Will Filipe Toledo fly?
Event number seven on the World Surf League’s fabled Championship Tour swings the waiting period gates wide, for the Outerknown Tahiti Pro, this Saturday with surf fans all in a tizzy after the month-long layoff.
The last time we saw our heroes and heroines was way back in June, if you can recall, wherein Yago Dora and Sawyer Lindblad hoisted the hardware over a throng of passionate Brazilian surf fans on the sands watching the Rio Pro. Heading into the South Pacific leg, with Leonardo Fioravanti atop the men’s leaderboard and Gabriela Bryan atop the women’s.
While Fioravanti will face off against either Ramzi Boukhiam or Oscar Berry in round 2 heat 9, surf fans might already be gassed, having spent all their attention spans four heats earlier.
Yes, for round 2 heat 5 presents Japan’s Connor O’Leary against Brazil’s two-time Lower Trestles Finals Day champion Filipe Toledo.
Typically, this would just another bout betwixt two talented surfers in the midst of rough seasons. O’Leary currently 19th in the world, Toledo 15th. But August 8th and 9th, there at the End of the Road, won’t just be another day.
The official World Surf League forecasting website, Surfline, predicting inhumane waves that will claw the clouds (15 – 18ft) and stay massive through the first week.
O’Leary, brave and bold, will be a known quantity. Toledo, though, is a wild card.
The 31-year-old has notably chickened out at Chopes many times, posting 0.0 heat scores, refusing to paddle on set waves, getting lapped by geriatrics. He has reacted to the judgement of a world champ who won’t paddle by denying he’s scared, lashing out at those who dare challenge his moxie, being sullen.
Now, many surf fans, I feel, tune in to watch Toledo fail to materialize once again but we’ve all seen that show too many times. But wouldn’t it thrill beyond if Ubatuba’s pride and joy turned on a beast and sent it, shoving his bravado in all the armchair critics fat mouths?

Actually mate it was the complete opposite hahaha. MC was a pretty decent surfer but NOWHERE near as talented as others round here but he worked like fuck on his heat surfing even though suffering major health complications and probably over achieved as even he would admit.
Incredibly good human though who is very grounded and has a great take on life and surfing. Pip on the other hand has all the talent in the world but is too big a soft cunt to even have a crack at medium sized Chopes and too big an ego to admit it which makes him a complete prick in my eyes.

My mate only lasted a year on tour but it coincided with that swell at Chopes when Wilko refreshingly came out and admitted he was shitting himself, 2014 I think it was? Me mate is from the Goldy and will happily admit he is far more comfortable in dreamy, sand bottomed right points rather than heaving lefthand death slabs and also freely confessed to be shitting himself about what he was about to face.
Thing is though both of them come the start of their heats sacked up, threw themselves over the ledge and actually ended up getting getting some sick pits and making some heats. The surf world was fucking stoked for em after admitting their fears and I personally know me mate was fucking proud of himself and was pumped as for the support he received.
Then theres Pip who after 10 years of going there even refuses to admit he has a problem. Even when it looks fun as and nothing even remotely in the terrifying range he just sits there during his heat looking like a fuckwit. That heat he had against Hog and Kelly is a great example. Then he paddles out at fun Pipe, doesn’t catch a wave and claims he has food poisoning and then when called out has a massive sook and takes the year off for his mental health. This idea that it’s only Pip shitting himself is so insane and most of the tour are nervous as fuck.
Fuck that shit and anyone backing him cuz thats properly fucked and I aint having a bar of it. If he owned up to having a problem I would maybe give him a little leeway, but cruising around with a huge lion tattoo on your chest, claiming like a fuckwit when its 2 foot he can get fucked the massive softcock

Yeah weird thing is it’s the natural way of any line-up, right – the cameras and people watching from sofas is just a hyper version – you’re being watched and assessed, then judged wanting and no more set waves for you. Surprised he made it so far.

Oh absolutely. The heat you referenced with Slater and Hedge was almost laughable. I think he’d get some respect back if he would just be upfront about it. I also think his pops puts a lot noise in his head.
That record was first proudly held by Ricky Basnett in 2008 then Raoni Monteiro joined him in 2018 and rained on his parade.
However, with the schedule this year potentially having 13 comps, Oscar could hold the record for the most last place finishes.

I will say I’m going to appreciate surfing like never before after this break. I’m 63 and have been a surf RAT since I was 13. Gonna be cautious at first but hopefully be surfing 5 hours a day in the small to just under medium size n shore all winter long
