The Super Girl Surf Festival kicks off today in Oceanside, California with much excitement crackling in the air but maybe too much excitement? The world’s largest female surf event is celebrating its 20th anniversary with the World Surf League Qualifying Series 4000 bit unfolding there in the water and a stacked music lineup, headlined by Iration, Hippie Sabotage B.O.B and K.Flay unfolding upon the land.
Well, the craving for Iration, Hippie Sabotage et. al. was so great this year, that festival organizers were forced to set up an online registration portal. Event Director Rick Bratman told Fox 5, “Being our 20th year anniversary, we’ve had an absolutely overwhelming response to being able to come out to the event, so we implemented a system where we allowed people to register for some of the concerts in advance.”
The concerts, and surf bit, have always been free and continued to be free but then the registration portal became overwhelmed, Bratman continuing, “The people that wanted to get access was pretty extraordinary, and it happened very, very quickly. At the core, the most important thing is this is a healthy and safe environment for everyone to be in, and so we did have to make a necessary but unfortunate decision to cancel the advance registrations for people, and we understand people will be frustrated by that.”
Yup. Bummers-ville for the unlucky who had their tickets pulled, which included Oceanside local Ron Binion who has been attending the fest for the past six-ish years. “We were really looking forward to seeing Iration play, and my girlfriend, that’s her favorite band,” he shared with the news outlet. “I kinda felt that we were so early and one of the first ones to register that we were kind of guaranteed to get in, but what’s disappointing is some people that registered after us, who we told about the event, did not get cancelled.”
Bratman hopes everyone understands etc. and I am certain they will but a quick question for you. Have you ever heard of any of the headliners? Does that make you feel old and out of it or… something else?

Only thing is you can’t enter it mid season but would love to have you and whoever on here is interested join next year. It shits on the WSL version so if enough are keen we could even start our own Gritters Club which would be mental and fun as fuck

talking to a dude yesterday who brought up the old contests (if you can call them that), at Stone Steps, where you had to drink a 32 ounce resin-bucket full of beer before each heat….
yhere used to be a comp on Philip Island called the iron man series…before each heat , you had to scull a 1/2 litre of beer….then eat something like raw anchovies/fish…..surf , and each heat repeat and then ….there was the Boot…which was a glass boot that held about 3/4’s of a gallong and you had to scull before you got your trophy….it wasn’t about the surfer…it was about having delerious macho fun!
