Over the course of the past year and one half, BeachGrit has assiduously covered the Lady Gaga vs Matt Biolos lawsuit where, a David vs Goliath scenario where the noted surfboard shaper sued chanteuse Gaga for using a stylised Mayhem logo on her tour merch.
As Chas Smith reported in early 2025,
I’m no great legal mind, but imagine the surfboard company has a very strong case. Contrary to popular opinion, there is no “has-to-be-30%-different” rule when it comes to infringement. Each is examined on a case-by-case basis as it relates to similarities. To be quite honest, I always thought Biolos and crew sampled their “Mayhem” from Motley Crue drummer Tommy Lee’s belly but the two marks are certainly unique.
Anyway, Gaga won and Biolos has to pay a quarter mill in costs.
Now, Biolos’ legion of bolted-on fans, surfers who’ve been hooked by the San Clemente shaper’s easy-to-ride surfboards with catchy names such as The Griffin, are going toe to toe with Lady Gaga’s own fan base, the notorious Little Monsters.

I’m a Gaga fan and as soon as I saw her Mayhem logo I thought she had a deal with the surf company Lost, I own their boards and skateboards…

Interestingly, the comments devolve into a Palestine, Israel thing, with Biolos painted as pro-Palestinian and Gaga as the evil Zionist.
Now, I ain’t that close to Biolos anymore, sadly, the tone of our coverage skewing against the shaper due, I think, to Com Turren’s dislike of Biolos’ centre-right politics, but I can guess he ain’t a pro-Pally queen.

Absolutely. The only tragedies I heard about were local news and big national and world news – think local robbery, the Challenger explosion, Falklands war, etc. I was not bombarded daily with every child abduction and murder occurring outside of my community.

We certainly had to interact with other people daily. The other thing I feel was better about the old days is we actually had privacy. My parents were the “get out of here but be home when the street lights turn on” stereotype. They had no idea what I was doing or where I went. Why cunts from round here ride boards designed for Slo Cal burgers is completely lost on me. My boards went fucked over there cuz the waves are so soft and you’re heaps heavier wearing a wetty so surely the reverse is true when Seppos come down here and the waves are faster and suckier and your just in boardies most of the time?

Yep, a proper experienced local craftsman will provide the average bloke with a better, more genuine development of your surfing than following along with the latest thing that the ‘pros’ have.
The facts are all the proper breakthroughs in surfboard design happened between the late 1960’s and early 1980’s by top surfers who developed and built their own equipment.
(most stuff which has dominated the market place since has just been conservative versions sold by businessmen to the easily influenced)

Beefy when I was younger I had a mate who was sponnoed by DHD give me an old board of Micks and said I could give it a go. Waves were cooking, 5feet pumping drainers, I was mid twenties and in fine condition and surfing nearly every day and half OK and deadset it was the only board Ive ever ridden that felt completely dead to me. It was like a learner driver trying to drive a Ferrari.
These days cunts who can barely stand up watch SITD with pro surfers who rip the absolute shit out of it and base their board purchases on it and other complete wank they read about online or hear about off their other kook mates. It’s fucking insanity and why I refuse to talk about boards or shapers or any of that wank online. Leave your egos at the door, work with a good local shaper and your enjoyment and bank balance will soar

You have no insight into my board buying experience. I’m not buying anything because of Stan in the dark. I don’t have any world class shapers living near me. I’m not even on Facebook to find a decent selection of second hand boards.
I bought a Lost in Indo because it was the only board available that suited me in the one horse town . And it was pre-snapped and cost $100 and it still went absolutely insane.
When I finally snapped it on a return trip to Indo I replaced it with another Lost off the rack from Uluwatu. It too went insane. Still does but it is under volumed for when I’m surfing in a steamer around here.
I’d love to have the access to boards that you have up there…..but then I’d also have the crowds thst you do. So I’ll just keep struggling to find good boards.

I had one of the Mick models with fcs 1’s and it was mental. I saved it to surf our fickle point when it was on and mainly at full moon to dodge all the fuckwits. I always knew I would come out of the tube fast and away from the rocks. It lifted under my feet incredibly too.
