Three days after a Seattle man holidaying in Maui was filmed chucking a rock at an endangered monk seal’s head and subsequently getting hell beat out him, lickens as they say in Hawaii, his attacker has been awarded a “letter of recommendation and recognition” by Hawaii’s Senate Minority Leader.
Brenton Awa, who is thirty-nine, is a 39-year-old Republican state senator in Hawaii, a wild enough feat, given Hawaii is one of the most blue states in the country. He’s the Senate Minority Leader, representing Kaneohe through the North Shore of Oahu. First elected in 2022, re-elected in 2024 without spending or raising a single dollar. Brenton ran a zero-dollar campaign and won.
He’s a populist of the old school sort, favouring local issues, cost of living, housing etc, over partisan politics.
Brenton didn’t take real well to the monk seal attack and, in the fine wood panelled surrounds of the Hawaii State Capitol in Honolulu, announced that the Hawaiian, anonymous thus far, who beat hell out of the tourist, would received an official “letter of recommendation.”
“You’ve all seen the video of the monk seal that almost got hit by the rock from the tourist that threw it. And some of us have seen environmental activists, I like to call ’em, who took matters into his own hands to educate what might happen if you mess with our land or the animals.
“Our attorney over here wants to make it clear, we don’t condone violence.
(Cue attorney chuckling.)
“But we did make a letter of recommendation, recognition, for Mr Ambassador of Aloha…”
Awa called for all airlines flying into Hawaii to play footage of the beat down so “people don’t do this kind of stuff.”
One mill and a half likes with a who’s who of Hawaiian surfing diving into the comments, even the surf broadcaster, master storyteller and son of the South African jazz king and anti-apartheid activist Hugh Masekela, Selema Masakela is in there.
He described it as “An Ancestral Ass Whoopin.”

Been surfing the same spot over the last twenty years, and it’s crazy to think how I managed to make more surfing mates anywhere else.
Surfed this morning and I left wondering whytf I worked up the ladder of this hyper-localized, overrated reef for set waves with one outside section and basically a mushy burger straight to the beach. A ledge here or there.
Couple surf dads out, and it’s embarrasing. Yelling their kids into waves. Long period, one peak, crowded, so just long waits, lots of social management, and few opportunities to even do a turn. Unless the kid is obviously frothed on surfing I reckon most are cunts that can’t be fucked to take an interest in what their kids would like to do. Seen so many kids be forced into the surf thing when really their talents lied in other sports or extracurriculars.
Anyone else surf somewhere with long af period swells = long waits, ridiculous lineup politics, and low wave count?

Snuck-out mid week recently to score a place here that rarely gets good. First week of school holidays so was expecting the worst, as a bevy of surf dads around here too. Not a single kid in the water. Sport parents seem to be missing that the push to be a sports star is making kids hate doing the sport, as they associating it with hard work and – ultimately – failure. Want your kid to love a thing – scream at them that they need to finish another thing first before they get to do it. Make it the reward for work, not the work. Speaking of.

Dunno why people handicap themselves on “ alt” equipment that we left for dead as soon as we knew
I always presumed that alt equipment are for people who surf so much that they get bored by conventional surfing. Like pros.
And for when the waves are shit and you need some extra foam, in all the right places. Years ago I got a CI Pod for when the local reef was below chest high and it was a godsend. Gave me dozens of fun sessions where the half dozen other surfers in the water were struggling to get any speed or momentum. There were small days where I tried out a Takayama 7’4 “egg” instead of the Pod, but I never spent enough time on it for it to get fun.
From a technical design standpoint, Pro’s boards haven’t changed much in 20 yrs , while the alternative market has made leaps and bounds in design …….bit like riding your shortboard in smaller surf vs a fish?
The focus is on “USER FRIENDLY” meaning bigger market share with people who expect less out of the experience while digging the style.
when you consider that the Global market for shortboards is less than 20% and hybrid/longboards/mid lengths are where the sales and $’s are!
Actually sat down with Britt at Bells….and we had a great yarn …I even apologized about the Stab comments….which we both laughed at…as a entertaining beat up by Stab sensationalizing parts of interviews etc…just so you know when Britt was a young bloke , he came and hung out in France , as like his dad , he had a few drug problems…..great pastor and as we discussed for him to come out of his fathers shadow as a shaper designer…..Stab is a great marketing vehicle…..and one where now shapers are being highlighted , which is a great commercial advantage……So after checking Britts boards ….yeah he’s shaping really well ,is the head of CI…..good luck to him and them!

You’re right, Eric. Humans are just too simple to understand any issues that have more than a few factors.
If we understood what businesses were actually doing to marine life and marine ecosystems then we’d likely be as vocal as we are with this issue, which is as easy to understand as knowing that a big rock will instantly kill you if it lands on your head. Real simple.
If the average simpleminded person could understand then we’d demand more from our society. They tell us that we’re the problem so to turn off the tap when brushing teeth or to not use plastic straws. Whereas, instead, you could invest a couple trillion to reform the various agricultural industries and benefit many more trillions by reducing harm to water resources and to natural ecosystems. But then too many millionaires would lose their middle-man lunch. Plastic recycling, for instance, is one of the biggest lies that the coca-cola corporation, and their cronies, ever sold us pea-brained folk. Just bald-faced misinformation.

Talk about putting someone with massive trauma and mental health issues on full display. I liked him when I found out about him 3 years ago, and saw a couple of his press conferences. Then after he lost that first, big fight we saw how damaged he is. He would likely needs years of therapy to unpack his PTSD, and even then some people can never change. I don’t watch him talk anymore as it’s too sad. He opened up to the world and tried to be vulnerable, but he’s in an industry where that’s not a good thing. Got to have that armour on, at all times.
