"I couldn't figure out why he was acting vindictively against us. It seemed like it was targeted towards us."
I’m of the school where surfing should be split from fashion. Utility over branding. But there’s something gorgeous about a well-worn pair of classic Vans with grayed laces limp down the sides, white rubber peeling, frayed holes on the outside edges.
Things are worse on the inside.
Vans’ “Ambassador of Fun” Steve Van Doren, baby of founder Paul, announced that the canvas company made an innocent mistake in the marketing of their hyped collab with Fugazi and would be pulling the plug on the new shoe release.
But which Fugazi, you say? The storied West Hollywood boutique-café that opened its pop-up shop in 2024 or that little 90’s four-piece ensemble managing to sell a slight six million records.
Widespread outrage took over as music lovers and the band took to the keys, demanding that Vans burn, Burn! for their capitalist rapacity.
Fugazi drummer Brendan Canty blasted both the clothing company and Van Doren.
“There’s this horrendous fashion company called Fugazi that’s been around... The way that the guy held up the ‘Fugazi’ registered trademark, the guy from Vans… I couldn’t figure out why he was acting vindictively against us. It seemed like it was targeted towards us, and kind of felt like a corporate mule.”
Ouch.
“I was hurt by it, honestly… I was like, ‘Why is Vans doing this?’ I thought they were kind of like on the side of the angels, you know? But I guess not. It’s so tone deaf… people are equally confused by it out in the world, to the point where [they’re] confused and disgusted by it.”
Frontman Ian McKaye soberly added, “We have nothing to do with this, to be clear. I’m guessing someone from Vans will reach out to us.”
Soon after the online eruption, Van Doren posted,
“Sorry for any confusion this past week. Fugazi the Band and Fugazi the clothing Brand are not connected. I have deep respect for Ian MacKaye, his impact on music and his connection to skateboarding. We spoke this morning and are looking at ways to support longtime skateboarders and giving back to the communities we both care deeply about.”
I tried to get more juice out of Ian. He wouldn’t address any conversation between him and Van Doren but certainly was aware of “the online furor” Vans apparent deception created.
Because of said furor, Vans announced it was 86’ing the collaboration.
Good. Good, you say. Good you say because the band Fugazi stood for nose-up anti-commercialism and dogged bloody-knuckles DIY independence. Be gone, damn-ed shoe, forever into the fire.
But let our naïveté interfere with the reality of big-biness.
Rather than destroying or donating the shoes, the fashion brand Fugazi decided to sell off its Vans collab stock. The shoes are selling for five bucks this week in their NY and LA stores, a not-so-subtle slap in the beanie to McKaye’s well-known policy of charging only five to attend the band’s shows.
Even if Van Doren’s explanation of simple mistaken identity is to be believed, the company’s reputation still took a hit, one that can slim be afforded.
The company, birthed in 1966, has been passed around like a foster child over the last twenty years. Following bankruptcy in the mid-‘80’s, papa Paul Van Doren and partners sold the company to an investment firm who, in 2004, sold it to fashion giant VF Corporation. Sales peaked in 2012 at 4 bills but soon after tumbled, driving down VF stock prices. Downsizing and layoffs and 140 stores shut. And the Gudauskas boys? Left standing on the street, skin to concrete, barefoot and crying.
Many consider Van Doren’s collaboration an honest mistake and are willing to overlook the error of judgement. After all, the guy’s an insider, responsible for building the Vans Pool Party, one of the great skate contest series in the last twenty years, giving opportunity for generations of legends to skate together: Hosoi and Cab mixing in with Schaar and Greyson, all properly rocking the well. Steve typically flips burgers and dogs on the grill.
Still, the shoe once considered de rigueur in the surf world now has become an early warning sign of low-T. There’s nothing more embarrassing than a middle-aged man shuffling around in a pair of checkered slip-ons. Considering the demographics of our wrinkling group, Sketchers might be a better fit.
But the bigger question: Do you pull on a pair of Vans after a surf? Miserable, yes?

Saw Fugazi a bunch through the 90s in NYC, Philly, and NJ. Always a tight, mistake-free, mind-blowing show.
On another note… what’s next in these absurd times?…
An Ugg Boot-Dead Kennedys collab?
Begs the question: what are the right shoes for an older (not old) gentleman to wear in place of Vans and Sketchers?
I currently have timberland chukkas on my feet and feel confident
Vans until I die but the Adidas and New Balance skate shoes are comfy too.
To answer the question Chas I have owned one pair of Vans and they were uncomfortable and overpriced. Never heard of the band Fugazi but just remember the word from Italian gangster movies, Donny Brasco mainly if I remember correctly and think it means fake? This might explain why I give zero fucks about either?
I got a new pair (last summer) of Rowley’s with pop cush soles. Comfy AF. Had some real bad ones though too. Ya gotta get the pop cush or ultra cush otherwise they are trash.
I’m tempted to get the Ultras for mtb bike but heard they fall apart quick
I believe it. Probably depends on how hard ya go.
Isn’t cush spelled with a K?
Please tell me you’ve never owned or worn a pair of those checkered, slip on monstrosities Bond cuz it may well end our beautiful friendship
I Sean Connery solemnly swears that I have never owned or worn a pair of those checkered, slip on monstrosoties and this includes associating with someone else who wears them. Amen.
Wonderful news 007 and thank you
Storied members below the line here must remember the times Fugazi’s own Guy Picciotto commented on a few BG articles.
But yeah, fuck Vans trying to co opt one of the most staunchly anti corpo bands to ever exist.
Let’s mark the occasion with one of the all time captured live fugazi performances from the doco Instrument mentioned by Pauly below (which I just yesterday found my dvd copy of in the garage)
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=OgI1OPcJxG8&pp=ygUUZnVnYXppIGdsdWUgbWFuIGxpdmU%3D
Such a great film. Never saw Fugazi live, what with being a youngster in a deprived part of the world. Saw the Evens (Ian and partner Amy) once, which was very excellent, and Messthetics (Joe and Brendan), which wasn’t very good, but worth it to watch Brendan drum. If you haven’t checked out Ian, Amy and Joe’s current band, Coriky, I recommend a listen.
Who saw Fugazi live? Make me jealous with a review.
Yeah likewise a bit before my time, also saw the Evens when they toured in aught seven or whenever it was. My brothers saw them play at morrow park bowlo in newy (rip) would have been so good
With Shellac? I know they toured here with them once. Would’ve been a barnburner.
no label, no merch. 5 bucks a ticket, a thousand people outside trying to get in. they were so indy they were corporate. they turned down 10 mil from Atlantic.
Saw them a bunch in the 90’s as I ranted above. You couldn’t find a tighter-playing, more mind-blowing, unapologetic to idiots in the crowd, live “post-punk-hardcore” show than Fugazi during that era. The VF Corporation is not worthy of being anywhere near them.
Faaaaark me surfads this is truly awful and I wouldn’t even go and see them live if they were playing in my toilet. In fact I would shut the door and lock em in there in the hope that would shut em up
Agreed, fuken horrible noise,
If you saw them in person it would translate and you would be awestruck I am quite sure.
Xox
Agree.
definitely had to be there, much better live than recorded
Hard agree. I saw them live twice. They were phenomenally tight band and just destroyed. They were also a very good example of why the interplay between the drummer and bass player is fundamental for any live band to be decent. The red medicine tour in ‘97 is easily one of the best gigs I’ve ever been too.
Just not my thing at all mate, sounds fucking hideous to me
I once saw a screening of Instrument, a Fugazi documentary, after which Guy Picciotto from the band did a Q&A. I was drunk and can’t remember why, but was yelling from the back of the room that something was racist. From all reports it sounded like I was chastising Guy for being racist, but it either got lost in inebriation translation or I was making some kind of misguided joke. Anyways, my buddy hurriedly ushered me out and I have felt shame about it ever since. Sorry, Guy.
Free Palestine
Would it have killed them to put an arch in those fucking shoes?
what a perfect Fugazi song with perfect lyrics to describe Vans in 2026… sadly…
All I care about ATM is getting a root and seeing italo lose…in that order
anal to mouth? Deeks you nasty man.
She’d have to be pretty feral for me not to give her a good rimming
atta boy
This is a well heeled publicity stunt thought of well in advance, if we are using puns, I drunkenly suggest.

BUT do you still wear Vans?
nope. the go to shoes were buster browns and went thru several pairs cause riding a skateboard sitting down required some serious brakes~
Speaking of corp mules, lets not lose focus on the the greatest ever, greatest human thing ever, the elite human surfee super league!!!
The timing couldn’t be more perfect, as the AFL mens shed mules (affiliated with the swillnut club menz shed (rocked by their own swillnutty stalking, guilty as charged expose… no, not the infamous Dandy Markets stalking saga… but… an internal, agin’ but… stalking… swillnutty outburst… leading to ‘sanctions’) mules) spiral into total oblivion, leaving the perfect void to be filled by surfee mules!!!
And obviously, the highly competitive webby operators, gritters, swillnuts, linerz, savagely clawing for their moment of caching glory, will each be fielding surfee super league squadrons as well!
Fantasy team rider longy/free/tom tom the corn beef in the sandwich, about to be minced in the grinder… torn between…
It’s the jetfuel costs I’d imagine. They don’t want a bar of j. Bay
Welcome back ya racist cunt. Let’s gooo
The demographic here would suit moccasins. The ones The skinheads wore.
The CEO of Vans isn’t worthy to hold out a cupped hand for Ian McKaye to shit in.
Hahaha! Yes!
