It’s been two months since the surfer and celebrated artist Amira Hasib convincingly argued online for the removal of white men from all surf lineups following an accident with one of the devils in the surf, white privilege leaking the hell everywhere.
In another post, Hasib highlighted Bali’s extreme racism, a hitherto unexplored cultural component of that pretty Hindu island.
“I would cry on the water, on the beach or on way home after every session,” Hasib writes. “The bullying and intimidation tactics were too much. The fact that women were in on it made it even worse because surfing is already a boys club.”
Pointedly, “They was bullying me BAD in Uluwatu.”
Now, Hasib has turned her lens onto beginner surfers, something she was two years ago, but has now vaulted into the upper realms of the sport, purple of even brown belt level though still some way short of the mastery of the black belt.
“You should not fucking surf if you don’t have fucking manners. I have two prime examples. As I’m riding this wave, this girl paddles and tries to catch the wave while I’m on it. I’m telling her to get off as I’m riding it. It was a nice wave. I was not giving that up to somebody on a foamie. Hell no. Also, I had right of way.
“I’m on the wave and she goes straight onto my board, and we both go down. I come up from underwater, and so does she, and I’m just like, ‘Don’t do that.’ And I said it nicely. ‘When somebody’s on the wave, just don’t go for it, because that’s how you get hurt.’ She’s just looking at me.
“This happens all the fucking time. People make mistakes like that, and not just with me. I’ve watched them do it to other people. They cause accidents and don’t even say sorry. They just look at you like it’s okay because they’re a beginner.
“What people don’t understand is surfing is an extreme sport. That means you can die. When you collide like that, that’s a fin through your face. A fin can slice through your body. You might think the biggest threat in surfing is wiping out. It is a threat, but it’s not the only way people get hurt. People who have surfed their entire lives have died in the sport, or suffered really crazy injuries because of other people’s mistakes.
“There are two types of beginners. The first is the one I just described, the type you don’t want to fuck with: a fucking idiot with no manners.
“The second type: another girl bumped into me and she was immediately apologetic. She’s like, ‘I’m so sorry,’ and I’m like, ‘Girl, it’s okay.’ And she says, ‘I just don’t know how to turn.’ I’m not saying you need to be crazy apologetic, ‘I’m so sorry, wow, wow, wow.’ She was just like, ‘I don’t know how to turn.’ So I told her, ‘If you want to turn, it’s really easy.’ She also asked, if she sees somebody on a wave, is it best to jump off?
“It’s not that you can never make a mistake. It’s that she checked in and asked what she could do better next time. That’s the type of person I feel is going to do well at surfing.
“Some people just fall in love with the aesthetic. They’ve got the gear, a rash guard, a sun hat, and they think they automatically get super shredder surfer powers. But in reality, they’re wreaking havoc on the lineup. They’re not aware of what’s going on around them. You have to have situational awareness. You have to see who’s around you and what’s going on around you. The ocean is so unpredictable.
“There are so many people who overestimate themselves. I’ve seen so many guys on shortboards making really crazy rookie mistakes. They’re putting themselves and other people in danger, causing accidents in the lineup, ruining everybody’s session, and they’re not even aware of it.
“You don’t want to be the person in the lineup nobody wants to be around. If you can’t pay attention to what’s going on around you in real life, on solid ground, don’t surf. You’re going to end up severely fucking hurt, severely traumatized, or you’re going to do it to somebody else.
“In real life, if you accidentally bump into somebody or trip over them, don’t you check they’re okay? Don’t you say sorry? Some people are teachable. With others, you just know they’re not made for this.”
