"I didn't ask for his advice. I don't know him and he doesn't know me."
Strange and divisive days, these, with almost any interaction with strangers examined from multi-pronged, loaded angles. The latest bit comes from a surfer who was told to “paddle harder” for a wave and took it as a vicious sexist slur. But let us examine the case of Jana Barrett, a fitness and movement coach who boasts 85k followers on Instagram.
Barrett took to the platform to share:
A man I’d never met shouted ‘paddle harder’ at me in the surf last week. And it made me furious! I didn’t ask for his advice. I don’t know him and he doesn’t know me… what’s happening in my body or what I’m recovering from. But he felt completely entitled to tell me how to surf. And we both know he wouldn’t have said it to a man. What men on surfboards and in gyms, on trails and at the golf range never see: A woman paddling through day 2 of her cycle, surfing through perimenopausal fatigue that no amount of sleep fixes. Recovering from illness. Women’s bodies are not men’s bodies. Our hormones fluctuate across our cycle and across our lives in ways that directly impact our energy, our strength, our recovery and our output. The audacity is not just one man on a surfboard. It is a culture that has always felt entitled to tell women what to do with their bodies. How to move them, how hard to push them. How they should look and perform. We have been taking unsolicited advice about our bodies our entire lives. I paddled at exactly the right intensity for my body that day. I know my body. The only person qualified to give me advice on how I move my body is me. And maybe my coach. ho I actually asked. Tell me your version of this. The unsolicited advice from men. I have a feeling the comments on this one are going to be something.
Something they were. A sampling:
These comments. I’d love to hear a man shouting “paddle harder” at another man. It doesn’t matter if they *think* it’s supportive, that’s the whole point, they need to pull their heads out of their own arse and actually listen to women. We don’t want unsolicited advice so don’t give it. Ask if we want it or we can ask if we want it. Being cheered on, that’s totally different. Had he yelled “go for it”, “that’s awesome”, “yeah!” this post probably wouldn’t be here.
lf the people telling you your enotional reaction was wrong or overblown are actively shaming you. They need to go study what an emotion is, where it comes from, what its purpose is and how many wrong ideas about emotions have been used to gaslight women. They are all guilty of internalized misogyny. He crossed your boundary. If that doesn‘t make you angry, you have been well trained to turn other people‘s transgressions against yourself.
I used to get it a lot cycling. A lot don’t appreciate that you’re just doing something you enjoy, it’s not about speed it’s about the moment.
Etc.
A thoughtful professional surfer took a lightly different stance, opining, “Woman gets told to paddle harder, presumably as in most cases, as a word of encouragement to not miss the wave. We’ve all seen it with beginner, surfers, etc. They just have no clue what’s going on behind them.”
I would say men get told that, too, if clearly blowing it. Have you ever thought you were encouraging your fellow surfer? Will you think about it differently now?
Getting “furious” about unsolicited advice does seem a bit much, though.
Something to ponder, I suppose.

Can speak from experience on both ends.
Surfing in the Telos last year, i was sitting on the shoulder waiting for my turn at a soft well known wave with a mellow crew. A lady was paddling for a wave and almost onto it, i was giving it the go go go as encouragement. She missed it and then paddled up to me and said, can you shut up, i don’t need your condescending encouragement. Fair enough.
Recently in the Maldives, surfing a nice Indo style left. I’d waited my turn and a good one came to me. I positioned it wrong as it was a fast take off that then seemed to back off right as it came to me. Bloke next to me said, wow you really blew that one. I wanted the ocean to swallow me and I’m still replaying it in my head, despite getting 10 other good waves that session that i barely remember.
This is the same cunt who misses the wave, and immediately still thinks they are next in line.
As a dad to a beautiful girl and an uncle to two nieces who I surf with on the reg I have actually given this some serious thought today at work and this is what I’ve come up with.
The last time I properly lost it in the surf was maybe 5 years at my beloved back beach and it was properly pumping. Dredgy 6ft left pits and not even that many cunts out. A guy I kind of recognised was sat in priority when the wave of the day came through and cuz I’m trying to be a better man I asked him politely if he was going. Yeh I’m going. You sure? Yep. Now I’m a little off it that I couldn’t go but that turned to absolute fucking rage when I turned around to see this thing just hosing down the line and the dumb cunt still sitting there!!
Now what happened next as yous can imagine was not a polite exchange of opinions, although I will proudly say no physical justice was handed out but the guy disappeared down the beach to surf another peak as he should. You say you’re going you fucking go, even if ya go over the falls and get flogged. I wonder how poor old love in this article would respond to this “advice?”
I have tried to bring my grom up to be strong and resilient and so have her teachers but this Karen pussy and Sheilas like her just make our jobs harder and harder. The term equality is just sooooooo fucked up cuz if most females heard the way men spoke to each other on a job site they’d be properly blown away. What women want I think is to be judged on their own merit for their hard work, intelligence and diligence but the sensible ones don’t want to be treated as men cuz they realise how fucked up we all are haha. The Smiths however say it better than I ever could
before last night had never watched one minute of stab100 , but watched the new obx session – and was highly entertained.
(am pretty much over surfers on social media , of all genders )

I had a guy yell at me for blowing a take off just last week. He yelled “if you are too deep let someone else go KOOK!” I told him to stop with the sexist remarks.
Currently at the Beach Bar and it’s difficult to hear the announcers over 50 cent. The waves don’t look good at all.
She must have surfers ear. He said ” paddle IN harder !”
Guessing he watched her miss a bunch of waves. No doubt paddling with way too much nose out front.
“paddle harder fffs! “
(and get the fuck out of the way )
Blaming your period for being a kook is a new one

I mentioned to a young woman that she had her wetsuit on inside out… Am I part of the problem?!
HOW DARE YOU
Thanks for clarifying…
I once I had a gal on my sofa, who told me to paddle harder…
is she a sexist?
okay, I lied…it was more than once
Is consensual sexism still sexism? You decide!
I usually take my bonnet off before surf, that way bees don’t get stuck in it.
This is a horrible story to read about and has made me really sad for the day. Surfing through perimenopausal fatigue sounds really tough and I hope she is OK now xx
When I was a little tyke with long, straight blonde hair I had an older male surfer say to me, it’s great to see more girls out in the lineup! and it was indeed disconcerting
Ive used that one when some little hassling long haired grom comes out, always throws them off, even better when they try correct me about being a boy.
small pleasures
Was that you surfing South newy in 1994?
My dream is it could effect the kid for 40 or 50 years !
these ladies are coming across softer than (Derek, take it from here)
Here’s my two cents before I even look at the comments below.
Learn from him, ignore him, or tell him to fuck off. Yes, misogyny exists, but sometimes we see what we look for.
If you are being physically threatened, that’s a different situation.
Surfed a wide open beach break this morning. Miles long. Peaks up and down the beach. Pick of the litter. 70+ degree water. Hot in a short arm long leg 2mm. There were good surfers out. There were bad surfers out. There was even a surfer that I talked to on the beach that it was his first time and asked how does he get to the outside. I gave him some advise. Told him to run up the beach because the current will push you to the north and just gun it in between sets. By the time you get out you will be by your friends. I cherish these days where you get any wave you want, the vibes are good, and you don’t have to engage with idiots like the person in this article.
sweet
I can’t imagine telling anyone to do anything that would up their wave count.
Hooting people into closeouts is a pretty joyful experience. Can recommend.
lol, I love it.
It can be therapeutic .
I’m surprised the word racist wasn’t added.
Such toxic patriarchy on display from all you on here.
Almost like y’all got tiny wee-wee’s…
Says the girl dad. Care to explain that stance or did you just want to write “tiny wee-wee’s”?
almost too easy… https://youtu.be/EYOClKjDJ4w?si=_eYmpyenfExIp24b
At this point, you’re just babbling non-sense with no substance to anything you might be trying to say.
Your toxic masculine energy is making you an easy troll.
Maybe some yoga and a facial to chill you out?
Your self induced “mater” fog is getting in the way of your reading ability.
Those high T levels are dangerous at your age.
Try not to take your toxic masculine energy out on those poor girls out in the lineup🤣

Trying too hard hombre.
It’s all about timing and technique… https://youtu.be/XsX0J-Og-cE?si=3dJbmBcoxlKVNaGv
The encouragement may not have be misogynistic but it was dumb. Gotto discourage nowadays if you’re fighting the good fight
this is the way
