The five hundred clicks of coastline between Pacific Palms and Byron Bay is about as perfect as it gets, green-water sandbottom points, hidden coves, breakwall ledges, empty beachbreaks and all in bath-tub warm water glistening under a sub-tropical sun.
As you know, howevs, it all started to go to hell a little over a decade ago when the Great White shark, once a rarity in these waters started eatin’ limbs and bull sharks, always around but never in enough numbers to create any great behavioural shifts, started behaving like Great Whites, hitting from below etc.
Last January, five shark attacks in 48 hours, all of em bulls, put em firmly on everyone’s radar.
Now, the Newcastle-based shark hitman, Joel Nancarrow, who predicted the last run of attacks, has posted a warning to swimmers and surfers saying, well, baby, they back.
The current has pushed in and it’s roaring right past Moreton bay in Qld, this is what I look for to signal the beginning of the bullshark season!!
Unfortunately all the northern signal stations are also offline on shark smart st the same time, “again”
If your up in these areas, once again (not fear mongering) but just stay aware and try to stick to beaches with drones, the next 4 weeks will be a bit of a high activity time in really close with big bulls.
They ride the current and duck into the rivers to drop their pups, conditions are absolutely perfect for them so just keep an eye out your in northern NSW right down to port Mac over the next month.
What’s interesting to note, I think, is all of the shark intel that matters, from the habits of Great Whites to the migration patterns of bull sharks, is being loosed to the public from a fisherman who don’t mind hitting socials instead of the, what do you wanna call em…experts… employed by the government.
