiction. Thad Ziolkowski. It was a fairly interesting listen.

The problem with surfing is when I have a good session I want a drink to celebrate it and when I have a bad session I want a drink to forget about it.
and when I’m not surfing I want to have a drink to remember what it felt like when I drank after a session.
While I’m not worried about your laser focus on drinking, I must confess that after I surf tomorrow I will drink with my oldest. Then I’ll drink in Cville next week and I’ll surely find a reason to drink after that.
a challenge to Barny, Rocks, and Pic and Sean? stop drinkin for four months and tell me how mo betta you’ll feel.
PS. I was a heavy drinker but had no DTs. Lots of new time to kill when we’re not passed out.
Go 805 and Griff and his personal journal. I’ve been sharing mine with you derelicts for years (previous to this one.)
Workin on it but it’s so damn good
I’ve stopped drinking twice in the last few years after surgeries for 3 or 4 months each time. If feels great! Glad you’re on that train!
What takes you to cville? And where will you be drinking?
I have some business that requires me to be there at least once per year. And I will drink where the 40 somethings make me knowing they’ll try to hurt me since they know I’m an absolute lightweight these days.
when not in school worked for a bit right at the top of the downtown mall, strongly considered never leaving. Then talked to a guy who said ‘yeah, spend all my time in airports bc no work here so always flying to bigger places’, that did not sound great, ha
College towns offer an insulated micro economy of recurring revenue sources via the incoming freshmen classes BUT the thought of living in one after college seems challenging. The party must end sooner or later. I thought I might catch a lacrosse game but the schedule isnt favorable this time
lol
In grey, stormy, Cornwall, England, after a bad session you might also want a mountain of drugs to go along with a pitcher of beers. The place is grim for 9 months out of the year; or at least I think it is.
absent access to BG, what’s a guy to do? i quit drinking, lost 25 pounds, radically changed diet, sleeping habits, and haven’t had an incling of desire to taste booze again. still smokin’…weed and camels. since now access to BG, my typed words and ideas seem to be the same. in future, no new food porn, cause as B&B recently revealed, there were turd tacos. some food pics were mediocre but I did not post turd tacos!
Dry January, February, March, and April…and quit surfing in 1997. I loved surfing and tequila.
I have no desire for alcohol unless I smoke weed. But… can’t put the weed down.
after drinkin’ i’d smoke it and gain an enormous appetite. smoke a bowl(s) and move straight to the frig for scoops of Ben&Jerry’s and oatmeal cookies. never smoked during daylight hours but when tossin&turning a couple of hits and several hours of semi-sleep.
your’s? indica or sativa?
We missed you DSSS. Lots of haters on here but I always had your back. Bunch of others too. Beef and Beer being the biggest one.
Ditto
gracias~ we talk via ham radio~
I’m down
Good work Mr Nelson, always loved your work sir
read his book a couple years ago , entertaining. Will give it a listen, thx
Love stories like this. He must feel amazing.
Congratulations Mr Winter.
A lesson for us all!
You fit?
Still surprises the way people will devote their lives to having a flash house and car but let their body go to mud. The most valuable asset you’ll ever own.
Not saying I haven’t been a fat fuck at various times…
Mate, any fitter and they’d have to shoot me, as Shane Steds used to say. Mad dog!
Haha excellent!!!! Rooting is so good for you too.
Xox
And so is a heaps hard wanking and balloon knot fingering session!!
Something tells me you do far more wanking than rooting Cunt
Fuck oath Gwen, with the cost of living and fuel down here at the moment ya gotta watch every dollar mate. As the wise old Strayan saying goes, a wank a day keeps the hookers away
