"A truly gifted surfer with an outrageously overblown ego."
The Hawaiian surf god Larry Bertlemann, a man who “permanently altered the body dynamics of surfing”, has died after complications following a heart attack.
In a statement the family said,
“It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of legendary professional surfer and local artist Larry Bertlemann. He passed away on October 10, 2026, at the age of 71, following complications from a heart attack at The Queen’s Medical Center in Honolulu, Hawaii. Beyond his accomplishments in surfing and art, Larry was a beloved son, brother, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He is survived by his loving mother, five sisters, three children, eight grandchildren, and nine great-grandchildren. His legacy, both in and out of the water, will continue to live on through his family, the surfing community, and the many lives he touched.”
Phil Jarratt wrote a long profile on Larry Bertlemann for Surfer in 1979 with the fabulous title, “The Secret to Making the Cover, $80,000 a Year, and 360s: or Why Larry Bertlemann had to have his Phone Disconnected, and Other Startling Facts About Surfing’s Rubberman.”
“Modest is not the word that springs to mind in connection with Larry Mahau Bertlemann, 24. Unassuming doesn’t fit either. Bertlemann has – and he’ll be the first to admit it – an outrageously overblown ego. He also has an overblown, almost weird ability to set new standards in performance surfing. Erratic and often just plain ugly to watch, Bertlemann will occasionally explode into a manoeuvre that defies not only gravity but rational expectations as well. He is a truly gifted surfer who will stand out in the history of the sport as one of the originals, and yet he will never grace the record books. Too erratic, unpredictable and inconsistent to ever pose a contest threat, Bertlemann’s dynamic presence on the pro circuit nonetheless often generates more excitement than the event itself.”
Ol Larry was more than a professional surfer, it’s fair to say, and as Warshaw writes in the Encyclopedia of Surfing, Larry existed on a plane beyond most who draw a pay cheque from contest shredding. Him and his shaper Ben Aipa, RIP too, owned the performance space, Larry doin’ 360s and switchfoot turns on Aipa’s swallow twins and stinger designs.
“Larry is often cited as progenitor of today’s high-performance shortboard surfing. Nicknamed ‘Rubberman,’ the kinetic and hyper-flexible Bertlemann surfed in a low, springy, open-knee crouch. He worked his board constantly, but the motion was blended and synched, and he brought a smoothness to even the most explosive turns…
“In the late ’70s, borrowing a move from the skateboard world, Bertlemann began working on aerials—what he immodestly called “Larryials”—and became a forerunner to high-flying Kelly Slater and the rest of the early ’90s New School surfers…As crass as he was popular, Bertlemann at one point was “signing” autographs with a rubber stamp.”
Warshaw added, a little ominously, “Long associated with the Honolulu underworld, Bertlemann himself was arrested on robbery and firearm charges in the summer of 2001.”
That year, Larry was in a real bad way. Degenerated disc in his back, couldn’t surf, couldn’t walk, went in for an op and had aneurism so got his head opened up.
In that same issue, Larry said that surfing had started to get old, anyway.
“I got into marital arts so that I could enjoy surfing more. Surfing had gotten kind of stale. I got tired of people chasing me all over the world. I had to have my own little privacy time. I started getting into martial arts. Then I started getting into motorcycle racing, cars, jumping out of airplanes… I did everything.”
Larry’s legacy wasn’t just surf. He got the famous Dogtown Boys of Venice Beach all het up with his low, hand-planted, pivoting turns that borrowed from his own skating. Jay Adams, Tony Alva and the Zephyr crew took those surf turns back onto asphalt and pools, dragging a hand on the concrete and swinging the board around it, and the trick was named “the Bert” in his honour.

bro legit, rip…
in early 70’s, maybe ’73 I was invited to the Smirnoff pro am at sunset beach 18 amateurs from around the world were invited, dan flecky and I were the two Californians invited. the surf was fair to good. . one of my main memories was Bertlemanns heat. he had won it, but refused to come in afterwords . he kept surfing in the competitors area, and they kept announcing fo him to come in or he would be eliminated. the waves were so fun and uncrowded, he chose to just stay out and keep surfing.. the calls to come in got louder and louder, always using his name, not ‘red or’blue come in etc. he kept surfing. I thought it was very very kool he kept ignoring them. . oddly I dont remember the outcome, tho im pretty sure they didnt kick him out of the event,,,,
RIP Larry.
You were part of an awesome era of surfing……
This is the back cover of one of the more recent The Surfers Journal. RIP Larry.
Larry was the beginning of “ripping”. Sad when your heroes are biting the dust left and right. Especially when you’re Gen is next in line🙄.
Kook banter below should move to another post. Bertlemann deserves better.
You are right.
I’ll save it for later.
RIP to a legend.
Gents. Your old boy Sean had his first serious surf injury in 14 years yesterday. Just as the north pacific starts to light up for its winter festival. I landed on a fucken jagged ass rock goin for broke on end section. Had to drag my bleeding ass out of the water. Run to my car. Call the wife. Get the suit off. Drive myself to ER. $200 co pay and 3.5 hours later I walk out with 15 stitches. Out of the water for a bit.
That’s sucks.
Hope you heap up fast Homie.
Thanks brah.
Sorry to hear that!
15 stitches is rough. I hope you heal up well, Mr. Bond.
presumably you’re on the antibiotics with that one.
Just bourbon and beer brotha!
Ok ok, now I’m sure you know I’ve always considered you one of the (if not the most) naturally sophisticated and astute commenters in this virtual room of pretenders and/or uncouth rabble, so you can feel safe quietly telling me what really happened here (even if you weren’t so truthful to your good lady wife, for obvious reasons).
Were you really “going for broke on the dangerously shallow end section of a large and powerful top to bottom hollow wave” ?
Or were you hanging out with Chas in the carpark at his favourite spot Swa(r)mis, having a go on his new e-scooter, hit a small pebble, and stacked it into one of his pals e-bikes which was parked in the way ?
No shame either way, no shame…
Lol. Thanks Beef! To be honest. The only dangerous thing about that wave was me being on it. I’m an idiot. Super high tide. Rock submerged. Fell backwards. Fortunately mostly got my arm and not me head.
Guy pays me if he want tear me new asshole.
Ah fuck. If only BG had a bum expert
Change your username to Rim-matic and volunteer.
Legend no doubt. Doing a Bert on a skateboard ? Classic! He was a rail to rail top to bottom surfer . One of the best of his era no question .
What’s the reason for the comments change anyway

It appears that only individual comments can be blocked after being posted, not all comments from a particular commenter. Ha!
Ha!
No – it’s a filter. ALL comments can be BLOCKED.
