"I really believe that the perfect curve is growing up in a small town and then going out into the bigger world."
Florida surf lives near the bottom of the global swell totem pole.
Check that — it is at the bottom.
Sure, you’ve got your occasional bangers when spots like Reef Road, or RC’s, or Pumphouse light up.
But generally speaking, Florida surf rats survive on short period windswell slop and the occasional hurricane or cold front groundswell.
Maybe because of that, or maybe because of something in the water, we Floridians (by birth, at least) take a special pride in sending it around the world.
And we take notice when one of our own do the same.
Still today, looking back at that wave gives me chills.
As CJ springs to his feet, it seems impossible that he’ll make it to the bottom.
Pause the clip halfway down and his board is fully vertical, the wave already inverted, the lip pitching over his head.
Somehow, he wrangles the drop, his fins catch, and he pulls up into a full steeze stance in what, at that time, was possibly the greatest paddle-in barrel at Chopes ever caught on film.
I’ve watched a lot of Florida surfers in my day.
But that wave, and CJ’s reckless disdain for his own skin in pursuit of an epic barrel, filled me with a kind of pride and joy I’ve rarely experienced.
Sure, people can talk shit about Florida waves — but they can never, ever, throw shade at the surfers who ride them. CJ and his brother Damien and all the other Florida chargers before and since have made that truth certain.
So it was with no little trepidation that I reached out to CJ a day or so ago for a chat about growing up in the Sunshine State and what it meant to him to have FL permanently etched next to his name.
As I’ve said repeatedly here, I’m no one — not a surf industry guy, not a surfer anyone would know, just a random dude who became obsessed with waves as a Florida grom.
And CJ is the furthest thing from that, save the Florida grom part.
A world title holder, a best wave at Chopes ever guy, a dude well into his third act as a hotshot Space Coast real estate mogul worthy of the best of Derek’s Real Estate Grit posts — why would a legit FL legend care to respond to a cold text from a 757 number he’d never seen?
You’d have to ask him that question — because he did, and we talked in and around him picking up a kid from tennis.
Turns out he’s as much a legend in real life as that guy I saw dropping into a Tahiti saltwater avalanche 20 years ago.
In classic Florida fan boy style, I wasted a fair bit of our conversation reminiscing about bygone days at far flung east coast hot spots.
But I won’t waste your time here with a bunch of my own excess verbiage around what CJ managed to fit in during the moments I paused for a breath —needless to say, his thoughts need no commentary.
On spots he remembers surfing as a Florida grom: “I really remember RC’s the most, and guys like Justin Carver, Sam Barker and John Homan. I remember watching them and thinking that was what great surfing was.
“And I remember seeing Kelly for the first time out at RC’s.
“I also remember surfing Monster Hole, and it being the kind of wave you could believe you would surf in places like Fiji. It wasn’t really the equivalent of Restaurants, but on the right kind of day you could imagine it being similar.
“I remember catching Stuart Rocks really good,* and some places further south like Lake Worth.
And of course spots like the Inlet and Spanish House.”
On charging heavy water as a Florida surfer and whether taking off on short period windswell barrels was any kind of prep for ledging reef breaks: “Maybe there’s something to [growing up in a surf environment that prized quick pop ups].
“But I really think it’s like that saying, ‘necessity is the mother of invention.’
“Here you are in a dreamlike situation with these amazing waves — it’s such a great motivator.
“Getting to surf waves like that at home in Florida was not an option, so you had no choice but to figure it out and send it if you wanted to surf those beautiful waves.”
On the moment he knew he could make it as a pro surfer: “Yeah, I vividly remember that moment. I was 17 years old and had just come in from a surf. I had this hose and was spraying water on my head, and I just had this moment. It dawned on me.
“My dad walked out and I said, ‘Dad, you know what, I think I can make it as a pro surfer.’ And my Dad said, ‘really, you think so?’
“And I said, ‘Yeah, I think I can. Andy and Bruce are above me [in my generation], but after that who else is there?’
“Before I had that moment, my back up was a boat man on Tavarua or maybe after that a sales rep for one of the surf brands. But that was the exact moment when I realized I could do it.”
On his years of hard work getting Salty Crew off the ground: “These days I’m just the shake hands/kiss the babies guy. I’ll go on trips and stuff like that.
“But for 7 or 8 years I worked really hard and did the grind. If you weren’t deep in the surf industry you probably didn’t ever realize how much I was working. I didn’t go out in public and talk about it.
“I hear some of these guys on the podcasts and wherever talking about the years of hard work, and I think, ‘yeah, I know it.’ But I didn’t talk about it the same way.
“And when I see or hear some of the negativity out there from some well-known names in the surf industry, I just think, ‘can’t you just post a photo of some good waves, why do you have to be so negative?’”
On Kelly and that bananas wave at Teahupoo: “You know, it just goes to show that as you get older the last thing that goes is your barrel riding.”
[Some random effusiveness from yours truly about Kelly’s wave omitted].
On the absence of Florida surfers on today’s WCT after Kelly and the Lopez brothers and he and Damo had it on lock for so many years: “Yeah, there’s really only Caroline Marks holding it down for the guys and girls. And nobody on the horizon. I’m not sure why.
“I do know that you have to be really committed to getting better all the time during that period from like 22 to 25 years old. And you can’t really take a year off and then come back because the judges look at you and think, ‘yeah, we already saw that last year.’”
On whether he wished he had grown up somewhere other than FL: “Maybe to a fault, I really believe that the perfect curve is growing up in a small town and then going out into the bigger world.
“You gotta get out, but then you always come back, they all come back.
“And now I’m really living the best life imaginable. I live across the street from the ocean, travel a lot, love my family.
“You know, if I didn’t grow up where I did, who knows whether I would have had all of it.”
Like I said, legend.
*Shameless plug: Stuart Rocks is the spot referenced in your guy Rocks Local’s avatar.

CJ is a good man and well deserved world champ. John Homan – It’s Holeman and he got a cover on one of the main mags surer/surfing – forgot which but have it in a box somewhere. Dude just quietly went out there and ripped the bag out of everything. I recall surfing the Hole with the boys and CJ with just the perfect, crisp line from bottom turn to just crushing it at the most perfect spot in the pocket – I’ll never forget. It was a learning moment to see world class surfing up close like that as I was trying to make my way in surf.

Thx for the edit , tried to confirm the spelling online but obv struck out
Great story
Have you heard Hunter commentate over the years at various contests?
No worries. Just wanted to give John the respect he deserves. Most have never heard of him – he was never a ‘look at me’ guy. But his surfing was world class.
is that Hunter? If so, I Heard him commentate for 3 days, amd hung out with him before the event, at the Independence Pro in Soup Bowl in ‘99. He was funny. A proper character.
Strider Wasilewski pulled through and Hunter wondered aloud what the heck was HE doing there. I thought that a bit strange as there were quite a few pros around, although almost all of them were east coast. Some of the best surfing I’ve seen up close and personal, including by some of the barbadian locals.
Edit: I just rewinded and it is Hunter. I haven’t seen him or heard his voice in 27 years and recognised him immediately, despite me being a teenager at the time.
Yup – aka mouth of the south. He’ll occasionally come down and surf the backyard with us when his sandbar is not good.
but can he get me out of pmi ??
Tell them, Boggie. These old heads don’t understand SoCal mental health and aspirational manifestation.
They’ve probably never even seen The Secret movie adaptation of the best-selling book. Weak.

Also watching the trials/pro warm up show. Enjoying the loose relaxed booth, but losing one IQ point every five minutes
The big board thing at Blacks kind of confuses me, maybe the most over-gunned surf spot in the world? 8’6 mini guns when biggest sets DOH at drop and head and a half after that
knew a guy once who said he was a blacks local – but grew up in Vegas. Bet he had an 8-6.
my 1st grader obsessed with baseball so always on my mind – he’s 6 and (literally) says stuff like , ‘hey dad, w/ a man on first and less than two outs you should steal second to take out the double play’ , lol
the brushback pitch before the coffee even has a chance to simmer !
ha , that mustache thing can go either way !
Happen to be watching the couch surfing show coverage of Trestles trials — i welcome your judgement — and a couch guest (Nate Yeomas) mentioned that the Colapintos and Cole H had an event last night where THEY GAVE THE LOCAL GROMS JOURNALS AND TOLD THEM TO WRITE DOWN THEIR DREAMS. What in the fuck, surfing.
my dream is to surf like Nate Yeomans – have become reacquainted w/ his work during this swell , he’s still a demon
hadn’t heard the name in awhile. does indeed rip.
Ke11y’s daughter is an artist. This is her new song. This is pop music in 2026.
I figure this tune is will definitely be on the next Former surf film
That was great Rocks! Thanks. CJ, Damien…..and Bobby have always been three of my favorite goofy foots. I would have love to have been a fly on the wall for some of the effusiveness.
thx SC , that’s definitely my list too … it was a fun conversation – although I was so locked in on the FL stuff and not eating up too much of his day that after the call I thought of 15 more things I wished I had asked, ha
Alright fine I’ll watch and two if by sea again
Keeping on topic, best lives ever… and stuff.
Wot else could go…?
Nicky Cage, the guy that threw surfin’ into the big time, the guy that finally broke the drought, that finally got eyes on screens, that finally showed the rest of the planet wot they were missing out on, literally goes down the mine!
They say things happen in threes, wot about fours, and sixes?
Then the other Nicky Cage style, self annointed voice of surfing went absolutely bunter, off his rocker… again!!! Stupe’ nuttle’ turned on a fellow, subscripted, highly strung, hysterical swillnut member, (no, thankfully not secret agent free/longy/tom tom… for now…) publically lambasting and outing him as, quote, ‘an idiot’!!! Literally belting a fellow swillnut for six! Sending the highly strung ‘idiot’ into even worse swillnut hysteria!!!
No wonder brutus…
But, yes, CJ Hobgood shredded, but, best, elite lives and stuff… pay attention…
Next thing, instead of stokin’ the airwaves, the one and only stoked bloke doused the flames of, of, with a horrific, bad newz tale of woe! He moved his arm, and the mighty, stoked limb imploded! Rendering him useless!
https://youtube.com/shorts/IdZoyzZTeaU?si=vB7C8J7qGK0H-8qU
Horrifically, this all too common saga, the swillnut anthem, has become synonomous with gritters! Post after post of teeth gritted tales of crumpling, mangling, tweaking, tearing, pinging, ponging, inflaming, breaking, popping, impinging, delapidating, atrophying… failing… physiques!!! I’m trained and super experienced at decifering the accompanying tales. They start to change over time, usually gravitating to amazing feats of… and foamballs and stuff… Just looking at them is enough to tell me plenty.
Again, free/longy/tom tom will attest!!! I tried to warn them, the swillnuts, God knows I tried… and tried… and tried…
A few actually listened, including secret agent free/longy tom tom. So he can still move. I have over 50 years of in depth, in the trenches, professional experience. Barton? ‘Accident’ waiting to happen. Wot arm? Wot shoulder? A straw in a teacup. I’d be more shocked that it didn’t happen sooner. Not much to see, literally, is there. They’ll do well to hook the Hubble telescope up to the mri to get a good look at it.
Anyway, there’s these things called muscles. And their attachments. They are what holds everything together. And moves everything. So you better have plenty, in tip top condition.
And in this day and age of swillnuts, and info dreamers, and googlespurts, vlogs, blogs, flogs,… Here’s something I did to stir up an info dreamer getting carried away, a relly of a couple of my clients. Think about it, deeply. The lions, hyenas, wild dogs, etc, etc. ‘Oye, ang on, juzz giv uz a minet ta warme upp…’ So I, 67 then, a few years ago, just before I retired professionally, challenged him to do this, cold. About 170kg. In winter too, around 10pm. The critical point deadlifting is all down low, for obvious reasons, if you, well if you genuinely know, plus its basic engineering and physics. It pays to be ‘strong’, ‘fit’, there. So, narrow stance, longer range of motion, more flexibility needed, more structure involved, worse leverage, harder. Years of going deep. Equals fitter. No momentum, harder. Accentuating the neg portion, pausing at the very bottom, same. No straps, get a grip. He wouldn’t try, because he knew, deep down… Don’t try this at home. And I only use youtube, have a channel, because its too hard sending vids to friends or clients, or posting them anywhere, any other way. The easist way is just upload it and get a link.
https://youtube.com/shorts/0UxsbxfPzYs?si=-9VDGyXnKm3Uubrv
Anyway, regarding best lives and stuff, muscles, or injarees, its a choice. And never too late to choose and become a gun in either. You’d think that muscles are a stoked blokes besty!!!
good advice for all ages !

Oh oh oh oh oh oh…you don’t have to go…oh oh oh oh…
Ockers getting some “real” football played on their turf tomorrow.😅
Football name is a bit misleading though.
“Football, that will be played with our hands…”
Lots of your fans floating around here the past week or so.
All dressed up in their fancy costumes…
The field is tiny because they would all fall over after 15 seconds of sustained non-stop running…

get yourself to a proper USA football event , big college game or one of the NFL stadiums that really goes off (arrowhead, Lambeau, Philly if you’re into getting your ass kicked by random strangers) … you’ll become a believer !!
First time in 170 years that a real contact sport was played in this stadium
This is how a proper cunt breeds ANGER
Haha, of the 3 x egg ball games in Oz, this one is by far the softest. AFL players couldn’t punch their way out of a wet paper bag. Tony Lockett and Barry Hall the exceptions as they appeared to be born for rugby union/league but forced to play AFL
Look, I agree, but it give some tiny cunts a chance that are not 6 foot+ an built like a brick shithouse.
Instead of this…

It becomes kind of a joke in some sports
https://uploads.disquscdn.c…
Is that real?
Yeah , but this was ages ago , guy was unplayable he was so slow
And the other guy was almost unplayable, he was so fast 🙂
truth
Fuck this coming at you
https://uploads.disquscdn.c…
Or this cunt
It’s “hairstyles and umpires” these days
DR has probably watched this a few times, getting sweaty himself.
The oldest stadium that an NFL game has ever been played in. First built in 1853
Good shit Rocky, nicely done, especially to snaggle a talk with a genuine star like Cliffy.
(presumably you didn’t mention BeachGrit)
One small question though.
At the end you say Stuart Rocks is the spot referenced in your guy Rocks Local’s avatar.
So it’s a leafy pond that Moose hang out at ?
Thx bb , and lol , the moose didn’t surf , not sure why I used that pic !! I guess avatar was wrong , maybe pseudonym??
So the actual two words of your pseudonym (fictitious writing name, for those that say ‘avi’) ‘Rocks Local’ is about a leafy pond that Moose hang out at ?
Is it a ‘Rocky & Bullwinkle’ reference ?
Plus I didn’t realise there were Moose in Florida.
Must be a good food source for all the Alligators…
Rocky Mountains / rocky reef breaks , all the wonders of Mother Earth !
Excellent read and Florida seems like a really interesting State.
I am sure some of you have heard about Grand Theft Auto 6, unless you live under a rock like I do.
It is set in “Florida”, and looks pretty fuckn crazy.
