Over the course of the past year and one half, BeachGrit has assiduously covered the Lady Gaga vs Matt Biolos lawsuit where, a David vs Goliath scenario where the noted surfboard shaper sued chanteuse Gaga for using a stylised Mayhem logo on her tour merch.
As Chas Smith reported in early 2025,
I’m no great legal mind, but imagine the surfboard company has a very strong case. Contrary to popular opinion, there is no “has-to-be-30%-different” rule when it comes to infringement. Each is examined on a case-by-case basis as it relates to similarities. To be quite honest, I always thought Biolos and crew sampled their “Mayhem” from Motley Crue drummer Tommy Lee’s belly but the two marks are certainly unique.
Anyway, Gaga won and Biolos has to pay a quarter mill in costs.
Now, Biolos’ legion of bolted-on fans, surfers who’ve been hooked by the San Clemente shaper’s easy-to-ride surfboards with catchy names such as The Griffin, are going toe to toe with Lady Gaga’s own fan base, the notorious Little Monsters.

I’m a Gaga fan and as soon as I saw her Mayhem logo I thought she had a deal with the surf company Lost, I own their boards and skateboards…

The Mayhem album logo does look like a DIRECT RIP OFF of their Mayhem logo.

I call her Google Gaga her team spend hours surfing the net to steal from other artists ideas and concepts to create her next project ! And you naive followers believe she is an original act! She literally changed the logo when she was on tour bc of this, she loses a brand that was very special for the era, so she must be repaid
Interestingly, the comments devolve into a Palestine, Israel thing, with Biolos painted as pro-Palestinian and Gaga as the evil Zionist.
Now, I ain’t that close to Biolos anymore, sadly, the tone of our coverage skewing against the shaper due, I think, to Com Turren’s dislike of Biolos’ centre-right politics, but I can guess he ain’t a pro-Pally queen.
