"My head gasket is gone. Destroyed."
The highly-anticipated Ultimate Fighting Championship bout between Conor “Mystic Mac” Mcgregor and Max “Blessed” Holloway ended after just 69 seconds and in major disappointment for fight fans drooling to see the Irishman in action once again.
McGregor, of course, was a major star of the past decade with memorable clashes against Jose Aldo, Eddie Alvarez and Nate Diaz. His outsized personality was ready made for the sport of dings and he was embraced near and far.
Alas, injury and sexual assault charges derailed the 37-year-old, his last fight coming five years ago and ending in a gruesome broken leg.
Holloway is, of course, a very talented 34-year-old who hails from Hawaii and is married to professional surfer Alessa Quizon. As happens, he also surfs.
McGregor and Holloway first fought 13 years ago, McGregor winning by unanimous decision. This time he came out kicking but looked like he hurt his knee, straight away, leading the referee to call the fight in under two minutes.
Afterward, Holloway declared, “When I saw him hurt, I was like, ‘Man, come on. Call this.’ He was done, you know? I just [wish] him a speedy recovery.”
McGregor, taking to social media, shared, “My head gasket is gone. Destroyed. I had no injury / injuries going into the fight. I was throwing kicks, planted and jumping, all throughout camp as well as backstage before the fight. This came out of nowhere. I am beyond dark here. I can only describe it as hell.”
UFC CEO Dana White surmised that McGregor had blown his ACL leading armchair grapplers to wonder if Holloway’s surfing was a key to strong knee ligaments. Though I am not a doctor, it seems reasonable that wave riding is pretty good for the knees if one is not attempting big ol’ airs to the flats.
Something McGregor might consider if he dreams of attempting yet another comeback.
