German surfers celebrate Beer Hall Putsch 2.0 as fabled Eisbachwelle reopens

"Nahrungsmittelunverträglichkeit!"

German surfers let out a hearty “Nahrungsmittelunverträglichkeit!” this morning after it was revealed that Munich’s fabled Eisbachwelle would reopen. The river wave, which has drawn the likes of Mick Fanning Jamie O’Brien, Dylan Graves and probably Ben Gravy was shuttered last year after a woman tragically drowned when her leash got caught on a rock.

Those standing by desperately tried to rescue, but to no avail, and city leaders shut the business down in order to evaluate.

When the water was turned back on, the wave failed to materialize leading to much chagrin. Surf Club Munich desperately tried to lobby the local government, though Eisbachwelle pioneer Walter Strasser felt the safety headache might just be too much for the town that once hosted the Beer Hall Putsch.

“I have so much experience with the Eisbach. I know exactly what the problem is. I could have fixed it within weeks, with very little funding. But the city told me they didn’t need me,” Strasser told local media.

Well, somehow the authorities figured it out and the standing wave is firing once more with some rules overlaid.

Taking to Instagram, the Surf Club declared:

THE WAVE IS BACK. We are happy, relieved and deeply grateful to see this place return — not only as a wave, but as a symbol of Munich’s surf culture. BUT NO ONE SHOULD CLAIM THIS MOMENT. Politics did not bring the wave back. The administration did not bring the wave back. No official process delivered this moment. The river did. And the community never stopped fighting for it. THE TRUE FIGHT IS STILL ALIVE. Today we celebrate. Tomorrow, we keep pushing. For a real future of the Eisbach. Not decisions made without the people who live this culture.

Hammertown.

There are some new rules, though, namely, “Only experienced surfers are allowed on the wave until 10 PM” and how jealous does that make you? Imagine if this rule was applied to all waves around the world? “Experienced” was not defined but maybe we can help?

What makes an “experienced surfer?”
