What are we doing here?
The World Surf League is currently in Portugal for its 10th stop of the season with the semifinals, for both men and women, getting locked in today. Surf fans woke up early, or stayed up late, to live chat the affair on BeachGrit, famous for its open Live Chat forum, and busily clicked the refresh button, on computers and phones hoping for a chance to professional surf talk with friends and enemies alike.
Alas, nothing appeared leaving surf fans glum and glummer.
The website, notable for its ultra-hard surf candy, has posted its Live Chats for many years, now, but last night was dark.
The reason twofold:
- Derek Rielly fell asleep before he could press “publish.”
- It was decided, afterward, that the World Surf League needs a little boycotting anyhow.
The biggest scandal to rock surfing’s highest competitive echelon blew right open just a few weeks ago. Mexico’s Al Cleland Jr., was suspended from the league following allegations of sexual assault in Tahiti. Though the WSL didn’t name him, everyone knew and, apparently, many had known about the incident for months. Cleland Jr’s ex-girlfriend came out later, declaring that the 24-year-old had also abused her as well and a proper reckoning was underway.
Except, keeping to form, the World Surf League stuck its dumb proverbial head straight in the sand and zero mention, not even the most simple, has been made during the Rip Curl Pro Portugal.
Nothing.
Why, therefore, should a league that treats its audience with such disdain be rewarded with viewership?

So its hard to tell from this, are we fucking off the live chats until they give us the low down on what happened or not?
Nothing sends a clearer message than falling asleep forgetting to press ” publish”! You Bastard !.,.,.fck!

White line fever
The Great Aussie Road Trip AKA The Big Lap
The best surf trip in the world ? Maybe.
It’s got the lot – beauty , adventure , variety and the sort of waves that the majority of the world can only dream about.
So what’s stopping you ? Get yourself a vehicle and start driving . It can be that uncomplicated. No need for passports or visas . No up front expense such as an airfare . Just get in your car , drive till you run out of money , do a little work to top up the bank balance then it’s back on the road.
Here’s what you’ll want to take with you when you choose to take that journey of a lifetime :
A Plan – The plan may only extend as far as filling up with fuel and turning the key and that is often the best way to go. But if you want to maximise your wave quality and enjoyment of each area then I’d recommmend an anti clockwise route. Timing as follows :
August /September – North West WA
October / November – South West WA
December – Great Southern WA
January / February – SA
March – Tasmania
April / may – East coast
June/ July – Top end
Transport – Of course you’ll need a vehicle . But many people fall into the trap of overestimating the type of vehicle they’ll need. If a car will get you to the next town then it will do. It doesn’t have to be a 4wd with diff locks and max trax. It doesn’t have to be shiny or fast or the envy of your mates. As long as it goes OK then it’ll suffice. I’ve seen too many people succumb to inertia and stay at home after wasting time, money and energy waiting / saving for the ultimate touring vehicle. You’ll see the same sights from a $1500 Corolla as you will a Volkswagon Transporter worth $70,000.
Curiosity -Sounds obvious , right ? After all, if you’re on your way then you’re set. Not quite . Too many people get white line fever when they hit the road and turn every day into a challenge to make nominal targets on the map by a certain time or date.
You’re on holidays and you might only be there once. Kick Back , chill and enjoy the journey …all of it, not just your hand picked happy places. Turn off the side roads. You never know what you’ll find. Just because a road is marked as the Old Telegraph Station , doesn’t mean that there won’t be pumping waves nearby !
Shelter – Accomodation in Australia is fucking expensive. And it’s an expense you don’t need to expose yourself to .A car that you can sleep in is a bonus , but a small dome tent or a swag will more than suffice. Take side roads just before dark and set up a little free camp , light a fire and enjoy the remoteness. In the morning you’ll be surrounded by nature and you’ll feel energised . And the money you save on accomodation can always buy a goon bag to help send you on your way to a good nights sleep.
Worth indulging in a nice place every now and again as some accomodation is exclusive to an area or too nice to pass up. Though after free camping for a while you will feel violated paying for a place to sleep no matter how flash.
Music – Its a big country with a lot of extended road hours between places. You will need lots of good music with a lot of variety to suit the changing landscape.
Marijuana – See above. Not essential , but highly recommended . Can change the colour of your day when you’re staring at 10 hours of dead straight road.
Fishing rod – Free food , great fun and an excuse to explore the coast.
Universal tap handle – Australia’s local councils and our national parks have decided in their infinite wisdom to deny travellers water by removing the handles to all public taps. BYO tap handle to sake that thirst and stick it to the man.
Sense of humour- Things will go wrong. That is a guarantee. React well. Don’t be the guy at the remote servo fighting with his missus because the parts required to repair their car will take 3 days to arrive. Don’t whine about the heat / flies / onshore winds. Go with the flow and have a laugh. Break out the mull and the goon bag if that’s what it takes to get back into the pursuit of happiness.
A Smile – Lets face it . Not everyone you meet is going to be a long lost best mate. Humour people their eccentricities. Often the best experiences are gifted by locals willing to show you their home towns hidden gems. A smile and a friendly attitude is your passport to good times.
Water and fuel – Australia is large and oftentimes you’ll be a long way from help. Take twice as much fuel and four times as much water as you think you’ll need.
A headlamp – Best piece of camping equipment of the last couple of decades.
Basic medical and tool kits – Sometimes there’s no option but to fix things yourself. It may be yourself that needs fixing. Be prepared.
Varied quiver of boards – Of course one board will do. But for best results you’ll want a groveller , a shorty and a proper gun. These should cover most situations.
Someone to share the memories with – Solo travel is awesome and will probably lead to the most unexpected detours. But it’s always nice to have someone to paddle out with at an empty , secret reef that’s at the top end of your abilities and shared adventures are memories set in gold.
And that’s it. That’s all you need.
Now go !!
How much is gas over there again?🤣
The thing is ….it usually pays to zig when everyone else zags. The price of fuel will probably put many people off travelling by car. Sounds to me like the perfect chance to chase remote waves.
If you can camp most of the time the money you save in lodging alone justifies the gas, catch some fish and eat simple even cheaper.
Doesn’t sound like a bad trip.
Australia has the second best waves on Earth and is probably the best overall surf trip you’ll ever take. There’s still A++ waves that most people don’t know exist …including most Aussies,
An independent, rollicking wave hunt ranging from the Barrier reef down and around the continent and up to the NorWest of is unrivalled for variety and fun. And you may as well join the dots and see the top end whilst you’re at it.
Ot takes months and it won’t be cheap but it’s awe inspiring, formative and unforgettable.
Add a syphon pump to that list when you need to borrow a few gallons/liters of fuel from the friendly folks.
Why are surfers are always sad?
We’ve already discussed this.
Thats a good idea for video series.
How surfers get sad.
Give them 5 boards to choose from and watch them cry.
My favorite surfer is kanoa, he always happy and so cute. Heehee.
Do you think those blond streaks are natural or saloned?
Suddenly the competitors crying on the podium all makes sense to me.
Making sense isnt usually your thing so, progress, yes?
Who knows the truth really
Latest ‘news’ I’ve seen on-the-line is that it wasn’t the girl who made a complaint to the NSW cops anyway, but was her (ex)boyfriend’s father who was pissed off that his son was restrained and had his phone smashed during the alleged incident (who isn’t exactly ‘mates’ with the officially nameless Aussie surfer that was apparently involved too)…
Interesting Beefy. Thing is this is the woz so the truth and facts will never see the light of day
I hear the WSL released a full statement detailing the allegations, and their new roadmap on changing the culture of professional surfing – starting in the commentary booth – but it’s sitting unpublished due to their new wpdisqus account being a glitching pile of shit
lol, comment of the year !!!
It got a full, belly laugh from me. The punchline came out of left field.
same , ha ha
🫶🏻
An oldy but a goody !
still visible on any given day.
Long May It Last !
When was this, I had no idea it was even on?
Sitting at a Vegas airport bar pondering the truth of this message amidst the slot machines and the guy with a $50k Rolex next to me. Concluding the world is a weird fucked up place but at least we can surf regardless of whether the pro tour sells its soul. And with comment-platform-gate 2026 (mostly) behind us , the future is bright btl (lol) !!!
You’re a good man Rocks and thanks for your replies on the last thread. Not in the best head space at the mo with mum still in hozzy and being cooped up at home with me visiting aunt, unable to work cuz of this fucking rain. Have a good one bruz yeeeeeeeeeeeeeeew
All good bro, hope things get better. , went through some crazy health shit with my own mum a few years ago although thankfully she’s bounced back now. All of us just trying to slog through a wild fucked up universe w/ only surfing and true love to give us hope !!
That ‘Rolex’ might be a $50 Bangkok fake.
It is Vegas after all, land of charlatans and shylocks.
Just like the wOsl…
Good point , hard to tell these days. Had the cyclops and the sweeping second hand but could have been a Thai knockoff
The only truth you should seek is a Southwest flight into SNA and a session at Lowers or SanO.
😎
Stab, Tracks, Surfing World, Surfing Life, Surfers Journal, Surfer, (and our dear BeachGrit) et al: who knew what, and when?
with Surfline one can “know before they go”. Namsayin.
Good call, Chas. I had decided that I would go against the grain and bet that it would have been brought up on Day 1. A small part of me thought that I might even be correct. But there was only silence. I can only assume that they have their corporate reasons.
I miss you so much that I’m considering heading over to YouTube to watch you work with your true love; now that you’ve abandoned your former amours for the world of podcasting.
I’m a big Taylor Knox fan so a few weeks ago I listened to your live podcast, from a couple years ago, with Rusty Pseindorfer, Taylor and the big-wave demon from down SD area. Listened while driving up and down the coastline looking for waves. Congrats, as it was quite entertaining and I can see how you tried to bring the comic effect. I wasn’t completely sure but I think that yiur wife even spoke on the microphone, as she was formerly TK’s agent and he had fantastic things to say about her. All around, it was entertaining to hear Rusty, TK and the crazy charger talking shop.
Love the use of the Tank Man photo. I was gonna ask which photo is more iconic between Tank Man and Thích Quảng Đức, the vietnamese monk, but I realised that they’re both 10/10 iconic and are on equal footing in showing absolute resistance against power. Fight the power.
Give tanks and praises! Jahhhhh!
…..rastafari.
Jah.
WSL be bumbaclots
