Four days after a Sydney mum was mauled by a Great White in a flagged swimming area yards off Coogee beach, nine months after Mercury Psillaski was bitten in half by a Great White near Dee Why and four years on since Simon Neillist was eaten alive by a Great White in front of a bank of phone cameras at Malabar, the NSW Minister for Agriculture has told an interviewer there ain’t enough Great Whites out there.
Ironically, six months before he was killed Malabar swimmer Nellist posted on Facebook, “Shark net and drum lines protect no one and kill all kinds of marine life each year.”
It was the first fatal shark attack in Sydney since 1963 when the actress Marcia Hathaway, legs as delicate as a crane’s and let’s not be coy here fine jutting breasts clearly created by God, was hit in Sydney Harbour although not, as you know, the first, or last, fatal Great White attack in Australia where the fish has been afforded federal protection since 1999.
And here we are with Tara Moriarty, who grew up one hundred miles away from the coast, making the wild ol claim on Sky News that we gotta plump the Great White population up a little more after it was politely suggested that maybe, like, just maybe, there’s more Great Whites out there than y’think.
The last epoch where Great Whites put the fear of god into Sydneysiders was in February and March, 1922, when Great Whites killed 18-year-old Milton Coughlan and 21-year-old Mervyn Gannon.
Thirteen years later, and only one week apart, two swimmers were killed by Great Whites, one at Maroubra and the other at North Narrabeen.
Back then, no one was real squeamish about killing a fish and, so, beaches were netted and Great Whites hooked if they threatened to give hell.
Now we’re back to a kind of twenties, thirties scenario.
And a little irony surrounding the Coogee attack this week.
The council had only just erected giant banners celebrating “gentle giant” sharks, which have now been removed.

Apparently Sharks have roamed the oceans for roughly 450 million years. This means their ancestors evolved more than 200 million years before the earliest dinosaurs and even predate trees.
So, do they have personalities, and show individual traits, from one shark to the next?

The attack cluster on the north coast of NSW back in 2014/15 led directly to a big increase in NSW Govt expenditure on shark mitigation. The spend jumped from maybe $1m pa to $16 million over five years. The program attracted more and more funding until it now sits around $30mill pa.
Re WA, the fisheries are a WA Govt responsibility. The WA State Govt is absolutely swimming in money thanks to the weird disparity in GST distributions, which is mostly due to east coast state GST earnings being unevenly distributed to WA. If you’re seriously concerned about WA funding for shark mitigation, go and stick it up the WA DPIRD. They could spend more than NSW and it wouldn’t even scratch the surface.
I was able to benefit from that expenditure in 2019 on my only visit to Aus. Paddled out, alone, at the break where the Japanese man got taken, just north of the Ballina wall. I wasn’t sure if it was even a surf spot but I saw a wave so I walked over from the carpark and asked the lifeguard.
He said that it was indeed a surf break and that he’d send up the drone to monitor me. Told me what to do if the drone came down low, etc. He kept the drone up for my whole session, which was unfortunately short as the wave fell apart with the changing of the tide. I’ll be forever grateful for that sort of care and attention. My heart breaks for my aussie brethren and the lack of support that they get from the general public.

22yrs surfing ToS and yesterday was first time I paddled over and paddled straight back because too sharky. Black swamp of baitfish hugging the rock wall, birds going to town, big fish feeding frenzy on smaller fish, nobody out. Drove to Cooly to surf with 200 dudes instead of none.
Few months ago we had three days of bulls tearing through the shallows, pinning the crew out back, one guy got a light bite paddling through them, others hit by tails etc, somewhere between 20 and 100 bulls. Around the same time on a pumping clear sunny day a huge white stalked the lineup such that everyone with a ski or boat gave everyone else a lift back to spit, completely emptied the lineup.
We’re not seeing fins on the regular but the activity in the water is crazy, never seen before. All local crew saying same. Feels very likely someone gonna get hit in QLD soon. Yeah it’s still worse in NSW, but boots on the ground here, we don’t have confidence the nets are doing much. This year feels different to all others.
It’s sooo fucked up ay. Surf on me own heaps of mornings before work around Kingy and genuinely feel like anytime I could get taken out. Gotta protect those Noahs though, they were here first we keep getting told.
