The immutable joy of stomach-wrenching sickness

“All men dream: but not equally..."

It came on swiftly, for some, more slowly, for others, but eventually stomach-wrenching sickness came for the entire family. It was the classic varietal, gripped guts, sweating, waves of nausea punctuated by either frontside or backside vomiting followed by heavenly relief, rinsed with more fevered sweat, washed with an attempt to choke down water, repeated from the top. It is a fool’s errand to wonder where disease comes from when traveling to or through the globe’s most interesting bits, including, but not limited to, Morocco. Some food-borne naughtiness? Ice gone wild? An exotic virus just lingering, waiting to pounce on the hygienically pampered? It could be any or all but the result is the same.

The man or woman who curses the hours spent curled in fetal position, promising never to return to any port south of northern Europe is a silly one, though. This Moroccan disease, like all oriental diseases before, makes a woman or man stout, hearty, like being bit by a radioactive spider, superhuman.

It was my second trip to the Middle East and I was nineteen. The plan was to fly to Cairo, travel through Jordan into Syria then back around to Cairo with my best friends Josh and Andy. Josh was well-read in T.E. Lawrence and insisted that the way to do things was to drink the local water and develop a cast iron stomach. We cheersed our small glass cups on the sweltering rooftop of our $15 a night hotel and felt invincible. To life! Five days later, I acquired amoebic dysentery in Aqaba, where Lawrence surprised the Turks from the rear after crossing the Sun’s Anvil, and enjoyed seven days and seven nights hooked up to an IV in a tiny hospital.

A few years later, Josh acquired spinal meningitis in India.

I am no longer cavalier, and certainly not with the family, but, and again, there is something true about the cast iron. Not necessarily for the stomach, maybe, but for the whole being. The person inoculated with various fancy bugs from hither and yon is the same who will survive the approaching apocalypse and also a dreamer, or to quote the great Lawrence, “All men dream: but not equally. Those who dream by night in the dusty recesses of their minds wake up in the day to find it was vanity, but the dreamers of the day are dangerous men, for they may act their dreams with open eyes, to make it possible.”

To life.

Noone is gunna ask so I will…what is that dog doing? Itchy dick? It’s owner gave him too much Moroccan hash? Looks to be climbing the wall

He’s sunning his bumhole.

Thoughts and prayers, Chad 🙏

Beware the Post-viral Syndrome. Heard it’s a bitch.

Strayan Cunt

So everyone on here is frothing for Brazil to start by the sounds of it haha. This is not a flex in the slightest but touch wood I have never thrown up once due to food only drinking too much piss. Pretty weird when I have spent a heap of time in some pretty average areas. Been hell crook but it has always come out of my rusty sheriffs badge and not my mouth for some reason

Hippy

I couldn’t not surf, it was more grey than brown

Cloud cover and glassy conditions…. dang man I was no longer in control

They did tests, never could determine what I had or which I suffered from, we’re talking Cedars Sinai You’d be surprised how Hen and Peck the treatment was.

Changed my life going forward in terms of eating and luckily, the only reason I visit doctors today.

Picard Madeoff

Yelapa blues cost me 20lbs back in ’85. Just as my doctor promised me, I still have that bug in gut today

longtomssecondcuztwiceremoved

Tell you what is stomach churning.

Getting dropped in on a prime set wave- telling the interloper to fuck off cunt.

Paddling back out and realising it’s a member of the Bandidos- some face tattooed Maori Mike Tyson look-alike who now wants to kill you.

Who then waits for you on the headland and would very much like to make the encounter violent.

Blowin

If this was prison you’d have to hold someone’s pocket in the yard for protection.

longtomssecondcuztwiceremoved

hahaha, luckily on such a sunny, beautiful day he was open to a reasonable discussion and a hand shake.

Rocks local

but did he talk like Tyson??

Strayan Cunt

Deserved a bashing I reckon now I know you’re a Lennox local but also a fucking Gayland supporter haha

I’ll put a few at the bottom of the trolley. We’ve got a cold snap coming and they’ll heat my place up nicely

I thought I had contracted rabies from a cat in Morocco, but was being a big hypochondriacal baby. Drank bottled water. Shat normally.

You can build up an immunity to shark bites, apparently.

Com Turren

it’s called going to law school

Picard Madeoff

And here I thought the only benefit of law school involved learning how to drink hard liquor and mastering the art of twisting the English language.

Instalo Feedeira

As a Brazo I can relate, we just had a Moroccan gut wrenching experience last weekend.

Chief Hot stuff

Ice, rookies.
Stick to beer in the turd world

longtomssecondcuztwiceremoved

Unfortunately the cast iron theory works in reverse.

It’s more like a slow rust.

More disease, more parasites, and the whole thing rusts out- the human body gets weaker and weaker , more and more prone to disease and bad health.

Ask any Indo vet who went through a couple rounds of malaria or dengue and who falls to pieces when they have a beer.

Dealing with disease is more like getting punched in the head- only so many hits you can take before the damage is permanent.

Chief Hot stuff

How about those diggers in new guinea in the 40s, with just some quinine some made it to their 90s, but hardly any.

Hey Freeride

How are the shark scientists going to reconcile potential new shark safe recommendations* such as avoiding clear water/ low swell / bright sky days with the decades of insistence that sharks only ever hit humans in mistaken identity? The two theories sound awfully contradictory.

•According to that Andrew bloke at Swellnet. Not saying he’s the Bad Guy but It seems
this is where the shark safety recommendations will soon be heading if they are to reflect reality

longtomssecondcuztwiceremoved

a few reality checks ahead I think.

Twice Dengued and yes, everything autoimmune imaginable.

@TheRealJackMeoff

Fun fact,
There are 4 different strains of dengue, so even though you build up an immunity to one, you are still susceptible to the others.

Did you get the leopard skin rash one? That almost laid ya’ boy Flatlately flat.

Rich Marx

I read an article a month or so back that talked about birth order. They’ve known for a while that first borns have on average higher income and education levels than second or later and they’re finding evidence that it has to do with getting sick less during their toddler years. edit: Because the older kids bring home colds and flus from school.

BograilCutback

Well boys I am wrapping up the best week of my life and I am questioning all my life decisions as I fly back tomorrow to Seppolandia and leave the only place on earth that people think I’m from there and not a seppo cunt or a terrorist wog.

haven’t thought about surfing once and I come back home to my little altar of boards and a “program” and jerking off with you loveable degenerates here online.

I’ve had the opportunity to live in other lands and travel a decent bit, and I promise you I’ve never been so taken by a place. Surfing hasn’t even been on my mind and I am hardly missing it and I’m sure one of the Australians will convene a tribunal to judge my state of grace but core conventions be damned I needed this.

Barrelled

And you were where?

BograilCutback

Spain, Madrid and Barcelona

Barrelled

Did you see Chas?

BograilCutback

I don’t like when he’s shitty Chas

Barrelled

But you were both in the Middle East.

BograilCutback

Almost touching tips between our respective countries of leisure

channelbottom

Mate, there’s plenty of surf in Spain and Portugal. And fewer sharks. Get your ass over there. Seppolandia is cooked. I say that as an ex-pat Seppo who would never move back. It’s going to take generations, and possibly quite literally publicly executing the billionaires to put it right.

Strayan Cunt

I had no idea you were a Seppo CB or I never would have offered you me spare room haha. What brought you over here, how long ya been here and do you enjoy our way of living? Most importantly have you ever bumped into Andy C around Newy?!

Barnycle

I watched a podcast last night that said the same thing. The guest has run a podcast that researched QAnon for the last 10 years, or so, and says that the country is much too far gone and that successful resistance is no longer possible. The entire political and power structure is completely wrapped up. Not suggesting that you watch it, but I’ll still link it. The host is an intelligent fella and I like his interview style, not in this episode but in general. The guest, on the left, made me angry but I still watched to see what he had to say; in the spirit of listening to dissenting views.

Rocks local

hope you found a better god

Skippy

on my bucket list sounds amazing

Pauly Matt War-Shore

Don’t go to Barcelona if you’ve just quit drinking, that’s my tip.

Great city for it

Strayan Cunt

Loved me time in Spain seeing family. Some cracking looking Sheilas over there but I just couldn’t understand a word they were saying

BograilCutback

I knew we were wog brothers. Shame you don’t speak Spanish.

Strayan Cunt

Mate I barely speak passable English

BograilCutback

Thoughts and prayers, etc xoxo

Strayan Cunt

I imagine when I’m on the piss what comes out of my mouth doesn’t really sound like a language and more just a sequence of grunts, fucks and cunts with a few real words thrown in here and there. I’m guessing it comes from a lifetime of surfing aggressive lineups with cunts who were more like wild animals than humans and working on job sits since I was 16 and it was the same deal?

Whenever I was overseas I relied mainly on wild and expressive hand gestures, always with a big smile when confronted with people who couldn’t understand me and that seemed to work well. Good job I’m such a fucking handsome cunt ay hahahaha

BograilCutback

Fuck yeah

Chief Hot stuff

They probly still dont know what language you speak

Spiritual experience?

In a sense yes, just a bit surreal. Felt very connected at one point to the whole experience and felt like i could melt into the ground. Met some people that really cracked me open a bit.

Phil's Wart

Good.

longtomssecondcuztwiceremoved

sounds like you found your spot mate- why not build a life around it?

surfing in California just seems to make you miserable.

BograilCutback

I’ve had quite a few whinges on about surfing haven’t I?

Appreciate the gentle cupping of support.

Nah but in all seriousness it’s on my mind and while I do need to make my way back home I am in a place where this could make sense. Life evolves

Rich Marx

Where in CA are you?

Tom House

I’m all for new experiences, etc., but the one thing I’ve really, truly learned in my 40+ years is wherever you go, there you are. I fantasize daily about uprooting the family for Hawaii or Australia (which makes sense for us) but I also realize that in 6 months, the mind would start wandering anew.

BograilCutback

I 100% agree and I’ve lived abroad for a total of almost 3 years between Egypt and Australia, and the reality is that you are exactly as you said who you are wherever you are. I will say though that having traveled and gone to live abroad as I have, I’ve never had the sort of response that I did to when I visited Spain. Just letting it settle in as o wait for my flight out of Dallas now.

Chief Hot stuff

I always find when overseas ,time seems slower, like wasnt yesterday january?

I had a great time there too, met a korean uni student on the bus, very friendly.

Whereabouts are you? On the Med somewhere?

Com Turren

sounds like that time when I went to Iceland in the 2010s, except that I surfed and everyone knew I was American once they spoke to me in Icelandic and I had no clue what they were saying

Tom House

I’m sorry, where are you or were you

injury

Got a gastro bug in El Salvador post rain rivermouth surfing. Spent a night in the bus station hotel in delirium, thought my family were foxes. Still going a week later, on a bus in Mexico, shit my boardies, had to get them to drop me side of road in middle of day baking hot sun. Travelling alone, 10k walk into La Ticla carrying board bag, finally made it to sand and collapsed into blue Pacific.

Was introduced to Delicados cigarettes there, a wonderful cigarette, anyone know if you can still buy them at an Oxxo?

Get better Chas, most of these are viral but get on Abx early when travelling.

Skippy

very poetic bravo

‘Shit My Boardies’ is a fantastic potential user name.

Appreciate the effort to entertain us , Mr Smith.

In sickness and in health etc

Cheers

A day and a half out and the lads at Surfival don’t have their page updated to make picks. Every contest there are people who don’t make picks and lose, most likely due to the sites poor timing. What the fuck is so hard about this for them?

meh, I’m only hanging on to the Women’s second chance this point.

Didn’t the Turks surprise TE Lawrence in the rear, also?

Did you make it to the Prado while in Madrid?

Oriental vs Occidental diseases….discuss.

Preston

I’ve watched the whole crew roll around the foreshore on a trip to Natividad Island. Both ends, full blast. Prior to the trip I was advised to avoid anything fried by our hosts. Although fresh lobster and abalone looked tempting, they use and reuse rancid cooking oil. It’ll get ya every time.

c4

Was hoping the Lance Collins documentary would be free on YouTube by now haha. Maybe I’ll pay for it.

Michael Flatlately

There goes my theory anything deep fried is safe. That said, always best to avoid bottom feeders in them parts too, literally and figuratively.

frank

does Chas know he’s in Africa? not the “orient”?

maybe if he had a big tall ladder, it’d help him get his bearings

PacificNorthPest

(pushes up nerdy glasses)

mwell actually, the Orient is a Western idea, not a specific geographic location. It’s been pointed at a lot of places by a lot of native English speaking writers, including Morocco, by Chas and many previous.

(Turns around to receive well-deserved atomic wedgie)

frank

Chas should not be using “oriental” full stop, of course, as it is an obsolete and denigrating term, so let’s pass the wedgie on to Chas, he earned it!

Blowin

Would you have any idea if it was denigrating or not if you weren’t told how to think?

frank

probably much less mentally taxing to just stick with the opinions you already have?

Chief Hot stuff

Is it ,
people of the orient?

Rich Marx

My guess is that Chas originally had MENA in there but decided to bait people to correct him because it’s additional engagement.
