Contest and crowd favourite Yago Dora, a man whose surfing follows that old adage “the more you leave out, the more you highlight what you leave in” was subsequently despatched in the interrupted semi by herky jerky Italo Ferreira, a human hurricane who stinks of burning hair, fur and horn.
In the final, Italo treated Postcards from Morgs star Morgan Cibilic with the cruel indifference of a wife to her long-time husband, and in the gals, new-ish mammy Carissa Moore was like a German potato salad, heavy and coercive, in her despatch of Sawyer Lindblad.
What did you make of the whole thing? Raglan, I thought, better and worse than I could’ve imagined and the crush on Italo has diminished quite a bit.
Well, it’s all over now and I can get back to being a mid level, semi-local Manu Bay enjoyer.
Comp didn’t effect (affect?) me really, other than missing a few fun surfs. Town was busy but not annoying, so that was ok. Vibe was good, a lot of crew obviously looking out for pros etc out and about.
I dislike crowds, so I didn’t really want to go to the comp proper unless it was balls to wall, 6ft+ ledge madness, even being at the King & Queen comp made my eye twitch a bit hahaha.
Interesting to see how the WSL packaged and polished Raglan up, I think they did really well, made it look like paradise. They handled the cultural side of things really well I thought (broadcast-wise, behind the scenes I don’t know), we Have DK and Hemi (Whaingaroa Maori Boardriders) to thank for that I assume.
Not sure what it will do locally long term, I don’t know how the points could possibly get more crowded than they already get during summer / xmas, but it’s close / already at the level of pushback from some locals.
I’m assuming local businesses did well, especially anywhere that could get a beer over the counter, heard a couple of stories of bars etc running out of stock and sending staff in to Hamilton to get more booze. not sure how that all trickles down to the whole community, but lots of money would have changed hands, with people putting places up on AirBnB probably topping the table on profits.
All in all a net positive to most people, but still some negative feedback on local FB pages, which is to be expected.
Big winners to me: The Groms.
I know a few of them personally (school etc) and most of the rest by sight from in the water, and they will all be beaming still after all the close quarters action they got to be part of. Enough froth to power the local grid for a few weeks.
Don’t really have an opinion on the surfing, it was all as amazing as could be expected from the conditions, Italos airs in the warmup were far crazier than during heats obviously, but the waves the other week were like an out of control beachie, with ramps and walls and bowls all over the place. I thought his safety spins were way over rewarded in the final, but Morgs didn’t really get out of first gear unfortunately (for him).
Glad it’s over, but don’t mind if it heads back (in the works appearantly).

I’ve seen tons of lookaways, and there’s been tons of them in the surfing world. Lookaways put a new twist on reality. There’s always a reason, or two, or… but… for lookaways… but… Greenough probably did the best one ever, when he piked gigantic pipeline, a kneeboarding expression session, and filmed it, somehow missing all of the legendary winner’s, Rex Huffman’s humongous pits on a, yep, a twin fin fish. Greenough, among others, hated twinfins. Look away… again… stupe’ nuttle, holder of the worst call in the history of surfing, (besides free rider’s, aka, please bring the wsl tourism board to lennox… so I can sell it, infamous rip Brazil call).
‘Today was the day: the North Shore Expression Session that had invited anyone to kneeboard, bellyboard, boogie-board and bodysurf sanctioned Pipeline. The contest was not for surfers, in fact Rory Russell and Mike Armstrong were the water patrol in the line up to keep any intruders out. There were about 30-40 kneeboarders from all over the world. My brothers Mark and Eric and many of our good San Diego friends were there in force to compete. I remember names like Ray Pina and a handful of other good riders but San Diego definitely had the best show up representing the U.S. I remember seeing George Greenough taking movies from the beach. It was monster Pipeline, hitting the outer reef at probably 20’ and doubling up and re stacking and exploding even harder at inside main peak. It was a machine for 12 hours, dawn to dusk. Howling offshore winds, thick, nasty and throwing. I was riding the only board I had, a 5’2” Lis Fish with twin fin set up. No leashes, they weren’t yet allowed. ‘
Anyway back to the latest, world wide, epic surfing lookaway. An elite, greatest ever human professional human athlete ever, in the history of greatest ever human beings ever, being greatest ever human beings doing greatest ever things ever on that fucking raggidy fat hander, did the all time choke.
In any genuine surfing lineup anywhere, claiming pole position, claiming and hassling, jockeying, posturing, whatever, for priority, for pole position, has laws. Fundamental to real surfing laws. Basic shit to real surfing. Number one being, DON’T MISS, DON’T WASTE THE WAVE THAT EVERYONE WANTS!!!

He would not have beaten either Felipe or Griff in the quarters.
His ceiling well established. Italo’s ceiling is the sky. You can argue, but not once did Morgan embrace risk. Not once did he push beyond his safety. Great surfing, limited to his skills.
You see, Risk is mentioned in the judging criteria. Safety is not. You score people surfing beyond the mean. Beyond their average performance. Morgan was stuck waiting for a bomb, the bomb, because he couldn’t surf a wave “ up”. Very few can, those that can and do are elite. Natural selection proven within a heat
For Ciblic to place second is a great result. So many things from superior surfers had to swing Morgs way. And they did. What an excellent end to a contest that lingered in below mediocrity for most of 9 days.

I’ll tell you why…..the waves were soft and slow paced.
Perfect waves for the power and speed of the women, whereas the men surf a lot harder and faster, so for the most part we ended up with repetitive cutback/snap back moves instead of down the line blasts.
If Morgs wanted to beat Italo he should have tried be more innovative. Had Italo stuck to repetitive turns back to the foam maybe Morgs could have beat him…..although Italo has a pretty decent rail game. Fact is Italo went with innovation and progression, yes with moves he does in his sleep but still, can’t blame Italo.

I actually watched final day , on fast forward……there is distinct gap between the Brazzos and the rest…..and yeah agree on Morgs..this year ,best he’s ever surfed for sure …..but Italo made him look like repetoired surfer as he doesn’t have the air game!
If Morgs had surfed a backup wave identical to his face-turning 8.8 he would have won.

The only things in this event that stood out to me was Felipe, Yago and Italo, Sawyer and the dark haired female jet ski driver.
Fil for surprise on every turn, Yago for smooth precision and flare, Italo because he did what he had to do to win in very pretty, but mediocre waves. Sawyer for solid surfing and dropping the ball. Dark haired female jet ski driver…looks familiar.
Morgan blew it by not catching waves while Italo seems to never stop catching waves.
Sawyer blew it by getting 9 and not following it up. In bloodspots, the judges always remember the last 30 seconds of a round. After Sawyer came out swimming, Carissa methodically kept building and soon sawyers 9 was forgotten.
judges fcuked that final by hugely overcooking Italo’s 8.17 and then having to go much higher for the 9.
Morgs then had no choice but to wait for a set that never came.
They rewarded what should have been punished on the scorecards- leaving us with the negative spectacle of Italo butchering prime peeling left point waves trying to do an air show.
I’m not one to usually criticise the judging, because I don’t know what I’m talking about anyway.
But i definitely found some of the judging to be suspect in this connie.
Only thing I can come up with is that they had some custom-made judging criteria for this leg, which would have definitely been conveyed to the competitors.
maybe Carissa deserved to win the contest, but I thought that many of her scores were overcooked. Nevertheless, it was nice to see her excellent, backhand surfing on the waves that she did get right, especially that one where she took the drop late, and as a result, all four of her jams were right up in the cooker.
I feel to give Sawyer (and her mom) a hug and tell her it’ll all be good one day. But I can’t, because I know the history of Kong, Taj, Sally, Rob and so many others who saw the light but could never actually touch it.
I doubt it was custom made criteria- more a vibe and a precedent that they were then obliged to honour.

The whole event was shambolic from start to finish. Was it a seal was it a shark. Were there any waves for 10 of the 12 days ? Capped off by Carissa Moores non stop 9s for repeated rebounds off the lip for the title. Sawyer had her on veggie toast in terms of progressive but the judges had their orders. Coming after another old’un winning in Snaps. Seems scripted.

I generally have a hard time being interested in WCT pros surfing in waves I would personally find perfect , just doesn’t seem to have any degree of difficulty, especially when it’s just dot to dot lip smashes & carves – maybe it’s pretty and ‘proper’ but who cares, Curren and Occy and AI and Parko all did that stuff better

No past peer other than himself. What he gave at Snapper was a master class on his forehand. He just taught the same curriculum backside.
There was one lateral ollie on the seque to Marley that no one noticed. I waited to see reaction. It was no ollie for points, it was purely a functional transition from outside line to the inside section standing up. So quick, he hit the mark and lost no speed instantly hitting his inside rail. Never seen it before, not a mention from the booth. Pushing the bar.

Saw a wsl post this morning about how italo did six air revs on 2 waves. I think they thought it was a big deal. I was left asking why did italo do that? The answer is of course the waves weren’t good so it allowed him to do that. Even the last day most waves were bent off the point so the surfer had to wait and wait and wait for the sections to hopefully present themselves. I’m not even gunna bother criticizing the wsl for this event. There is no point. We all saw what we saw. In my opinion that’s not a ct venue. We need to go to indo after aus for a couple stops.
