The two-time world surfing champ Tyler Wright, the gal with the heaviest layback in the game, was last heard in these pages in March revealing how she was handling life after skull expansion surgery as well as her myriad back, hip and pelvis issues just prior to the Bells event.
That revelation came one week after Rip Curl had failed to renew her sponsorship contract after almost twenty years.
Tyler Wright, who is thirty two, is a noted lesbian surfer and, as you know, often uses the vehicle of pro surfing to push various, and so-called, “progressive issues.”
When Tyler married her gal Lilli Baker in 2022 it was to universal acclaim among surf fans and her peers. More than a few were even pressed to ask, why hasn’t one male surfer in its fifty-year history openly expressed his homosexuality, let alone walked down the aisle with his true love?
At the lightly watched El Salvador grand slam event, Tyler finished a wave with a “V” sign, the sapphic hand signal that has swept through queer sports culture from WNBA arenas to TikTok, Wright tagged her post “Happy Pride Month” and credited @t__cloud9 for the “celly inspo.”
Response was mostly positive, although CJ Hobgood, a world champ himself, and a dear lifelong friend of BeachGrit’s, wrote on Tyler’s page:
“This hill? This is how you want to be rem? Ok.”
Surf broadcaster, master storyteller and son of the South African jazz king and anti-apartheid activist Hugh Masekela, Carlsbad’s own Selema Masekela, not so much a lifelong friend of BeachGrit, fired back, writing in all caps: “NONE OF Y’ALL WERE CRYING WHEN JETT SCHILLING DID IT. LOVE YOU TYLER.”
The claim inspired this terrific meme.
I like the claim, its ferocity, mostly, the hunger and craving, the deep queerness of it and congratulate Tyler Wright for performing it with such passion.

I’ve decided to start supporting Tyler just because she annoys so many people.

That’s two of us. I missed the entire hate period, as I only was aware of Riss and Steph, and a couple others, as I occasionally scanned by articles that mentioned the ladies. I get the hate, though, as the past interviews that I’ve now seen paint her as very annoying.
Tyler has been surfing well, with a decent enough style and a lovely personal disposition. I’m glad that she has a “tour family” with Dog’s crew and I hope she can have a good season or two before she, hopefully, leaves the entire scene with dignity and an acknowledgment that nobody likes a person who whines too much and that whining doesn’t really bring about change anyway.
I’ll happily forgive her past misdeeds as long as she continues bringing quality surfing and solid vibes. Two titles means that she’s one of Australia’s greatest ever sportsmen.
